SULFASALAZINE  (SULFASALAZINE):  Sulfasalazine is used to treat a certain type of bowel disease called ulcerative colitis. This medication does not cure this condition, but it helps decrease symptoms such as fever, stomach pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. After an attack is treated, sulfasalazine is also used to increase the amount of time between attacks. This medication works by reducing irritation and swelling in the large intestines. In addition, delayed-release tablets of sulfasalazine are used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Sulfasalazine helps to reduce joint pain, swelling, and stiffness. Early treatment of rheumatoid arthritis with sulfasalazine helps to reduce/prevent further joint damage so you can do more of your normal daily activities. This medication is used with other drugs, rest, and physical therapy in patients who have not responded to other medications (salicylates, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs-NSAIDs).    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  UC and RA No side effects An affordable base control drug that is very effective for me and I only occasionally need Prednisone or Methotrexate to supplement the relief of symptoms. Any reduction in dosage very quickly results in dramatically increased inflammatory symptoms and pain. I'm now 70yrs and I've began using SSz when I was 19 so I'm incredibly lucky that the drug has been so effective for so long. F 70 50 years

4  RA Some nausea with pills that did not have gastro protection ("extra coating"). Once I switched to the gastroprotection variety, no nausea, but looser stools than normal. Seem to work for me, but my RA not very severe. Was on MTX before, never again, caused me endless cough. F 67 3 months

1  Rheumatoid Arthritis Suicidal thoughts, depression crying non stop. I honestly thought it was just the RA making me feel so crap but when i crashed my car last weekend and ended up going a week without while i was away from home getting my car fixed my mood returned to normal and the difference was obvious! This drug nearly killed me. So thankful that this happened so I would know that it was just a side effect! Will never take this drug again. It made me wish i was dead! F 47 4 weeks

1  ulcerative colitis Dosage window update: that's 2000mg twice a day. Omg I hate what this medication did to me. The rash started almost right away. The following week I started getting a fever. The next week after that my skin ached so bad, I dreaded moving to do anything. Definitely not going back to using it. F 31 1 months

Patient History
1  psoriatic arthritis INCREASED joint pain, headaches, nightmares/ hallucinations, wild mood swings: after 2 weeks SEVERE DEPRESSION started - stopped medication, called my doctor to report depression, specified suicidal thoughts. TWO Days Later she called back and suggested an antidepressant, told me to continue the medication and that the medication could not be the cause. I argued that I did not have clinical depression and the medicine was not the right choice for me. She told me she knew what was best and reminded me she had 17+ years as a Rheumatologist... I started back, 3 days later - ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. My Fiance is my HERO, he stopped me from eating my .45. He just happened to come home 2 hours early... THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. DOCTORS DON'T LISTEN!!! I absolutely believe this med was the cause. I am normally very jovial and optimistic. I have never been so terrified, I was seeing "things" out of the corner of my eye, hearing things... ugh! And the night terrors! Screaming at night?? REALLY?? I got another rheumy, turns out I don't even have psoriatic arthritis!!! It's a Srynx (C5-7, 11mm), small Chari Malformation (4mm), slipped/bulging disk (L5-S1), and severe bursitis in the hips. Still have to follow up on the suspected tumors in my enlarged uterus... It actually took me so many Dr's and tests, my ordeal is not over yet... Lesson Learned! If something is not right and you are told there is nothing wrong or even scolded by a doctor - KEEP PUSHING. YOU (and your insurance company) are paying your Doctor. They work for you. YOU CAN FIRE THEM and hire someone else who will listen. I now interview every doctor. If I don't like their approach to my care, I leave! Don't be BULLIED like I was... Doctors are human and make mistakes. They PRACTICE Medicine. F 40 1 months

1  Body rash I started losing my vision and kidney function. It took 3 months for my vision to stabilize and 6 months for my kidney function to return to normal. I had to search for information concerning this drug. I found my experience listed under rare side effects. This information wasn't included in the description package insert. F 59 31 days

3  Ulcerative Colitis Initially it worked well when I was first diagnosed 15 years ago. Had a recent flare up and started it again but much less effective this time. I increased dose from 2000 mg daily to 3000 mg daily. Symptoms got a lot worse: frequent headaches, lost weight, BM urgency, no appetite, gas, running for the bathroom, sunburned fast, thirsty. I just gave it up a couple days ago and switched to LIALDA - similar ingredients but without the sulfa (less liver damage). In just a couple of days, WHAT A VAST IMPROVEMENT ON LIALDA! Too bad it's so expensive but worth it so far for more control, less bathroom time and NO MORE HEADACHES! F 44 3 months

5  spondylarthropy changes in digestive tract feel like it has really started to control my pain; have less pain at night, although still stiff by morning. Am hoping that will continue to improve as I've heard can take a couple months to become fully effective. We may try increasing my dosage too if my digestive issues subside F 39 1 months

5  Ulcerative Colitis none whatsoever This medicine started working immediately for me, and I've been symptom free ever since I started taking it. My doctor says it may not work for me forever, but for now I'm happy to have my life back! M 40 3 months

1  Spondyloarthropathy Diarrhea, very severe headaches, intense dizzyness, felt very dehydrated and neck pain. These side effects were worst than my arthritis pain. I even was crying and felt so agitated, thought I was losing my mind.Maybe for some people it works but my body couldn't tolerate 1500mg and I was suppose to go up to 3000mg per day. F 19 30 days

1  Spondyloarthropathy I only took this for 9 days and in that time my pain became worse. I had more joint pain, shooting pains in my arms and legs, muscle twitching in my legs, headaches, constant reflux, dry mouth, fever, nausea and weird dreams that felt so real I wasn't sure if they were dreams or hallucinations or if they really happened. I was irritable, itchy all over, had severe hayfever like symptoms, painful urination and ended up in the ER where I was diagnosed with Pleurisy. After stopping the medication all the above symptoms gradually decreased and then went away. I would not use this again for any reason. This is a sulfur based medication. Be cautious of taking it if you have ever had a reaction to a sulfur based antibiotic such as bactrim, septrim etc F 42 9 days

5  Ulcerative Colitis No side effects noticed. It has taken a couple of months for the medicine to have an effect but it has been working very well and I am feeling much better! I am currently reducing my dosage of prednisone and should be off of it completely in 3 weeks. I am curious to see how I do when just on the sulfasalazine. F 34 2 months
