1 | Remicade joint pain side effect | extreme anxiety, extreme depression, heart palpitations, suicide idealisation | almost committed suicide from it, be aware, if you have anxiety or depression from sulfasalazine stop it. | M | 34 | 8 days 1000 mg 3X day | 6/23/2023 | 1 | Rheumatoid arthritis and UC | Heart palpitations, extreme anxiety, low energy levels, hands shaking, intrusive thoughts, paranoia, headaches. | I thought I was going crazy. I thought possibly I was experiencing psychosis and needed to be admitted to hospital. I have stopped taking these pills for 48hrs and already feeling more calm. I was waking every morning with a racing heart, feeling like I had to worry about basics tasks. I had paranoia about everything and fear. I did notice an improvement with my arthritis in my knees, but some days I have experienced extreme pain also. I'm 99% sure this medication was the cause of my extreme anxiety and making me feel like I was losing my mind. I'm going to speak to my drs as I already feel an improvement after stopping for only 2 days. I'm also on Remicade for my UC I think I'll just see how this goes without the extra medication for the RA | F | 34 | 3 months 500mg 4X day | 5/31/2023 | 1 | Severe rheumatoid arthritis | Severe aches and major wrist swelling and pain not good suicidal thoughts | M | 57 | 7 days 500 3X day | 5/10/2023 | 2 | R.A | I have various other problems besides R.A. However the prime concern was barrets esophagus which flared up uncontrollably when taking these. My throat became very sore, swollen glands, very tired. | After reporting these symptoms to DR was told to keep taking them. I cannot swallow anything so cannot. Will pause / stop now. | M | 67 | 3 weeks 500 3X day | 3/15/2023 | 2 | Psoriatic arthritis | I am so thirsty since my dose went up to 4 pills. I am being studied for this. I have saliva but there is a extreme thirsty sensation that won't go away no matter how much water I drink. I also have more mouth ulcers than before. | My artritis symptoms have reduced a bit bit I still have inflammation and pain. | F | 21 | 6 months 500mg 4X day | 2/4/2023 | 2 | RA | Heart palpitations, stress, anxiety, panic attacks, stomach jitters Neck stiffness. I have occipital neuralgia so it flared up also (from the anxiety) My joints hurt more. I stopped taking it. | Not for me I guess. | F | 54 | 6 weeks 2000mg (4) 2X day | 11/20/2022 | 2 | UC and reactive arthritis | I was only on sulfasalazine for about a week but it immediately gave me super severe fatigue and increased joint pain/inflammation. It also started giving me pretty severe neck stiffness. I also have many many issues with psychiatric issues such as severe anxiety and depression (which aren't being treated properly right now either). I think the sulfasalazine may have also increased my anxiety/depression but it's a little hard to tell with all my medication changes and all of my other health issues flaring up as well. | F | 23 | 1 weeks 500mg 2X day | 2/17/2022 | 1 | crohns and seronegative ra | Pruritis, eyelid lip and hand swelling, extreme anxiety, anxiety attacks | I took one pill at night with intention to slowly increase to the standard dose. The itching was immediate and I woke up extremely swollen every morning. I had 3 out of the blue anxiety attacks. The first was on day 4, then day 5 and on day 8. I called my rheum and he had me stop the medication, take benadryl, and added it to my allergy list. | F | 36 | 8 days 1X day | 1/5/2022 | 4 | Ostheoarthritis | No side effects | My only concern is that it reduces the immune system. | F | 73 | 3 months 2X day | 10/13/2021 | 2 | Inflammatory Arthritis (sero-neg) | Started feeling a bit tired and weak after building up to 1.5g after 2 weeks. On the 5th\6th week I was so out of it I couldn't function, quick to anger, terrible memory, drastic decline in cognitive abilities, couldn't think, weakness in body, suicidal, hopelessness, insomnia, loss of appetite, manic, mood swings, vision problems. Generally very confused and distressed most of the time, not lucid at all, awful headaches, fogginess, sore teeth. | 2 weeks after coming off sulfasalazine im getting dizzy spells and periods of not being very lucid, though its much, much less. Insomnia is still going strong, appetite is back, mood is regular, no suicidal thoughts. A little bit of joint pain returned and mouth ulcers. | F | 22 | 6 weeks 1.5g 1X day | 10/7/2021 | 1 | Crohn's disease | Anxiety. Itchy skin. Difficulty sleeping. | I had been suffering from anxiety and delayed sleep onset / fragmented sleep since my teens. Sertraline finally helped me attain normalcy and I'd been feeling fine for almost two years. Diagnosed with Crohn's via colonoscopy a few months ago, and put on sulfasalazine 500mg x2 twice daily. Almost immediately experienced sleep disturbances, anxiety, and nocturnal pruritis (itchiness) exactly as I used to. I figure it's interacting with my sertraline or inhibiting it somehow because it's literally the only new thing I've introduced to my regimen. I would rather