EVISTA  (RALOXIFENE HYDROCHLORIDE):  Raloxifene is used by women to prevent and treat bone loss (osteoporosis) after menopause. It slows down bone loss and helps to keep bones strong, making them less likely to break. Raloxifene may also lower the chance of getting a certain type of breast cancer (invasive breast cancer) after menopause. Raloxifene is not an estrogen hormone, but it acts like estrogen in some parts of the body, like your bones. In other parts of the body (uterus and breasts), raloxifene acts like an estrogen blocker. It does not relieve menopause symptoms such as hot flashes. Raloxifene belongs to a class of drugs known as selective estrogen receptor modulators-SERMs. This medication should not be used before menopause. It should not be used to prevent heart disease.   FDA Approval Date: 1997-12-09 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  bone loss For 5 months now I have been having extreme lower back and right knee pain. I also have acid reflux. After reading the comments I am wondering if it is the Evista. I feel like I am 85 years old when I get out of bed, and am so sore to even turn over when I am sleeping. I have been slightly depressed and have not had as much energy as I had 2 years ago. Just thought maybe this is how 56 is suppose to feel. I am taking myself off Evista and hopefully the symptoms will go away. F 56 2 years

1  Osteoporosis Severe allergic reaction to Evista began approx. 12 hours after taking first pill. Spent 4 days in and out of doctor's office, emergency room, and overnight in hospital with red welt hives over every inch of my body, in my ears, esophagus, etc. Was treated with IV steroids, IV benedryl, and breathing treatments. Today, ten days after taking only the one pill, I am having nerve tingling sensations in my face, I am not sleeping well, and feel very "down." Of course, most people will not be allergic to Evista. I hope that you will never have the reaction that I have had. F 49 1 days

5  Osteoporosis I have not had any side effects so far. I was put on this medication for osteoporosis after being on Fosamax for 2 1/2 years and then no meds for a couple years and then Actonel for only 6 months when my osteopenia progressed to osteoporosis in both hips and spine - both of these biphosphonates terribly aggravated my GERD but only being 51 years old, I asked my endocrinologist if there were any other options left since I didn't want any of the complications associated with osteoporosis at such a relatively young age. She suggested Evista and also said it would have a secondary benefit of breast cancer risk reduction especially in estrogen positive cancers - which I am an almost 10 year survivor - that's how I ended up with osteo (chemo causing chemopause, then a hysterectomy, and then the Arimidex I took for 5 years); she said I'd probably have an easy time with Evista since I tolerated Arimidex well. Hoping I stay side effect free. F 51 23 days

2  family hx of osteoporosis Excrutiating muscle cramps both top and bottom simultaneously! Severe blurred vision-had MRI brain no problem-not diabetic-palpitations, increased Blood Pressure-no family or personal hx, Dizziness, muscle spasms and joint pain, frequent hot flashes and sweating-hysterectomy in 2001-benign-After reading this sight, I can only say that I am surprised-I attributed the symptoms to other things-I have had all of the symptoms mentioned by others on this sight-don't want to sound like a neurotic woman-However, with my strong family hx of breast/ovarian ca, I am stopping this medication immediately! My eye symptoms are so bad that my vision blurs suddenly while driving-dr. said it was dry eyes-the meds for that don't relieve symptoms. Hopefully all of my symptoms will wain upon discontinuing Evista. The results of this study linking Evista to Ovarian Cancer have been known for years, yet not revealed to the public. A black box warning for this medication must be placed or the drug needs to be removed from the market. I have been suffering with what I now know are side effects of Evista for years. The failure of the FDA to protect consumers and the non-disclosure of results by Lilly is unfathomable, and deliberatley negligent F 60 3 years

3  osteopenia/osteoporosis Awakening at night with excruciating muscle spasms running up and down both legs. I have to drink a liter of tonic water every day to prevent them. Once they start my only relief is sitting in a tub of hot water. Calling these episodes "cramps" is inadequate to the pain. I've read that quinine can be harmful and do not like drinking so much tonic water, but the muscle spasms are unbearable. I told my gynecologist about the spasms and she brushed it off that leg cramps were a side effect. I have had some improvement of bone density in some areas and no improvement in others. F 73 6 years

1  osteoporosis Diagnosed with Osteoporosis. Dr. recommended Boniva but I have GERD and thought it wasn't a good fit. Doctor then suggested Evista. Before I could start taking In October, I broke my ankle and due to the "blood clotting" factor, I was told not to take until after I had my cast off. In December I started taking Evista. Within 2 weeks I was having flashes (never had one before) and my left foot and toes were swollen and painful. I waited 2 weeks and went to doctor. I read the feedback from other Evista users and told the doctor. Absolutely refused to believe it was a side effect. Wanted to treat me for a Morton's Neuroma with an injection. I refused and said I would wait another week to see if pain lessened. When my ankle started swelling I went to my Orthopedic doctor who said he thought it might be a stress fracture in the foot and put me back in the boot cast for 3-4 weeks. I had to stop the Evista again due to the "clotting issue". Foot felt terrific when cast I threw the medicine away and have started numerous supplements and hope that works. I have an appointment with a specialist in 4 months to review my case and hopefully she can offer some better advice.FDA needs to review this product and doctors need to believe their patients.  3  osteopenia/breast cancer prevention hot flashes during the 1st 2 months, hair loss, feeling of not being just right, bug stinging in my legs during the night, not having energy nor desire to do stuff like I used to... I took myself off the drug(cold turkey) and was the best thing for me. I worried more about it rather that breast cancer. My latest bone density did improve slightly, so the drug along adding strength training classes at the gym/more vitamin D/more deligence with calcium. I'm taking my chances now and feeling more like my old self again....not for me. F 59 17 months

