EVISTA  (RALOXIFENE HYDROCHLORIDE):  Raloxifene is used by women to prevent and treat bone loss (osteoporosis) after menopause. It slows down bone loss and helps to keep bones strong, making them less likely to break. Raloxifene may also lower the chance of getting a certain type of breast cancer (invasive breast cancer) after menopause. Raloxifene is not an estrogen hormone, but it acts like estrogen in some parts of the body, like your bones. In other parts of the body (uterus and breasts), raloxifene acts like an estrogen blocker. It does not relieve menopause symptoms such as hot flashes. Raloxifene belongs to a class of drugs known as selective estrogen receptor modulators-SERMs. This medication should not be used before menopause. It should not be used to prevent heart disease.   FDA Approval Date: 1997-12-09 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  DCIS Horrible joint pain, depression, hot flashes, headaches I took Evista for 14 days and was in tears. It made me so depressed. I also had terrible hot flashes. I spent hours in front of a fan to just try to cool down. I became very depressed and was not able to be the mom and wife I need to be. The joint pain was unbearable. My shoulders hurt so bad that I could not braid my daughter's hair. There were several nights that I couldn't make it up the stairs due to hip pain. My wrists and hands hurt so much that I could no longer sew. I have been off for 3 weeks now and still suffer from joint pain. I am hoping it will dissipate, but thought it would by now. The hot flashes are gone, as are the headaches. I would strongly advise all those that are considering taking Evista, consider the side effects. They are very real and cause one to feel much worse. It effects every day life. F 41 14 days

2  Osteoporosis I have been taking Evista since Aug 2011. I was loving Evista mostly because the lack of side effects I was experiencing. But honey moon is over: first my left toes and now both feet are numb all the time. If I sit or drive for 1/2 hour or more, my leggs become numb from my toes to my knees. Bad. F 53 13 months

1  Osteopenia Pain, debilitating, depressing unbearable pain. I took evista for 5 years without side effects. My Dr switched me to Fosimax and i had bad side effects so i went back to evista and the pain began. Joint, muscle and bone pain along with leg cramps and swelling. Really awlful. I've quit evista now i just want someone to tell me there is hope that the pain will subside. Its been two weeks and the night pain is terrible. Is there hope? F 64 3 months

5  oteoporosis No side effects whatsoever ! My bone density has increased! This is wonderful because I have been losing bone for the last 20 years and I cannot take estrogen because I have had breast cancer. One time I stopped Evista for a week because I was traveling and sitting still much of the time. I had an unusual melancholy/depression that almost ruined my vacation. Next trip, I plan to continue taking it. F 56 3 years

Stopped taking Evista...finally feel like myself. Haven't felt this good in two years- wish I had stopped taking it sooner. GERD is gone, headaches are gone and no more muscle cramps.  1  osteoporosis high fracture risk Hot flashes, severe leg, foot, toe cramps weight gain, headache, palpitations, increased muscle and joint pain, general feeling of being unwell Two years ago tried Fosamax then Actonel, quit for side effects of leg cramps and muscle pain. With no osteoporosis med my bone density has worsened.PCP prescribed Evista. Beginning 1/1/2012 I tried it for 10 days, and quit for the side effects named on the list.I have RA I inject Enbrel for, and have fibromyalgia so muscle and joint pain already exist. I have suffered for years with nightly leg cramps now that quinine is no longer available. I don't need to aggravate these issues with Evista. Since stopping Evista side effects lessened and I had returned to base line. I called PCP who said symptoms were due to my brain messing with me. He said try it again, then if the same thing happens he agrees I can't take it. He has insulted my intelligence after being my PCP 25 years, but I tried again for 4 days, symptoms returned. I have not called him yet, but plan to seek the advice of a naturopathic doctor who knows better than to insult me, and also knows something about alternatives to pharmaceuticals. I work full time in a medical care environment. Beware of health care professionals who stop listening to you. The symptoms are real, not your brain messing with you! F 66 14 days

1  osteoporosis nearly all of the terrible side effects described by other users. Horrible! I have been tapering off of Evista very slowly over years and now take it once every 6 days. At the end of five days I become anxiety ridden and this continues on the day I take it. The day after I take it I am depressed and the second day I become totally taken over by anxiety and depression. The four days after that I am better emotionally but have body aches, etc. PLEASE can someone tell me how they managed to get off of this drug. Did anyone use any hormone therapy. If so, did it help or make the situation worse. F 70 6 years

