SPIRONOLACTONE  (SPIRONOLACTONE):  Spironolactone is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. It is also used to treat swelling (edema) caused by certain conditions (such as heart failure, liver disease) by removing excess fluid and improving symptoms such as breathing problems. This medication is also used to treat low potassium levels and conditions in which the body is making too much of a natural chemical (aldosterone). Spironolactone is known as a "water pill" (potassium-sparing diuretic).   FDA Approval Date: 1999-07-29 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  hormonal acne slightly lightheaded from time to time and made my periods irregular spironolactone plus tretinoin and a very simple, fragrance-free skin care routine really did wonders for my hormonal acne. it took about 3 months to finally see my skin clearing up. i still have acne marks left but no more pimples and tiny bumps! my skin is definitely the best it has ever been. another bonus is not losing as much hair daily. so much of my hair used to fall out in the shower because of the hormonal imbalance but that has dramatically decreased. the only side effect i really disliked is my period becoming irregular.  3  Hormonal Acne While my skin cleared up dramatically, I started to notice random eye twitching, increased urination, increased thirst, anxiety, numbness, and irregular periods once my doctor increased my dose from 50 mg a day to 100 mg. I only now started researching what others have also experienced. I really regret not doing more research beforehand. I do not think the side effects are worth it at all. F 33 5 months

1  Acne Weight gain, severe fatigue, anxiety and depression, excessive thirst, sore breasts, breast enlargement. Weight shot up 25 lbs in two months without any changes to diet and fitness regimen. Weight will not drop despite increasing activity and adjusting calories and macros. Very anxious and depressed with panic attacks. It did clear up my acne but the rest of my body is ruined. Doctors repeatedly dismiss my claims that this caused such rapid weight gain. Taking this medication was my biggest mistake. Returning to normal feels hopeless. F 32 5 months

1  Acne Sever anxiety and panic attacks, fear of things I have never been scared of. Increased Heart rate I started taking this medication 5-6 months ago and I have never had any issues with it until a month ago I stopped taking it for 8 days and I started getting very bad panic attacks and anxiety attacks my heart rate would shoot up to 180 every time I have had a panic attack so I started taking it again to see if the medication was the reason I was having these panic attacks and 3-4 weeks later my panic attacks went from sever to mild. My doctor put me on 100mg to start with which I feel was high to start off with. I cannot drive, go into stores or gas stations with out thinking something bad is going to happen to me. I have never had a panic attack until I started taking these meds. Made an appointment so I can get off of them hopefully this works for me I just want my normal life back where I did not have any of these issues F 22 5 months

3  Acne Restless sleep, trouble falling asleep, chest pain, anxiety, panic attacks I wish I knew sooner the mental side effects of this medication. My dermatologist prescribed it without ease not making me think of possible precautions. I struggle with anxiety in my adolescent life, but this medication brought out the worst of my mental health- unexplainable panic attacks making me unable to take a full breath while my entire body gets numb. The first side effect was not being able to fall asleep at night after closing my eyes for 2-3 hours. This extra restlessness/anxiety/panic disorder created sever bags under my eyes and non-needed chest pain. This medication should be taken off the market and EVERY doctor should fully tell their patients the side effects- mental or physical. F 22 4 months

3  acne Dizziness, headaches, dry eye, clogged meibomian glands I started on 25/day. Had dizziness, headaches. A month ago I was increased to 2X/day and within a week my eyes hurt horribly. The oil glands in my eyes are completely clogged. I just read that spiro can cause MGD because your oil glands need the androgens. F 43 4 months

3  hair loss, excessive testosterone very irregular periods, only 4 day breaks between periods. i also experience chronic nightmares which i have researched can be a side effect of spiro. i am writing to update you. it has been 4 months of spiro and my cystic acne has returned just as bad if not worse than before. my hair loss is the same. the only good it is doing for me right now is keeping my body hair under control somewhat.  2   Weight gain. I am very fit and gaining 15 pounds in 3 months was awful. I have been off the drug for 3 months now and I still can't get rid of the weight. Used to be proud of my body and now I hate looking in a mirror. Breast enlargement- returned to normal after stopped taking it. Nausea-thankfully stopped. Muscle loss-has not returned since stopping. Skin elasticity loss- not returned since stopping. My sex drive didn't exist- returned. I'm happy it cleared my cystic acne but it came at a very high cost of weight gain and loss of muscle mass for me that has not returned to normal. To those that say it's not effective under 150/100mg, not true! I had it work for cystic acne and bad side effects at 25mg. F 33 4 months

1  Hair thinning Weight gain, fat around the middle, increased hair loss Took to help with hair loss even though my testosterone was already super low. My Derm said I needed to take it to stop more hair loss. I gained 7 pounds in 4 months while working out and eating as I normally did. I have been off for 2 months still trying to lose the weight but feel better off of it. My hair did not improve at all, in fact it looked worse. Not sure if that was a result of medicine or if it simply did not work for me and would have lost more anyway. F 44 4 months

1  Hormonal acne Spironolactone cleared my hormonal cystic acne wonderfully.. and thats about all the good it did. After around 2 months of taking it I noticed that every other day I was feeling dizzy and having diarrhea. Every single day I was exhausted, keeping myself from falling asleep at work. I drink a lot of water throughout the day, always, and I was limited potassium rich foods. I read about taking the spiro at night to try to limit these side effects, but that didn't help. After 3.5 months I went on a camping trip and forgot my spiro at home. After 2 days of no spiro the side effects were gone. However, on the third day when I got back home I decided to continue taking the spiro. It all went down hill after that. I started getting severe anxiety and heart palpitations. A few short days later I'm laying around watching TV and my heart rate was super high and I was just sitting around thinking it will go away. I try to go lay down and go to bed and the palpitations will not go away and just feel like impending doom. So at 2am, after like 3 hours of no relief, I make my husband take me to the ER because I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack. Luckily I got a bed quickly and they gave me an ekg, heart monitor, blood work. Everything was normal, my heart rate was back to normal, and I was sent home at 5am. They told me to keep taking the spiro and consult my doctor at a follow up appointment. I kept taking it for a few more days until my appointment - extreme anxiety, palpitations (not as severe as the ER visit night) and horrible insomnia every day. My doctor told me to stop the spiro cold turkey. She also had me take further diagnostic tests - hormones, white blood cell count, diabetes, and others. All came back normal. So here I am today, almost 3 months of being off the spironolactone. Still getting increased hart rate and palpitations. Still having heightened anxiety. Still unable to easily fall asleep.
