2  Inflammatory Arthritis (sero-neg) Started feeling a bit tired and weak after building up to 1.5g after 2 weeks. On the 5th\6th week I was so out of it I couldn't function, quick to anger, terrible memory, drastic decline in cognitive abilities, couldn't think, weakness in body, suicidal, hopelessness, insomnia, loss of appetite, manic, mood swings, vision problems. Generally very confused and distressed most of the time, not lucid at all, awful headaches, fogginess, sore teeth. 2 weeks after coming off sulfasalazine im getting dizzy spells and periods of not being very lucid, though its much, much less. Insomnia is still going strong, appetite is back, mood is regular, no suicidal thoughts. A little bit of joint pain returned and mouth ulcers. F 22 6 weeks

1  Crohn's disease Anxiety. Itchy skin. Difficulty sleeping. I had been suffering from anxiety and delayed sleep onset / fragmented sleep since my teens. Sertraline finally helped me attain normalcy and I'd been feeling fine for almost two years. Diagnosed with Crohn's via colonoscopy a few months ago, and put on sulfasalazine 500mg x2 twice daily. Almost immediately experienced sleep disturbances, anxiety, and nocturnal pruritis (itchiness) exactly as I used to. I figure it's interacting with my sertraline or inhibiting it somehow because it's literally the only new thing I've introduced to my regimen. I would rather have inconsistent and occasionally bloody stools than suffer from anxiety ever again, so I'm stopping the sulfasalazine. M 31 1 weeks

1  Dactylitis Extreme fatigue, stomach upset, & nausea at increasing to full dose around the 4-5 week mark. Not getting enough sleep. Reduced it back to half to try and slowly increase it again. I've been trying to increase it but at higher doses it's becoming unbearable. There is no change from my dactylitis and Ankylosing Spondylitis. In fact, my inflammation seems to have just worsened and spread in my foot, and I have little energy. This experience has been severely interfering with work life balance. I have been severely depressed, suicidal, and withdrawn from all activities and people that normally bring me joy. May work well for others, but it hasn't done anything good for me. I'm weaning off it now, giving myself a break to see if my symptoms improve before trialling anything new. Be careful about other possible drug interactions. F 2 months

3  My rheumatologist prescribed it! When I first started taking it; I began to get headaches for a couple of days, but I'm able to move more and it does help lessen my joint pain; but I've been getting a upset stomach that was painful at first but then goes away, so I kind of expected side effects with a new medication that will eventually go away after some time on sulfasazine Well, since I started this medication, I realized there will be side effects, but that happens with any medication you begin taking; but they eventually will go away with time; so, since I just started it, that's what I have to deal with!  3  psoriatic arthritis on one hand, it helped the pain so much. i used to not even be able to check my blind spots while driving. this was a huge relief, but i'm not sure it's worth it for the side effects. they were strange but pretty severe - my skin was so beautiful before and i've had *awful* cystic acne ever since i started taking this, plus i've been getting these really intense muscle cramps - like, the kind you can see moving beneath the skin. they hit out of nowhere and sometimes knock me to the ground, it'll be in my legs or feet and i can't move for at least a minute or two until it stops. reading the other reviews, i'm wondering if maybe this medication is the reason i haven't been feeling like myself lately.  1  Crohn's arthritis I have terrible nausea and headache I feel anxious and agitated and my stomach hurts. I don't feel any benefit and i have to increase by 3 times. I feel fatigued and really down. There us no benefit to my symptoms probably too soon for that. I really can't tolerate the side effects. I would not recommend this medication. I need to contact gp and rheumatologist. This feels toxic. Very toxic even the smell and taste. I want to stop this and would not recommend. What is in this? F 53 7 days

3  Possible Psoriatic Arthritis Started 1 tab twice a day to 2 tabs am and pm. Really worked well for the joint pain, brought the inflammation down too. Heartburn, mouth feels dry and swollen around the lips. Teeth feel dirty all the time, and super dry mouth. Urine smell was pretty bad. Had to take the tabs with food to help with nausea. Careful taking with carbs/milk and any acid food. Was living on tums and mylanta. Mouth and lips feel odd. Very dry mouth. Fingers have been developing dry peeling patches. Not sure if it is because of the meds. I decreased the tabs to 1 am and 1 pm, and 2 month later thinking of going to 1 pill at night. Unfortunate side effects because the pills really worked well for the pain and swelling in my joints. The newer medicines could be bad for my liver. One day at a time I guess! F 62 3 months

5  Inflammatory arthritis Upset stomach at first, but gradually increased dosage so now I'm pain free most days. I do stay thirsty with dry moth and lips. I do think it has increased my blood pressure in the last 3 months. I'm wondering how long I have to stay on it . It really gave me my life back. F 59 18 months

2  Inflammatory arthritis So I had quit taking alcohol because I wanted better help.. but shortly afterwards my joints started hurting... I went to arthritis doc and my blood work came back negative but he prescribed me this drug. I stopped drinking and feeling joint pain end of January. I felt it really wasn't helping much but I had the side effects that a lot of others had... but I continued to take. My doc wanted to up the dosage because I was taking less than normal 2 a day and he said normally it's 4-6 pills a day. I told him I'll stay at 2. Well I started all this in may. Come September I missed a dosage but my joints were feeling better. So I stuck with 1 pill. Several weeks go by and I'm still good. I emailed my doc and asked if I needed to wean off and he said no you can quit whenever no need to wean. So I did... ever since I've quit I feel okay but disassociated with life. Almost how I felt the first two weeks after starting this. I've gone to the docs for annual and blood work is all fine. My blood press is back to normal, I did get a UTI but my anxiety is high and I feel like my head is in the clouds, and dry (I've been drinking lots of water and vitamins etc). I'm hoping illl eventually come out of this. It's been about 2 weeks now since I've quit these and ever since this is how I've been feeling. Little dizzy too but not too bad. F 38 5 months

SULFASALAZINE  (SULFASALAZINE):  Sulfasalazine is used to treat a certain type of bowel disease called ulcerative colitis. This medication does not cure this condition, but it helps decrease symptoms such as fever, stomach pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. After an attack is treated, sulfasalazine is also used to increase the amount of time between attacks. This medication works by reducing irritation and swelling in the large intestines. In addition, delayed-release tablets of sulfasalazine are used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Sulfasalazine helps to reduce joint pain, swelling, and stiffness. Early treatment of rheumatoid arthritis with sulfasalazine helps to reduce/prevent further joint damage so you can do more of your normal daily activities. This medication is used with other drugs, rest, and physical therapy in patients who have not responded to other medications (salicylates, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs-NSAIDs).   (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)