2  Osteoporosis I started having headaches after about 30days on Evista that would last all day long. I would put an ice pack on my eyes to get to sleep at night, and by morning the headache would be gone. Then I would take the Evista around 6-6:30am and by 9:30am my headache would be back. Also found my teeth were hurting like it was my sinuses, hands were swollen in the morning, had gained a few pounds, and I had no energy and was very grumpy and kinda foggy feeling! Well I did not take the Evista this morning and so far no headache and it is 10:45am. Teeth are still bothering me, still feel foggy and tired. Hopefully this too shall pass. I don't plan on returning to Evista-I can't take the headaches. I will research more on other ways to treat osteoporosis. F 53 2 months

5  osteoporosis I really don’t know how to get ahold of the Evista makers, maybe you can forward this to them, I believe in telling people when good things work, I started taking Evista 10 years ago because I had osteoporosis. I have taken it daily for 10 years. Well this year I had a scan done and my osteoporosis is GONE!!!! It has to be the Evista, and I am thrilled!!!!! Thank you for a medication that works so well. My Doctor said they were unsure about Evista, but I am living proof, and she will continue to keep me on it!!!. THANK YOU, Mary Mary Amyot 8177 Trolleys End Cicero, New York 13039 WONDERFUL!!!!!  1  Osteoporosis I tried. I started Evista on a vacation so I could really monitor the effects. I found my digestive system stopped working (constipated) even though I was using bran, drinking lots of water and exercising right after. I want long-term but it's uncomfortable and it appears to get worse with use. So I'm going to stop it, and discuss it with my doctor mid-January. I am of the belief there isn't much available that counteracts osteoporosis. Sites like this are important. Doctors don't offer this kind of information. F 56 27 days

1  Oteopenia Severe brain fog. I can't concentrate or remember things. Frequent headaches, digestive upset, fatigue and daily hot flashes. I have extreme difficulty keeping up at work. Things that were easy are now difficult. My short term memory is poor. This all started in the last two months. I have been taking Evista for about 3 months. It didn't immediately occur to me that Evista could be the cause as the problems didn't start until a month after starting Evista. After reading the reviews I am stopping the drug immediately. I have other side effects, but the cognitive problems are the most devastating. F 54 3 months

3  Prevention of Breast Cancer swelling of legs and feet; weight gain; high triglycerides and enzymes; hair loss/thinning; dry skin; muscle aches I had DCIS in 2007, was told to take Evista after surgery for 5 years. Had been on hormone therapy and family history of BC. This past year, developed swelling of legs and feet, weight gain; high triglycerides & enzymes; major hair loss and thinning. After a visit to my internist after a blood test showed my liver enzymes were too high, read more on Evista and decided to stop taking it. Will contact my BC doctor and advise I am not taking. Cannot take tamoxifen due to fibrous tumor in my uterus. F 64 4 years

3  DEXA scan showed bone loss Had gastric bypass. Two years later had parathyroids removed and started taking Synthroid. Also had Dexa Scan which showed bone loss compared to previous year. At this time my FSH levels showed that I was menopausal. Started taking Evista. Hot flashes stopped after a few months. The third year's scan was almost back to normal. Started having problems about year 5. Started with leg cramps and foot cramps across the top of my feet, sometimes during the night, other times several times during the day. This last year has been the worst. I have muscle cramps after setting for any length of time and my legs feel "bow-legged" with the calves burning and pain in the ankles. I can't stand for any length of time and any exercise I try to do (such as leg lifts or gentle walking) result in additional pain for over a week. I have been experiencing edema in my ankles and knees and complained to my doctor who stated to stay away from salt. I asked about the Evista and he stated that the symptoms would have appeared within the first 2 years of taking this Rx, not 6 years later! I think that the symptoms I am experiencing have been slowly ongoing and I just found excuses for their causes until now that they are painful beyond reason. I have stopped taking Evista for the last three days and today I was able to stay on my feet much of the day. My ankles are slightly swollen but not the "tree-trunks" they have been at the end of the day. There have been a few mornings that I have had swollen ankles before getting out of bed, which is unusual. I will talk to my doctor about just taking the vitamin/mineral regime and to test for any change in the DEXA scan. F 60 7 years
