| 3 | insomnia | The main and more noticeable side effects were frequent urination, mild ringing in ears, drowsiness (obviously), heart fluttering and strange feelings. | I've taken generic benadryl on and off for a total of three years, and for a long time it really helped my insomnia. I thought it would be a much better solution to my sleeping problems, instead of relying on "heavier" medications that are highly addicting such as Xanax. Lately, I've noticed symptoms that I had not noticed when first taking it. Now, whenever I take it I sometimes feel my heart fluttering (sorry I don't know med-speak so I don't know the exact term). Also, I fall into a deep sleep for a good four hours, and wake up at around 3:30 AM, unable to fall back asleep and feeling like I've slept for 15 hours. Yet, throughout the day I am still groggy, and sometimes feel a sort of strangeness that's somewhat hard to explain. The best word to describe it is dissociation, not feeling exactly like yourself and that something isn't right. I'd only ever recommend taking this rarely, and at half the recommended dosage. Seems like it's simply not worth it. As one person said, I'd rather lay in bed awake with insomnia than hurt my body and feel loopy all day the next day. Perhaps one person was right and said it could be a reaction to the red dye in tablets. The drug also has a great way of making me feel happy, content, and at peace with the world around me. I am normally a very high energy person and this drug calms me down and just makes me feel so happy. They really don't make me sleepy during the day because they also help me sleep much better at night. I get a good night's rest without waking up in the middle of the night so often. So for about 3 cents a day, I sleep good, I can sing again, and I feel downright happy. This drug is a huge answer to my prayers. However, I can see if you don't normally have high energy, it could make you feel depressed. It just makes me feel normal. I read that it calms the brain and that is very true in my case.