1  osteopenia During the brief time I took it, I felt extremely tired the same feeling I had when I took fosomax. My Dr. said claims it's not made with the same components as fosomax. I am going to give her a copy of this web site. I only wished that doctors were more aware of what they so-freely prescribe to their patients. You know that they wouldn't take it themselves.  2  Clustered Clacifications Diagnose Anger, Emotional, Poor Sleep, Hot & Cold Flashes, Sweating, Weight gain, Hip joint pains, lack of energy. With Evista I gained weight, no energy, blurred vision and had severe ANGER issues. So bad I was fired from my job. Severe Hot & cold flashes with heavy sweating. Sleepless nights waking up exhausted with no motivation or energy. Felt extremely emotional and sad all the time. Had pains on both my hip joints when touched. After 1 year with EVISTA I took myself off the med 10 days ago on 2/18/10 and am now feeling like I'm going through withdrawal. Can’t say I’m feeling better, as I feel my body pulsing, so I think its withdrawal. Can't sleep, frequent headaches and stomach issues. Contacting the Doctor Monday. F 59 1 years

1  Doctor Perscribed I researched Osteoporosis medicine, and am glad I did. I decided to go on my own and take womens vitamins, extra calcium; tums are great, oscal and caltrate are good as well. Herbal remedies are good, like horsetail tea, or capsules which are herbs, it is good for building bones, and other herbs as well. Fish oil is good, and vitamin D is great for absorbing calcium. Exercising is great, especially weight bearing exercises. F 56 0 times

1  Prescribed by Doctor I have been told by my doctor that I could change to Evista or Protos as I have had side effects from taking Actonal for the past 3-4 years. Upon reading comments here the side effects of Evista look just the same. Until I had reasearched both Actonal and Evista I had always thought I was being a hypocondriac complaining of leg cramps, head spins, hearburn, nausea, vomiting, panic attacks, high blood pressure. I had spent so much money going to physio, bowen therapy, leg doctors, as well as my GP, but I had never connected any of these symptoms to Actonal. I am now too scared to fill my script for Evista. When I told my GP my fears she said I has a simple choice - put up with maybe the side effects or dont take the tablets and breaking my hip or neck (I am in a very high risk catgeory) because of my low bone density. I feel another panic attack coming on!!!!! F 60

1  osteoperosis Two years ago I developed severe pain and numbness in my lower legs while exercising. I could go 17 minutes, exactly, on the treadmill and the pain would start. My doctor sent me to physical therapy for what they decided was Compartment Syndrome. Rest your muscles for 6 months to a year and you'll be ok! After a year I still would get the pain. Seven months ago I took myself off Evista and I am pain free now when I exercise.I feel better now than I have in years; the weight is coming off, hot flashes are gone and my hair is growing back in...all symptoms others have shared here. My advice is don't take it!!!!! F 61 5 years

1  Osteopenia Hot flashes, swollen fingers. Experienced hot flashes within hours of taking the first dose. The following day, I found my fingers were swollen to the point where my rings did not fit. I am a thin person and this has never happened to me before. After what I've experienced after only two doses and after reading about the other side effects, I'm discontinuing Evista and will continue on calcium, vitamin D and exercise to mitigate my osteopenia. Osteopenia is not fatal, but the blood clots and strokes Evista puts you at risk for are! F 53 2 days

5  osteoporosis None I went through menopause at 45. My mother has severe osteoporosis and I had osteopenia. My doctor decided to try evista for the hormone-like properties and the osteopenia. I have been on evista for eight years. My bone density has improved significantly and I have no side effects. I have had no menopausal symptoms either. My mother was on actonel for twenty five years. Her bone density continually worsened. After several fractures she is on the IV medication which has improved her bone density. I am staying on Evista F 54 8 years

1  osteopenia Headache, calf pain and leg muscle spasms. I have only taken this drug for 4 days. I began experiencing calf pain and muscle spasms. My lower back and some of my joints already ache. I will not take this anymore especially after reading these comments. Why don't doctors ever read these websites? Several years ago I took Fosomax and had many side effects and my doctor would not believe it came from this drug. Most of these side effects did not disappear for several years. I still have problems in the morning walking. My doctor was aware of the side effects I had from Fosomax so prescribed Evista. She did not believe I would get the same side effects. I'll work on getting my bone loss under control another way other than these drugs which doesn't improve my quality of life. F 57 4 days