have inconsistent and occasionally bloody stools than suffer from anxiety ever again, so I'm stopping the sulfasalazine. | M | 31 | 1 weeks 1000mg 2X day | 10/5/2021 | 1 | Dactylitis | Extreme fatigue, stomach upset, & nausea at increasing to full dose around the 4-5 week mark. Not getting enough sleep. Reduced it back to half to try and slowly increase it again. I've been trying to increase it but at higher doses it's becoming unbearable. There is no change from my dactylitis and Ankylosing Spondylitis. In fact, my inflammation seems to have just worsened and spread in my foot, and I have little energy. This experience has been severely interfering with work life balance. I have been severely depressed, suicidal, and withdrawn from all activities and people that normally bring me joy. | May work well for others, but it hasn't done anything good for me. I'm weaning off it now, giving myself a break to see if my symptoms improve before trialling anything new. Be careful about other possible drug interactions. | F | 2 months 500mg 2X day | 10/3/2021 | 3 | I am taking it for my RA; | I was getting some headaches and stomach issues that were very bad at first, but hopefully, they will taper off as I get acclimated to the medication | They do help with my RA; I'm able to get up from my chair and moving around more without too much pain | M | 64 | 1 months 250 mg 2X day | 9/21/2021 | 3 | I am taking it for my RA; | I was getting some headaches and stomach issues that were very bad at first, but hopefully, they will taper off as I get acclimated to the medication | They do help with my RA; I'm able to get up from my chair and moving around more without too much pain | M | 64 | 1 months 250 mg 2X day | 9/21/2021 | 3 | My rheumatologist prescribed it! | When I first started taking it; I began to get headaches for a couple of days, but I'm able to move more and it does help lessen my joint pain; but I've been getting a upset stomach that was painful at first but then goes away, so I kind of expected side effects with a new medication that will eventually go away after some time on sulfasazine | Well, since I started this medication, I realized there will be side effects, but that happens with any medication you begin taking; but they eventually will go away with time; so, since I just started it, that's what I have to deal with! | M | 64 | 6 days 1/2 tablet 2X day | 9/6/2021 | 2 | Inflammation Arthritis | Dry eyes ,legs hurt muscle cramps insomnia Belly pain fatigue tired all the time | Taking it with yogurt not sure if this is working | F | 72 | 0 weeks 1000mg 2x 2X day | 9/5/2021 | 3 | psoriatic arthritis | on one hand, it helped the pain so much. i used to not even be able to check my blind spots while driving. this was a huge relief, but i'm not sure it's worth it for the side effects. they were strange but pretty severe - my skin was so beautiful before and i've had *awful* cystic acne ever since i started taking this, plus i've been getting these really intense muscle cramps - like, the kind you can see moving beneath the skin. they hit out of nowhere and sometimes knock me to the ground, it'll be in my legs or feet and i can't move for at least a minute or two until it stops. reading the other reviews, i'm wondering if maybe this medication is the reason i haven't been feeling like myself lately. | F | 21 | 2 months 4X day | 8/1/2021 | 3 | Psa | Nausea and heart burn for 3 months. Moderate improvement in joints. After 6 months had less effect on joints but improved gut health. | F | 9 years 1500mg 2X day | 6/18/2021 | 1 | RA UC | Nausea, fever, strong headaches. Miscle stiffness, heart palpitations, mood changes. Intestinal pain, induce bad flare up pf pain and fatigue | F | 38 | 14 days 2000 2X day | 5/17/2021 | 1 | RA | Extreme anxiety | Had extreme anxiety since the first week. Cant even walk outside anymore and used to love being outside. Cant even go to work, been home sick for the last week. I need to stop taking this if the anxiety doesn't stop. | F | 30 | 14 days 3 tabs x D 2X day | 3/6/2021 |
SULFASALAZINE (SULFASALAZINE): Sulfasalazine is used to treat a certain type of bowel disease called ulcerative colitis. This medication does not cure this condition, but it helps decrease symptoms such as fever, stomach pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. After an attack is treated, sulfasalazine is also used to increase the amount of time between attacks. This medication works by reducing irritation and swelling in the large intestines. In addition, delayed-release tablets of sulfasalazine are used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Sulfasalazine helps to reduce joint pain, swelling, and stiffness. Early treatment of rheumatoid arthritis with sulfasalazine helps to reduce/prevent further joint damage so you can do more of your normal daily activities. This medication is used with other drugs, rest, and physical therapy in patients who have not responded to other medications (salicylates, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs-NSAIDs).
