SPIRONOLACTONE  (SPIRONOLACTONE):  Spironolactone is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. It is also used to treat swelling (edema) caused by certain conditions (such as heart failure, liver disease) by removing excess fluid and improving symptoms such as breathing problems. This medication is also used to treat low potassium levels and conditions in which the body is making too much of a natural chemical (aldosterone). Spironolactone is known as a "water pill" (potassium-sparing diuretic).   FDA Approval Date: 1999-07-29 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Cystic acne, oily skin Started at 50mg for 2-3 months, no side effects, acne clears faster, less oily, less acne, but still breaking out. Then up to 100mg for last 3 months, skin is looking great! After month 5 started having issues with nausea. Strange it didn’t start right away. I already suffer from GAD, don’t think it has gotten worse. I did recently start taking 5 htp with my anxiety that I’ve had for many years. I want to keep taking. Hopefully nausea will continue to get better. Feel like PMS has gotten worse. F 39 6 months

5  Scalp Hair Loss/Facial Hair Growth Frequent urination, thirsty, weight loss, fatigue Despite my nervousness about taking a medication long-term, I decided to take spironolactone, and for the last 6 months, it has been super. Besides having to run to the restroom every 30 min (my coworkers swore I was pregnant), it's been great, and the intake in water has been good daily routine. Between the pill and Weight Watchers, I've lost roughly 15 lbs, and I feel very good. My hair is starting to grow back and I can visually see results, even with my fine hair. Although facial hair continues to be an issue, it's no longer a daily-maintenance thing. I do feel sleepy a lot earlier in the evenings lately, but that could be seasonal too. F 26 6 months

5  Hidradenitis suppurativa CURED HS!! Dry Mouth & spotting a few days before period starts. Completely cleared my HS. I had mild/moderate cysts with occasional drainage, a small amount of pitting (2 areas), but no more than 3 cysts at a time. I also used to get an occasional cyst around genital area (usually ended up pitting there). I had extreme pain and swelling under my arms with itching prior to starting spiro. I started out at 50 mg a day for 3 months. The dose helped reduce pain, but did not clear my armpit cysts completely. I lost 10lbs. After taking the 50mg for 3 months, my dermatologist upped me to 100mg. The first month I still got one cyst on my armpits here and there, but since then I have been cyst-free for almost 2 months now! My weight has remained the same (150lb, I'm 5'5, athletic build), but since taking the 100mg dose my face is much less puffy!. It took about a month on the 100mg dose to completely clear my armpits. I still experience discomfort and some itchiness under my arms, but my skin doing great. I also used to get occasional cystic acne on my back, which has gone away completely since starting spiro. The side effects can be tough, especially the first few months, but now I barely experience anything (besides dry mouth). I feel like I have more energy and confidence since starting this medication. The side effects ARE a little strong, but it has reduced the extreme pain from my HS and increased my quality of life ten fold. F 20 6 months

4  severe bloating prior to periods occasional dizziness/fatigue, abdominal cramping for the first few months This drug has really helped me in many ways. I used to gain about 10 lbs everytime I menstruated (I am 5' tall so it looked like I gained 2 jean sizes every month). Now I gain only 3-5 and it is manageable. Other pluses-improvement in acne/oily skin, and somehow my periods have regulated, even though I am not currently on birth control. F 22 6 months

4  hairloss none i'm taking 75 mg per day, started off at 25 and slowly worked my way up. I haven't noticed any bad side-effects, and i'm pretty careful to avoid foods high in potassium. My hair loss has stopped, but i'm not sure if this is due to spiro or the rogaine treatment i'm also using. no real regrowth yet, by my periods have gotten a lot easier! F 33 6 months

3  PCOS, hirsuitism Kidney stones, weight gain after going off. This drug did what it was supposed to do. It slowed my hair growth and made it lighter on my arms, legs, and prevented new whiskers from forming on my face. It caused me to lose 5 pounds of water weight while I was on it, which was nice... Until I got kidney stones, most likely from the chronic dehydration caused by this drug - it is a diuretic. I ended up in the emergency room in horrible pain and discontinued taking it at that time. I have since gained 10 pounds in 6 weeks. I'm assuming 5 pounds of water weight and 5 pounds of fat. The side effects were not worth the benefits for me, even though it did what it was supposed to do. I advise staying very hydrated if you are on this drug. F 25 6 months

