EVISTA  (RALOXIFENE HYDROCHLORIDE):  Raloxifene is used by women to prevent and treat bone loss (osteoporosis) after menopause. It slows down bone loss and helps to keep bones strong, making them less likely to break. Raloxifene may also lower the chance of getting a certain type of breast cancer (invasive breast cancer) after menopause. Raloxifene is not an estrogen hormone, but it acts like estrogen in some parts of the body, like your bones. In other parts of the body (uterus and breasts), raloxifene acts like an estrogen blocker. It does not relieve menopause symptoms such as hot flashes. Raloxifene belongs to a class of drugs known as selective estrogen receptor modulators-SERMs. This medication should not be used before menopause. It should not be used to prevent heart disease.   FDA Approval Date: 1997-12-09 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4   My bone scans are excellent, but it seems that Evista has been causing an ever-increasing soreness in my legs (just below the knees), plus a numb toe; and, during the past year or so, I developed tendinitis at both knees (ileo-tibial band). The diagnosis was complicted by the fact that I was also taking Zocor for 6 years (I began taking the two drugs at just about the same time, which made it very hard to diagnose the cause or causes); the Zocor caused increasingly terrible cramps throughout my body even though the blood tests showed no problems. In other words, owing to one or the other drug, Zocor and Evista, for about 5 years I had soreness below my knees for no diagnosable reason, plus spasms all over! Things got better for a few months immediately after I stopped the Zocor (about 5 years ago); but then the soreness just below my knees -- which didn't go away when I stopped the Zocor -- began increasing and got worse and worse, and eventually was complicated by the ileo-tibial infl The trouble caused by Zocor was terrible enough, but Evista was just as terrible, it seems, because it was doing things so silently and sneakily. Combined, the two medications have caused me to reduce my activity for almost 10 years, in hopes of avoiding pain and inflammation. A waste of 10 prime years!!! F 78 9 years

1  osteoporosis Hair loss. Leg cramps. Depression. Loss of energy. I definitely did not want to take the biphosphonates (Fosomax, Boniva), so I tried Evista for osteoporosis. Not a good option. Almost immediately I got mild leg cramps that lasted throughout the day and occasionally severe cramps when I woke up in the mornings. One cramp was so bad that my calf hurt for days. Then it became uncomfortable to squat while working in the garden. I had such low energy that I did not feel like doing much and I felt extremely depressed. My hair started falling out every time I brushed it and in huge amounts when I washed it. I got off Evista, switched to strontium citrate, calcium, vitamin d, and boron for my osteoporosis and I feel great! Unfortunately my hair stylist said that the hair loss would probably continue for a while after I got off the Evista and it has. But recently it seems to be normalizing--I'm not losing handfuls of hair after brushing or shampooing. F 57 3 months

1  Osteopenia Three days after first taking Evista I thought I was getting the flu and it turned into asthmatic bronchitis. I've not had asthma since I was a kid. I stopped taking the drug and then started again after the Dr said I really needed to take something. I am borderline Osteopenic. Same reaction. I quit the taking the drug. It amazes me that this drug was recommended to me by my doctor after I had problems the first time. He said it was a coincident and there's a lot of flu going around. I called E.Lilly and they said bronchitis was found in a percentage of people during the trial. F 61 3 days

1  Improve bone density JOINT PAIN - Unbelievable pain in most of my joints, I was afraid something terrible was going on in my body. This was never discussed as a side effect. Finally doing some research and trying to figure out when the pain had started I narrowed it down to Evista. Stopped the drug in Aug. 2010 and feel much better but still have pain in both shoulders and left hip. Hope it didn't do any permanent damage. It got so bad I was unable to raise my arms over my head. It's now Sept. 26, 2010 and I'm going to try some physical therapy to see if that helps with the joint pain and flexibility in my shoulders.  1  osteoporosis Flu like symptoms, sore throat, runny nose fever. I thought I had a cold not even thinking it was the med. Then the pain in my sternum and ribs started (just like with boniva and actonel) I also have bad pain and aches in my lower back and feet. Muscle cramps and memory loss. Geesh! I am only 50 yrs old and I feel 80! Osteoporosis is hereditary in my family. I have 2 sisters who took Boniva and Fosamax and had no prob. My mom was on fosamax for years. I can't take anything without having side effects. I am a nurse and that makes it even worse for me. I exercise and always have, I lift weights and take calcium and Vit D. I just upt my Vit d to 1000 per day and take caltrate and Vit C/mag and fish oil. I have had it with these hazardous meds. I had gone to an endocrinologist because of the osteoporosis after my second dexa scan and she is trying me on all this stuff. I have had enough. F 50 10 days

1  prevention of osteoporosis MAJOR PANIC ATTACK last night two hours after going to sleep. Later in the night, vivid nightmares. For the past week I've had "brain fog", can't concentrate, can't remember things; and had hot flashes. No way am I continuing this. My DEXA shows some slight osteopenia in my back and my hips are fine. That's improved over the years, with just lifestyle changes, weight loss (60 pounds!) and increased calcium. I have had panic attacks for the last year, but until this week they've been totally under control with Zoloft. But I've felt the anxiety symptoms creeping back all week, and last night's attacks and nightmares have left me utterly drained and feeling horrible. I don't *need* this medicine, and although the drug rep apparently sold it to my doctor as a miracle cure for everything :-P I'm done with it. Recommendation: DO NOT TAKE THIS DRUG. F 55 2 weeks

4  osteoporosis I did not have any significant side effects at first. I think I felt less mood swings. After some time I developed muscle cramps. As time went on the muscle cramps became worse. I would get cramps in my chest and stomach muscles. Like a "charley horse". I finally decided to stop taking Evista. I also was taking low dose HCTZ and stopped both meds and cramping stopped. Not keeping up with calcium (and possibly potassium) I believe worsens the cramping side effect. I often neglected to take the calcium as required. After the first year I had no bone density improvement on Evista. However after two and three years my bone density improved and I was no longer categorized as osteoporosis. I felt Evista was a better choice than Fosamax which I tried for about 5 weeks and stopped because of acute pain in joints most particularly my hands. F 62 4 years

3  osteopenia Took Evista for at least 6 years without any noticable side effects. My doc suggested I stop taking it because of the potential serious side effects. It has been a week or so since I stopped taking the drug. Now my body aches all over, especially knees. I'm wondering if this is a withdrawal symptom and, if so, will it go away. F 66 6 years
