Valtrex takes it down to about a week. If I take it when I start to feel the tingling in my lower lip, I can usually prevent the sore all together. Only downside is that it takes two days of miserable side effects to get through it. Had one so bad one night I had to call off of work the next day and couldn't even get off the couch. Stopped taking the drug the next day but felt like I was losing my mind for several weeks after. Even took myself to the ER to try to get something for the anxiety because every day was a non stop struggle to function normally. Thank god I found this website and found some validation in how I was feeling because I genuinely felt like I was going insane. I'm now 3 weeks completely off the drug and I'm starting to return to my normal self. To anyone experiencing these symptoms I recommend immediately stop taking it. It will get better but it may take a little time so don't be alarmed if your symptoms persist for a while after you stop. | I can't believe patients aren't warned about these possible side effects before being prescribed the drug. I got my first cold sore just before my 34th birth day. I was so careful to not get near anyone who had one. I didn't date girls who I knew got them. I don't think I looked down on anyone for getting them I just didn't want them. Karma got me. Could literally be anything on my lip maybe even I bit my lip or slight accident with a fork like eating or something. I can find a way to live my life again becuse of this drug. Doctor thought it was highly suspicious for HSV-1, but could also be shingles, or impetigo. Dr. would not swab sores so that we could be sure. Started Valtrex and Bactroban, and things got worse before they better, but no new blisters appeared, and a week later my face is 99% healed up. As far as I am concerned this is a miracle drug, and I only wish I had started it earlier, as I still have neurological pain, and it looks like most of the healing blisters across my face will scar. I've been doing a lot of research on herpes, and herpes itself has CNS effects that can explain some of the neurological effects that I experienced, such as restlessness and anxiety.