2  Acne Anxiety, depression, constant bathroom use, headaches This has been a miracle pill for my acne. It all started with product use erupting my skin but then it seemed to have turned hormonal. My derm first put me on doxy (which that caused extreme anxiety as well... was on it for 4-5 months) but that is only short term then transitioned into spiro. It worked so well but early in (which i didnt make the comnection until a few days ago) I felt off. Ive never had anxiety in my life and everything became massive to me. I was irritable and unkind which is the complete opposite of who I am normally. It was like I knew how I was acting and would try to control it but my body would not physically let me. It got to the point where I started to see a therapist and more recently thought a therapist wasnt cutting it, i needed someone who could perscribe me something. I didnt know how to escape this overwhelming feeling of hopelessness. I even told my therapist a few weeks ago, “i dont want to die. But i dont want to be around.” I couldnt figure it out because there were no outside factors causing me to feel this way and i didnt even think of the medication since i wasnt informed that this could be a side effect. Im on day 3 of not taking it and the anxiety has slowed down noticeably. I have no dount that if i wouldnt have made the correlation and stopped taking this, it wouldve gotten worse. Def a miracle for your skin and facial hair (i had peach fuzz that was noticeable and now its gone) but i wouldnt recommend it. Your mental he F 31 6 months

1  Hormonal acne I experienced the worst anxiety of my life, panic attacks, nausea and stomach pain. I was taking other medications at the time so I never made the connection until I finally felt like I was dying and slowly stopped taking some of the medications until I stopped the spirnolactone. There was instant relief. I would never take this again. F 21 6 months

1  Acne Spironolactone was supposed to treat my acne, it did, but it also caused severe anxiety and depression, the kind where I was rushed to the hospital several times for hyperventilating from panic attacks. Note that prior to that I never had anxiety or depression. I spent months bedridden, scared of leaving my apartment, severely depressed. Several dermatologists recommended I take Spironolactone to fix my acne issue. I took it twice, for 3 and 6 month intervals each and after starting it each time, went into severe depression. I didn’t make the link the first time and glad I did now. Look forward to trying to get off the anti depressants I have been taking for years as a result of Spiranolactone. If recommended to treat your acne, stay away from it. F 24 6 months

5  hair loss 1 week adjustment period where I had insatiable cravings for salt and couldn't drink enough water. Since then: inside of my nose is often very dry, get headaches more easily, my fingernails are thinner and tear easily, and I get leg cramps at night. I have to be more careful than before to drink enough water every day. Still, great med. Totally worth it. I convinced my doctor to prescribe this for me based on what I had read (by endocrinologist,Geoffrey Redmond) about how it can help stop hormone-related hair loss for some women. Apparently, it's working. Hair loss has very substantially slowed in the 5 months i've been taking it(though, no regrowth). What really surprised me though was the astonishing improvement in my skin. All my acne - which hasn't really responded to any treatment I've tried during the 30+ years i've battled it - virtually vanished within 2 weeks. My skin used to feel oily and gritty and I was never without pimples; now it's smoother than it's been since I was 10 years old. I'm amazed and thrilled at this unanticipated benefit. I should also mention that I am taking a very low dose of 25mg. I'd read that you should start with a low dose and work up to at least 100 mg to be effective, but it was already working great at 25mg and when I upped it to 50 mg, my side effects got worse, so I'm holding steady at 25 mg.  4  hormonal acne frequent urination, increased need for water. It works well. I have been taking 100 mg for over 5 months and have very little side effects other than mentioned. It works well. F 37 5 months

4  High Blood Pressure At 25mg a day I had bad irritability and still struggle with that. Sleepy after taking but if taking at night insomnia. I had high BP during the day and at night it was really high in the over 180 for the top number and over 100 at times on the bottom number. Spiro has cured that even at the low dose that I'm taking.
