SPIRONOLACTONE  (SPIRONOLACTONE):  Spironolactone is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. It is also used to treat swelling (edema) caused by certain conditions (such as heart failure, liver disease) by removing excess fluid and improving symptoms such as breathing problems. This medication is also used to treat low potassium levels and conditions in which the body is making too much of a natural chemical (aldosterone). Spironolactone is known as a "water pill" (potassium-sparing diuretic).   FDA Approval Date: 1999-07-29 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  Hormonal acne Increased anxiety. Dry mouth which was bearable , increased toilet visits. Seemed to be starting to help my acne however I am feeling very anxious. I am currently experiencing a stressful time so possibly this is related but I feel it at least makes anxiety worse. I will stop use and possibly try at a less stressful period if needed.  2  PCOS (hirstutism, mood swings) Anxiety, panic attacks leading to ER visit. Have had moderate anxiety in the past, but never recurrent anxiety and/or panic attacks. Worst one, i felt like I couldn't breathe and was hyperventilating, arms and hands went numb and cramped so much my fingernails were digging into my palms, and my boyfriend ended up calling an ambulance. It lasted 3 hrs in the ER until they finally gave me Lorazepam. F 42 90 days

1  Hormonal acne Ive been experiencing severe anxiety attacks and mood swings, and some occasional depression. My pharmacist said that this wasnt caused by the drug, but theres nothing else in my life that could have caused it. It did help to clear up my acne, but its not worth the constant anxiety in my opinion. F 22 90 days

1  Acne First, this didn't really help with my anxiety. I've been taking it about 3 months & still have awful hormonal acne. Second, let's talk about the psychological torture this drug puts you through. I have always had anxiety but, typically it is only triggered when I'm overly stressed or travel... I always have a good head on my shoulders to be able to push out overwhelming thoughts or to stop overthinking. Last week I had an awful anxiety attack & could not stop thinking about the cause of my anxiety. It was almost an obsessive thought or like excessive overthinking. I thought it was just me being anxious but, then I started doing research & realized that the spironolactone was the root cause of this. Spironolactone decreases androgen production in your body... androgens are needed to synthesize estrogen & regulate overall hormone levels... now it all makes sense. So not worth the psychological stress it puts you under. Definitely DO NOT recommend this. F 23 90 days

4  Acne Within the past 3 days I have had pretty severe breast pain and tenderness. It is pretty constant. No other side effects and I am disappointed this is happening now. It feels like when I was breastfeeding and had mastitis, except without the nausea and feeling unwell. Cleared my acne quickly Potential weight gain but not sure if due to quarantine or the drug, breast pain and tenderness F 36 80 days

1  PCOS, Hair loss, unwanted hair grow Thirst, dizziness, dry skin, droopy eye lids, fine lines, irritability. In one month hair growth slowed down, don't really need to shave at all. I thought this drug was a miracle. But after 2 months my skin looks older, there are fine lines everywhere. The WORST part is within only TWO MONTHS my eyelids droop SIGNIFICANTLY. My 55 year old mother has younger looking eyes than me now and I must stress, this happened within 2 months. My face looking younger for my age was my one saving grace, despite being hairy at least I had that. Aldactone took that away from me. I am so depressed. F 35 60 days

1  Acne Anger, anxiety, depression, dizziness Please please do the research before starting this drug. It did amazing things for my acne, but around week 4 I started noticing some anxiety, depression, and anger. I struggle with extreme anxiety and ocd thoughts but I have it pretty much under control with medication and therapy. When I first started noticing the changes in how I felt, I knew it had to be something newly started because I've been on my normal routine with meds and therapy for 2 years now. I felt so “off”. After doing the research, I now understand that I am not alone in the side effects that I experienced. It was a lot of crying, not eating, extreme anxiety, panic attacks, and getting angry easily or snapping at people for no reason. 2 days off the meds and still dealing with things but I'm hoping once I get this out of my system and cleanse I will be feeling better than ever.  5  hair loss; scalp pain; facial hair slight dizziness when getting up too quickly; dry mouth; thirst My scalp pain has stopped, but the dermatologist also gave me two topical treatments and I started using Free and Clear shampoo and conditioner, so who knows which of the four things worked! Too soon to tell about the hair loss, but the facial hair is less noticable, and is growing back in much more slowly. My blood pressure had been creeping up to bordlerline high after a lifetime of low/normal bp, and after starting this medication my bp is back down where it should be. I've lost about 7 pounds since starting it -- it seems easier to watch my diet now. Normally I put ON weight in the winter, so it's great to go into spring lighter than last fall. F 59 45 days

1  Acne Depression, anxiety, extreme tiredness, inability to focus at work I started taking this to combat acne caused by a hormone imbalance related to multiple surgeries and treatments for endometriosis. The first ten days I could barely get out of bed I felt so generally sick. Then, I started having intense anxiety and depression with very dark thoughts. I also have been throwing up every time I work out. F 29 42 days

1  hormonal acne Weight gain, brain fog, fatigue, loss of muscle tone, constipation, huge bloated belly. I was prescribed spironolactone to counteract cystic acne and extreme male pattern baldness -- a side effect of being overdosed (24 mg.) with bilateral injections of betamethasone into my knees over a year ago. Note that I am 74 years old and never had cystic acne in my life. I was a little afraid to take the spiro but I had reached the point where an acne nodule developed on the side bridge of my nose that was huge and had to be injected by my dermatologist with Kenalog. I was prescribed 50mg daily of sprio. Within two weeks my acne cleared and within 3 I started to see my hair regrow. But I also was getting a bloated belly and became constipated. Then I noticed weight gain. By week 4 I went from 101 to 103.5 lbs. I noticed no diuretic effect as I am already taking furosemide for edema. I started the drug on February 5, 2021 and stopped taking it on March 10, 2021. So 103.5 when I stopped. Today is March 19, 2021 and I have continued to gain weight. I am now up to 106 pounds!!!! I never weigh that much.. I am fit for my age -- eat under 1000 calories daily and hike 10-15 miles a week. I am freaking out and hoping that once my body readjusts the 5 plus pounds of flab will come off. I can not believe that doctors do not warn their patients that this drug causes massive weight gain in almost every one that takes it. A horrible drug!!!!! F 74 35 days

5  excessive testosterone, acne, hair the first two weeks of taking this pill, i experienced intense cramping in my abdomen, nausea, fatigue, chest pains, and tingling in my limbs. made me on my period for 3 weeks now. After the first two weeks, almost all of my side effects disappeared. now, i feel great except for the fact that i have been spotting for 3 weeks. my acne, including my cystic acne has cleared considerably. my hair loss has continued, but i have researched that it can take up to a full year to help with that issue. ive only been on it for 1 month and so far so good. i will keep you posted.  1  Acne I have only been taking spironolactone for a month, and during this time, I have developed intense panic attacks, signs of depersonalization, and extremely intrusive and disturbing thoughts. I've had to call out of work and spend all day crying in my bed, and have had to call my mother who lives across the country crying at midnight. If you have anxiety or panic disorder like I do, please reconsider going on this medication. I'm afraid I will never feel better and afraid I will have to live the rest of my life like this.
