LIPITOR  (ATORVASTATIN CALCIUM):  Atorvastatin is used along with a proper diet to help lower "bad" cholesterol and fats (such as LDL, triglycerides) and raise "good" cholesterol (HDL) in the blood. It belongs to a group of drugs known as "statins." It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol made by the liver. Lowering "bad" cholesterol and triglycerides and raising "good" cholesterol decreases the risk of heart disease and helps prevent strokes and heart attacks. In addition to eating a proper diet (such as a low-cholesterol/low-fat diet), other lifestyle changes that may help this medication work better include exercising, losing weight if overweight, and stopping smoking. Consult your doctor for more details.   (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA) FDA Approval Date: 2000-04-07

1  High cholesterol Constantly sore quadriceps. Lived with the soreness and pain for several years. I'm in very good shape, but soreness was severe enough it was difficult to descend stairs without assistance of the handrail. Went off it with doctor's approval and soreness went away after a couple weeks. I didn't use for 4 months, but cholesterol zoomed. Doctor recommended re-trying as a test but within two days the pain completely returned. Have now switched permanently off it. M 71 3 years

1  Cholesterol Muscle and Joint Aches and pains specifically in knees-elbows-wrists, vertigo, anxiety, headaches, nerve issues, tremors, tingling and loss of feeling in fingers and tremors in hands to name just a few. Leg and arm would feel weak. Have stopped for five days now and symptoms have improved but nowhere back to normal. M 58 2 years

1  High total & ldl cholesterol Body pain - joints & muscles; incredible fatigue; flu like feeling; thought it was fibromyalgia. Went off it 2 times and symptoms vanished. Now off it and on ketovore; symptoms resolved. LDL high but due to low carb diet. Terrible drug; no valid studies show that cholesterol causes heart problems. Fact: LDL goes up on very low carb diet; fact: triglycerides/HDL more imp as is ldl particle size & #. F 73 3 days

5  High LDL and overall high cholester Leg pain, some minor aches. But this drug is awesome for lowering my cholesterol, especially LDL. So many negative reviews. Yes there are side effects, but I'd rather be alive with low LDL than have a stroke or heart attack. Fantastic drug! Don't be scared off by the negative comments. This drug is a life saver!  1  High cholesterol Leg pain, joint problems, dizziness This drug is so bad it should be taken off the market! I took this for 6 years. I stopped it in 2024 after I could barely walk. My doctor said to stop it and then have a blood test and if it’s gone up think about another statin. My levels were high so I’m now on Rosuvastatin, much better. I don’t know why this is the first line drug. Bad cholesterol is sadly in my family. My 16 year old great nephew is on Rosuvastatin. F 43 6 years

3  Calcium score Achy muscles and joints, weight gain especially around the belly. I'm normally active and have healthy lifestyle. It reduces my cholesterol but not liking the side effects. This is my 3rd statin I've tried. Overall, I don't think benefit outweighs risk in my case. F 57 30 days

1  High Cholesterol I'm no longer taking this medication. "I was on several years with few adverse effects, which is why it took me so long to deduce that statins were causing my problems. I was all happy that despite my deteriorating mental and physical health, my cholesterol was low. Once I realized the cause and after years of fighting with my PCP (who always told me "statins don't cause that") I put my foot down and got off them. Since then, the adverse effects have all subsided (some took longer than others). " M 67 10 years

1  dr said I had high cholesterol I'm no longer taking this medication. I stopped taking three weeks ago now and still have most of the symptoms mentioned before Aching legs, muscles in thighs and calves very tight, unable to walk properly. However since I stopped I have some new symptoms - weakness in arms, tremors in hands, dizziness, pain in flank (like kidney pain but dr says it isn't), nausea, numbness in feet. I have no idea if these symptoms are related as they did only start a few days after I stopped the drug but I have read that these symptoms have been experiences by people taking this drug. F 68

3  High Cholesterol I'm no longer taking this medication. I do not take any drugs now, just try to keep my cholesterol low with diet and exercise (works a bit). Wee all need some cholesterol. I am prepared to take my chance and not poison myself with drugs. Although this medicine did reduce my cholesterol I was not happy with the side effects. I still get them from time to time and have not taken the drug for about 6 months. F 67 3 months

1  hugh cholesterol Well I get drug interactions easily and told my doctor I hoped there were no dude effects. He assured me at 10 mg nothing would happen! after about 4 days of taking it my heart rate shot up to 120 beats a minute. Fluttering and skipping beats. I saw a cardiologist it was so bad! was scheduled for all kinds of tests. After another day I took lipitor and right after my heart began to go wild! I stopped the pill right away and in a couple days my heart rate was 75. I looked up side effects and number one was racing and pounding and high heart rate! I will never take it again! what a nightmare F 70 10 days

1  Hospitalized for Stroke Severe joint pain, bad acid reflux, muscle pains, terrible flatulence. I had none of these issues prior to taking this Rx. I told the Dr that I refused to continue Lipitor & I'd rather die. That's how awful it made me feel. I do not have high cholesterol, but it's the standard treatment with blood thinners after a stroke. I'm now on Crestor & so far no issues. F 63 4 days
