1  Allergic reaction depression, irritability, restlessness (but at the same time drowsiness), couldn't concentrate, loss of appetite, motion sickness, emotional... I hate the brand BENADRYL, but I find that if you buy an off brand it is somewhat better. F 13 1 months

4  Insomnia None that I can pinpoint as to being caused by Benadryl. I have listed insomnia as why I take Benadryl but that is really not the case. I have an enlarged prostate and this results in having to urinate at night. Once I wake up I cannot go back to sleep. For some reason when I take Benadryl I am able to go 6-8 hours without waking up to urinate. I have taken this off and on for 5 or 6 years M 62 5 years

4  As a sleep aid I loved the way this helped me sleep, but read about side effects. Memory problems and tintinitis are two problems I have noticed that may be caused by this drug. F 64 5 years

1  allergic reaction Loss of Appetite, easily motion sickness, pressure on right side of head, panic attacks at night when my body tried to go to sleep Had an allergic reaction and went to the ER on a Sunday. They gave me a shot of benedryl and told me to take 25mg of benedryl every 4-6 hours. I took the medication until Wednesday night. I stopped because of all the symptoms mentioned. It has now been 5 days since I stopped taking it and still feel the effects. F 27 4 days

5  insomnia I haven't experienced any side effects that I know of, that's why I consulted this page, to see if there were any. I had insomnia for years, coupled with anxious thoughts about things I couldn't directly control at that moment, like child abuse or world hunger. I would be awake for about 3 hours a night, from 2 until 5. I was exhausted. It was wrecking me. I took a couple of Benedryl in the spring once for allergies, and it changed my life. It's great stuff. I take 2 every night before bed. Target brand works the same for cheaper. F 42

5  Allergy and Related Insomnia No side effects if taken 15 to 30 minutes before going to bed. 50mg basically knocks me out for about 6 hours. I do, however, wake up if the phone rings or if someone pokes me or yells at me. I then fall right back to sleep. 25mg only lets me sleep for about 3-4 hours and then I am awake until morning. I tried two Excederine PM which has 38mg per tabet. With this dose, my vision blurred after about 20 minutes and the next thing I remember my wife was explaining that I had been asleep for more that eight hours and she had trouble waking me.  4  pink eye/swollen eyes tiredness i am not sure if the medication helped, but when i couldn't get an erection, i thought it must be the benadryl, not the cipro eye drops, i couldn't beleive it cause i have never had a problem with that.... M 35 2 days

2  allergy relief, insomnia Akathisia (restlessness, similar to restless leg syndrome), agitation, unpredictable drowsiness, nausea A lot of people don't know that diphenhydramine is the active ingredient in the allergy medicine Benadryl and in most OTC sleep aids. I've even found it in motion sickness drugs and NON-DROWSY allergy medication. Needless to say, its positive effects aren't too dependable, and its negative effects (agitation) are never welcome. Occasionally it does manage to dry up my nose, but it's also made me ralph, even when unprovoked by windy car rides, so go figure. F 25 3 years

1  Insomnia Ringing ears I stopped the benadryl two days ago, and the loud ringing has not yet stopped. M 52 3 weeks

2  hives Severe drowsiness. I took it and 45 minutes later I literally could not keep my eyes open. It was very annoying. I have taken Benadryl twice, both for allergic reactions to antibiotics. It cleared up a mild allergic rash to amoxicillin, but it did absolutely nothing for a more severe rash/hives in response to sulfa drugs. I had to be switched to Zyrtec, which cost a lot more but did not have the overwhelming drowsiness associated with Benadryl and cleared up the rash very fast. F 18 3 times

1  allergies and insomnia anxiety, grogginess, sleeplessness, nightmares, urinary problems, nausea, muscle aches I started taking benadryl for food and pollen allergies and then started using it to help with insomnia and to calm down quite often for last 20 years. I am trying to go with out it now and would like to hear from others for how long it took them to feel better not taking it. It seemed to go thru times where it would not work and then work again after a break form it. I never realized the symptoms I was trying to take it for are also the symptoms it can cause. It does make you sleep but it wears off after 4-5 hours and leaves a definite hangover the next day and fuzzy thinking. I have gone without it 2 weeks now and am still detoxing would really like to hear from others trying to stop using it. F 47 20 days

3  trouble falling asleep We gave benadryl to our daughter because it seemed she could not fall asleep. She started having to urinate frequently (15-20 times /day), sometimes painfully. Didn't ascribe it to benadryl until reading this. We are not going to use benadryl anymore. Chamomile tea and guided relaxation are now our best bet. F 9 6 days

1  allergies & insomnia at first it helped my insomnia but upon regular use (once allergy season began), my insomnia worsened to the point where I would take two at about midnight and not be able to fall asleep at all until 5 a.m. I think this is a dangerous drug. F 46 2 months

5  Insomnia Haven't detected any to date I decided to use Benedryl children's liquid formula to help with my son's insomnia at the suggestion of his day care provider. It works wonderfully, providing him with a timely good nights sleep. I mix it with flavored water about an hour or so before bed and bath. It's sort of routine now to serve it along with a portion of pretzel's to help induce his thirst and it works. He wakes up very alert and chipper. I'm extremely pleased with the results, although am cautioned as to what long term effects may prevail. M 4 6 months

1  allergies & insomnia frequent urination, UTI, pain in kidneys, HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE (and I work out 5-6 times a week) thanks everybody for posting; I was freaked out about high bp (for the first time in my life); am now starting to feel better & the other urinary symptoms are going away, too; had taken benadryl almost every day for months & months; although it helped with allergies & insomnia, the side effects for me aren't worth it F 40 10 months
