Had a really bad bout of depression and stomach problems on both previous statins. Put on Zetia. Gradually feeling more and more depressed, tired, and gas discomfort. I thought this was being caused by beta blockers but when I stopped them, the symptoms persisted. I'm also on Questran but when I was taking that alone, I had no adverse symptoms. That left Zetia as the culprit but my doctor refuses to recognize that it could be causing these things. In any case, I stopped taking it in September and in about 10-12 days my energy returned and I feel much sharper mentally. It was as if a curtain had been lifted. I did not make the decision to drop zetia until I read the comments on this site. | Zetia did produce marginal results for me when taken in conjunction with Questran and Niaspan. However, the side effects were too great. It may be useful for some. Everyone is different. I've had the same results with each one. I took Crestor for three months and the side effects started in the second month. I've been getting muscle pain and joint pain in my rotator cuff and left shoulder and muscle pain in my back. Now my other shoulder is starting to hurt. I was going to go to an orthopedic doctor, but I think it is the Zetia. I feel terrible and achey. I am stopping this lousey medication as of tomorrow, December 1, 2007. The statin drugs did the same thing--I tried three different brands. I started the Zetia and for the last month discovered severe toe pain and knee pain in both knees for a month. I read the comments today and saw that I share some of the common side effects. Then in 2006, Zetia was prescribed in combination with Fenofibrate 145 to improve my numbers further. However, in April 2008, my doctor reversed her decision about the combination because of concern that Zetia is not recommended to be taken with other drugs. However, she reversed herself again in October 2008 when my overall numbers increased over 200. Throughout the time I was taking Zetia I started taking massive cortizone injections in my knee to take care of what I thought was the onset of severe arthritis. Then my shoulders caved and I thought I had severe bursitis. Never did I suspect that Zetia might be at the root cause of these pains. By the time I was taken off Zetia in April, I had sever pain in neck, shoulders, knees, hips, and feet. Then, the miracle. Throughout the summer of 2008 I started feeling better, exercising more rigorously, and found myself pain free by autumn. Woohooo! | I remember just before my father died that I had intense arguments with his several specialists, none of whom could track what the other one was prescribing. They just aimed from the hip and fired at whatever symptom my father was presenting. Frankly, some of the symptoms were caused by reactions to other drugs. It was then, watching my father weaken every day until his eventual death that I determined to be the master of my own destiny. In the case of Zetia (and Zocor and other statins for that matter) I have all the information I need. They are not for me. Despite their marginal effect on reducing cholesterol, they have to be viewed in the context of one's own life...and if the quality of life is lacking, then the "clinical" yippee that we get out of lower cholesterol numbers has to be confronted. I have made up my mind. The pain and lack of life quality is not worth it. The depression had me near suicidal and the joints aching kept me from doing anything much.I had muscle aches too, I just haven't discovered which were from the medicine. Just daily chores became too much. I felt as old and I thought it was me until I stopped the pills. Two days and I was depression free and started to feel so much better physically. It was like taking 10 years or so off my age. I feel human again. | I would never recommend this drug and I am beginning to doubt that lowering cholesterol is a good idea or we would feel better on these drugs instead of worse than before. I had only been on Zetia for 3 days when the congestion started. It took 11 more days of suffering for me to figure out that it was the Zetia. I am having a horrible time remembering words I want to use when I am talking. I quit taking Zetia yesterday and the congestion in my head is starting to clear, but the cough has yet to subside. | I have tried Crestor and Zocor. Both caused horrible depression. I would rather risk heart attack or stroke than not be able to get out of bed in the morning. I would not recommend this drug or any of the other cholesterol lowering drugs. They are poison. I had managed to lower my LDL from 296 to 276 in 6 months without drugs. I'll keep doing what I'm doing naturally, watching what I eat and exercising.
