SEROQUEL  (QUETIAPINE FUMARATE):  This medication is used to treat certain mental/mood conditions (such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, sudden episodes of mania or depression associated with bipolar disorder). Quetiapine is known as an anti-psychotic drug (atypical type). It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain. This medication can decrease hallucinations and improve your concentration. It helps you to think more clearly and positively about yourself, feel less nervous, and take a more active part in everyday life. It may also improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level. Quetiapine can help prevent severe mood swings or decrease how often mood swings occur.   FDA Approval Date: 2005-10-04 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Bipolar disorder Increased appetite but not a problem when taken last thing at night. A little groggy in the morning but easily solved with a coffee and nowhere near as bad as insomnia-induced grogginess Absolute life changer, 200mg nightly allows me to sleep after decades of insomnia. 25 or 50mg taken as needed to mitigate depression, rage and/or mania on the fly works well. Clearly a lot of people have had problems with seroquel (quetiapine) but I can't recommend it highly enough. If your bipolar controls your life, as it did mine, quetiapine can give you your agency back. Speaking of which, you'll only gain weight if you allow it. M 47 10 years

3   Initial dizziness, dry mouth, cravings for sugary food which is why I nicknamed this drug "Sugarquel" rapid weight gain, sluggishness, et al. The medicine, along with Trazodone 150 mg tabs and Clonazepam (Klonopin) 0.5mg tabs initially would knock me out cold, but now they seem to take longer idk why. Otherwise its a good medication.  1  Bipolar OK short term, very bad long term. Experienced stiffness, complete lack of empathy and compassion, extreme exhaustion, total disinterest in everything, suicidal thinking, tardive dyskinesia, lack of emotion and a seething depression. Withdrawal from this drug is hell on earth!! Do not stop cold turkey! Even reducing slowly I have experienced terrible rebound insomnia, sickness, itching and irritability. F 53 10 years

1  anxiety/sleep 100 pound weight gain, tired all the time, oversleeping, overeating, overheating during exersising, easy sunburn, high cholesterol, abnormal liver tests. I was told by phychiatrists for 10 years that 100 mg serequel would never cause tardive dyscanetia and I should not worry about it. "Only happens to people who take high doses" Well, I'm walking around smacking my lips, puckering my lips like a fish and repetatively licking my lower lip. If that's not crappy enough, right about the time I started waking up grimmicing I found out I had sleep apnea. Had I know that and got on CPAP sooner I could have gotten off Serequel. Now I'm seriously thinking about killing myself. I'm not a severely mentally ill person who does nothing in society, just a hard working person like everybody else who was given serequel as a sleep aid and anti-anxiety agent and told it was safe. PSYCHIATRISTS LIE AND RUIN LIVES !!! Now i face living life in shame and humiliation or shooting myself in the mouth...Tough choice !! M 36 10 years

5  PTSD, lack of sleep Vivid dreams, groggy wake-up (use caffeine to overcome) no weight gain until I stopped smoking, slightly high blood sugar. Starting taking seroquel while on active duty and deployed in Iraq due to sleep problems and PTSD in 2009 at 25 mg, now retired from active duty and I take 200 mg before bedtime, If I don't take it, I will not go to sleep. Weight gain only after I stopped smoking in 2016, considering the small bad effects I rather take it than not. Recommend small dosage at first, plus be positive about life, it could be worse as I seen and experienced worse in Iraq. M 49 11 years

4  Bipolar and sleep issues Weight gain Seems the longer I've been on it, the less it helps me sleep. When I was on 25 mg the first 5 years, I slept great and didn't have any weight gain. I'm on 300-600mg at night now, and have put on 50 pounds. F 53 12 years

1  Depression and Anxiety Lethargy, apathy, fatigue, weight gain, I just didnt care much about anything. I couldnt. This drug along with other anti psychotics shouldnt be taken as a first option. Although it seemed to mask/dull the anxiety and depression, it made me a zombie. I wanted to sleep all of the time.. I gained 50+ lbs over the 12 years I was on seroquel. I was told that I could never get off of this stuff, but 16 months ago, I quit cold turkey. Weening off was not an option for me, as it made me feel more anxiety, and more 'crazy'. I went through 3 months of withdrawal from taking seroquel. I would never recommend that anyone take it..ever. I now have permanent damage done to me mentally..I have tremors and small 'tics' but it was worth getting off, for sure. I can FEEL again! F 44 12 years

5  Bipolar Disorder None. This has enabled me to stabilize my mood and prevent mania maybe 98% of the time. A higher dose would make me too tired. It does not cure mania. It just keeps it at bay. F 59 15 years

1  Insomnia, Schizotypal Personality D Increased appetite. Massive weight gain of 100+ pounds. Development of type 2 diabetes. Development of sleep apnea. Fatigue, lethargy & apathy. I have been on this medication for around 15 years now. I have tried going off it many, many times. I even slowly tapered it down to 6.5 mg, but always ended up back on it because without it - I wouldn't sleep at all for days, until I would usually start hallucinating and feeling like I was coming apart at the seams. Nothing else seems to work for my insomnia. I am fed up with constantly feeling tired all day and am sick of being so overweight. I went cold turkey 7 nights ago & have only managed 8 hours of sleep TOTAL since. I'm exhausted, but OK mentally, in part thanks to being on Prozac & in part to being so determined to get off of it for once and for all. While it guaranteed sleep for me, it simply wasn't worth the side effects. F 48 15 years

5  Misdiagnosed as Bipolar Gained 120 pounds. Cognitive impairment. I was initially put on 50mg due to the stress of losing a loved one. Quickly built up a tolerance and ended up on 900mg. Lost my career, ability to form relationships, or control my finances. I weaned off the drug over about 7 years. This is an inappropriate medication for long term use. It is disabling and clearly a neurotoxin. Avoid at all costs. I'm now working, going to school, and enjoying life again. M 55 17 years

3  OCD Weight gain right from the start of taking the Quetiapine. I never had a problem with weight before, but gained 40lbs in first year and always struggled since. Quetiapine, combined with an SSRI does help with OCD intrusive thoughts, but I am still very depressed. I am just existing, not living. I pushed myself for many years to overcome lack of motivation and apathy, but eventually it all got the better of me. Mental illness totally sucks. Side effects of meds are really bad, but often overlooked by “professionals” as they want us to shut up, take the pills and not bother them. I figured out that because Quetiapine increases prolactin to decrease dopamine in the brain, we are basically being zombiefied. Dopamine is good for motivation and feeling good. It's just tinkering with our brain chemistry to make us docile and compliant. F 46 17 years
