EVISTA  (RALOXIFENE HYDROCHLORIDE):  Raloxifene is used by women to prevent and treat bone loss (osteoporosis) after menopause. It slows down bone loss and helps to keep bones strong, making them less likely to break. Raloxifene may also lower the chance of getting a certain type of breast cancer (invasive breast cancer) after menopause. Raloxifene is not an estrogen hormone, but it acts like estrogen in some parts of the body, like your bones. In other parts of the body (uterus and breasts), raloxifene acts like an estrogen blocker. It does not relieve menopause symptoms such as hot flashes. Raloxifene belongs to a class of drugs known as selective estrogen receptor modulators-SERMs. This medication should not be used before menopause. It should not be used to prevent heart disease.   FDA Approval Date: 1997-12-09 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Osteopenia Took Evista for 2 years. It caused 2 large blood clots in my leg. Now I'll be on the blood thinning drug Cumaden for the rest of my life and need to get blood tested regularly. This is a risky drug. F 70

2  Bone loss, Osteopenia Dizzy at times. Fainting spells twice with a light shaking of my body like a seizure. I did not completely pass out but almost. Diarrhea for the past 3 months, abdominal pain and bloating and gas. Very uncomfortable. Once it dawned on me that the 3 months of diarrhea are probably not due to a GI Virus I had in mid October after all, I decided to stop the Evista tonight and will see if the symptoms all subside. It is a Catch 22 when you have thinning bones. But I can't continue to take it with these nasty GI side effects. F 62 6 months

2  osteoporosis, precancerous cervix Started Evista to help with Osteoporosis and keep some precancer situation from progressing in cervix and to keep from getting breast cancer.Almost 1month now and have experienced a nerve like pain in my shoulder - my bra strap is constantly hurting me, this same pain seems to travel to other areas at times. The other problem is my memory has gotten really bad at times - went to take a sailing exam and I knew the material before the test day, however when it came time to take the test I couldn't remember how to figure out the navigation questions - my mind was a total blank and I couldn't figure why. I have scattered days when I keep making simple mistakes and can't remember things. My vision is becoming fuzzy more and more when trying to focus and read - I drive for a living and this is not good. When I first started had very bad cramps in my legs - that seems to have subsided. Some days constipated and others diarrhea - never had that problem before. I also noticed my hands turned completely white - my skin tone was usually pink. I started to research this drug and read that some people started taking aspirin daily to counteract blood clots - so I am doing this also.Constantly bloated even though I am not eating much and drink lots of water. Sweating everyday all day long. The other morning after a good rest had a hard time getting out of bed and when I looked into the mirror my face seemed red, blotchy and very puffy.I searched for a site like this to see what other people are F 59 1 weeks

1  osteoporosis Incredible pain and discomfort in upper GI tract, esophagus. I never had this problem. Reading this site's side effects, I am stopping the Evista today. I'll call my MD re: alternatives. This is terrible! Also, bone pain in toes, fingers, and right hip . Thought I'd injured hip with exercise, but now I doubt that. Also, feeling bloated and have gained 3 pounds in 25 days, with more exercise than I'd been getting prior to starting the Evista. Will stick to bland foods until this pain subsides in my esophagus. My very first medication prescribed on a regular basis, and I'm stopping it NOW! I seriously feel like it will burn a hole through my stomach if I keep taking it. F 61 25 days

3   stabbing shoulder pain and cramping coincided with use of Envista; I can't say for sure they are related but there is NOTHING (not even painful, deep tissue massage) that alleviates the tightness and pain in my shoulders and neck. I have never experienced anything like this before. The night sweats and leg cramps are minor and tolerable compared to the shoulder business. Optimistic about slowing down bone loss (runs in family and hysterectomy 4 years ago probably did not help). I have plenty of history with my doctor and I know I can trust her selection but if this is a side effect, and it does not abate, I will ask for an alternative. F 55

2  bone loss I am starting to wonder if my bad knee joint pain is related to this drug, after reading other comments. Drs. say "arthritis" but i never had arthritis pain before, and just have a gut feeling this pain is not just from arthritis. I am going to stop Evista and see if it improves......... will update later. F 60 4 years

1  osteoporosis runs in my family Didn't make the connection until I reached this site. Since starting Evista have had BAD leg cramps, problems with acid reflux, hair loss, problems swallowing food, and then WORSE.... trouble getting up from chairs and hardly able to go up or down stairs. MORE WORSE: numbness and stiffness in fingers to the point I can hardly write my name, hard to tie shoes or pick up dropped items. Having trouble peeling and cutting food, have taken two bad falls due to vertigo. Stopped taking Evista when I was planning to go on an extended car trip that involved sitting a lot. The side effects said that was bad. After reading these reports I will NOT go back on it. Ever. Dr. told me to take Boniva, but the side effects of THAT seem even worse! Will have to take my chances as I will NOT take any of these, again. How can 'doctors' prescribe these drugs without looking into the side effects more seriously? I feel ALL these complications in my life, are the result of taking this drug! F 79 4 years

2  osteopenia It was prescribed to take daily but I chose to take every other day instead; for past year I have in fact taken daily; I have very recently begun to experience the flwg: night sweats, ankles swelling, acid reflux and hair loss, none of which occurred before; have begun tapering off and will cease taking totally. I believe there are too many negatives surrounding Evista. F 68 24 months

1  Osteoporosis High blood pressure, joint pain, thigh pain, migraine My normal blood pressure is like a teenager's. While taking Evista, it elevated to point where my endocrinologist wanted to put be on BP medication. Instead, I stopped Evista, and my blood pressure returned to normal. Since I have only seen one comment about high blood pressure as a side effect, which I just saw, I decided I'd better post my experience for others. F 67 9 months

2  Osteopenia Weight Gain I have been taking Evista and also a calcium w/vit D suppliment. I have noticed that I have been gaining weight and just can't seem to lose it. Four months ago I was walking my dog and bent down to separate another dog from going after mine. I didn't fall I just twisted my ankle. Five days later I went to Urgent care and they told me that I broke the Fibular in the ankle. My question is why am I taking something that seems to make me gain weight and didn't really stop me from breaking a bone. Because of my weight my cholestrol has gone up, so I have to take Simvastian to get that down. I've talked to the doctor but he doesn't seem to agree with me. Eight years ago I broke my upper arm and that took close to two years to heal and I was on a different med than Evista. F 68 5 years

1  to prevent breast cancer, osteopero Leg pain, hip pain, visual disturbances, headaches, numbness, knee pain, restless legs, leg cramps My doctor prescribed this medication for me about 2003. Two years ago, I experienced what was called a "vascular event". Prior, I walked 3 miles everyday and was considered very healthy. I went numb from my waist down, can't to this day feel my feet, legs feel numb as well as my right arm. My doctor who prescribed it called right away and told me to get off of the Evista. My energy level is still very low. About two years before the "event" which they said was a spinal cord stroke, I started having symptoms which I attributed to my job as I'm on my feet all day. I was never asked about symptoms and when I said something it was ignored. My ankles started swelling. Now, I have retired. I still can't feel my feet and have horrible hip pain that is sometimes nauseating. I doubt at this point that the numbness will ever go away in my legs and torso. I am begging anyone who has taken this medication or is taking it to get off of it as soon as possible. F 64 8 years
