5  Itching and hives very drowsy yet relaxed; dry mouth, experience some light-headedness the next day. Went to the dermatologist since I had itching, hives, and rashlike bumps for two years. Rashes formed around my arm, leg, back and stomach areas, even my scalp. I was diagnosed with neurodermatitis eczema, a form of stress where itching and rash develop and he mentioned it may also be due to hormones because of my age. Prescribed meds, lotions or certain soaps did not work. Cool baths and Benadryl seemed to be the only thing that helps when I am itching and hives appear. I try not to depend on it, but find it prevents me from scratching and I'm able to feel normal and sleep well and not feel itching. I take 2 (25mg ea.) when it's really bad and 1 mg. when it's slight. F 50 2 years

1  allergic reaction to betadine When they opened up the cast to check the incision, they put betadine on the incision before closing the cast back up. When the cast was taken off, the betadine had burned the skin & it was burning & itching inside the next cast that was put on. The surgeon prescribed benadryl for the reaction I had & right after taking it I started having difficulty breathing similar to anaphalactic shock. It wasn't bad enough to go to the ER but stopped taking it immdediately & my breathing went back to normal I only took one dose & almost immediately had the problem. I seem to have allergic reactions to most medications so benadryl was just added to my list. F 40

1  allergy Loss of body and mind control. Shaky and confused. Resulted in what I could only explain as a panic attack. Took 50mg in the morning for a cat allergy after a night of heavy drinking. I don't know if this reaction was only due to my already fragile state but I'm not scared easily and this was the strangest thing that ever happened to me(freaked me out.) I would recommend not taking on a sever hangover. M 29 1 days

5  insomnia i have had severe insomnia for years. i started using diphenhydramine a year or so ago and it does really help. none of the side effects (like dry mouth or hangover-like effects) really bother me but you build up a tolerance and eventually need more and more to cause effect. without it im awake for days, not pleasant.  1  sleep i'm fairly healthy & take nothing but vitamins..after 3rd night of taking (diphenhydramine) no more than the recommended 50 mg dose, began to feel the CNS effects others have described: lethargy, fatigue, depression. personally, will not continue to use as a sleep aid. of note, i was taking a generic brand.  4  Sleeping Problems Groggy the next morning, a bit of a hangover feeling My grandmother was a head nurse at a prominent hospital in Florida. She used to give it to all of her kids and grandkids before it was over the counter, when it came in a prescription bottle. We joke that that is why we all enjoy drinking alcohol, because we grew up on benadryl. It works well for sleeping issues and I have never had any issues. It works well for allergies as well. I probably take it 2 or 3 times a month or a few times a week if I'm stressed and having sleeping issues. F 28 25 years

3  Insomnia Knocked me out cold, but made me depressed. Benadryl works amazingly as a sleep aid. No matter what state i'm in, if i take Benadryl i know that i'll be on my way to sleep within (maybe) a half an hour or less (i've never timed it). But i've been depressed (and a little stressed), and it seemed to come out of nowhere...it's very debilitating. And i'm certain that it is from benadryl. Being depressed, it's much harder to get through my day than it is with no sleep. SO i'm going to stop taking it. F 20 2 weeks

4  skin rash, poison ivy VERY SLEEPY about an hour after taking my dose. Try to take a nap if you can. DO NOT DRINK! And do not drive (or operate 'heavy machinery'). Afterward it makes me a little wired. Side effects are well tolerated for the relief it provides. Very effective relief from skin rashes, poison ivy, etc. Seems to cure poison ivy but i'm not sure about other afflictions. When it wears off my skin rash comes back so it doesn't cure everything.  4  insomnia Helps me sleep altho I will wake up every two/three hours but will fall back to sleep. After taking for approximately a month - (25mg only before I go to bed) I am dreaming every night which is unusual for me. Also, and this may be way off base, I have developed "gas" - okay - it could be something else but nothing has changed about my diet - just thought I would give some input F 65 30 days

2  Allergies Depression, Anxiety, extreme moodiness This worked great for my allergies and helped me sleep at night. the next day effects of depression, etc. were not worth it. F 35 4 weeks

4  Allergies Grumpy, ringing in the ears. I have tried almost every allergy medicine out there. Nothing seems to work. I started taking Benadryl nightly around 5 yrs ago. When I can sleep for more then 6 hours I take two. It helps some, atleast I am not sneezing constantly when I take it. On a negative note: My ears have been ringing very loudly for the past 4 years. At times so loudly I have to turn the TV all the way up. I have checked with the Dr. and they just tell me to stop taking Bendadryl and give me yet another medicine that does not work. I wish the would make a "non" drowsy Benadryl. F 36 5 years

5  sleep apnea, nasal congestion None so far I have in the past year or so begun to experience sleep apnea, in part because my nasal passages have been swelling when I sleep. On a whim I tried taking 25mg just before going to bed, and it appears to be working wonderfully. I sleep more soundly, but still wake up if necessary (e.g., phone, alarm clock), and I don't have trouble breathing. Because I had already developed problems with dry mouth syndrome, I've been using Biotene mouth wash before going to bed, so I haven't experienced the dry mouth problems that some others have reported. And the mental confusion that some have reported hasn't appeared for me, because (a) I only take it before going to bed, and (b) the better sleep has made me more alert during the day; however, I will be monitoring that potential side effect.  5  Insomnia Drowsiness I've taken it every night since '93 to help me stay asleep. It works great except for an increased tolerance which requires more to work as desired. F 41 13 years

4  Sleep aid/anxiety Dry mouth, drowsiness and fatigue in the morning Occasionally (every other month, for about 4 yrs) I will take 50mg of the dye-free capsules 1 hr b4 I am ready to sleep. It usually takes about 45mins-1hr b4 I am knocked out drowsy. If I drink anything with caffeine b4 or after taking benadryl or if I just ate it is not effective. Its best taken on a somewhat empty stomach. I also do not recommend the New benadryl dissolving strips, they are nasty, they make my tongue numb and its not any faster. Overall, benedryl is effective and reliable to help with sleep just be prepared to be drowsy. And I agree with the other comments that if you do not lay down after taking benadryl and you continue to be active it is not as effective, you wont be as drowsy. I am generally anti-drugs but this does work without any side effects to worry about. Hope this helps! :) M 22 4 years

5  hives makes me very sleepy I've had a problem with hives from any kind of skin stress since I was about 16. Benadryl works great for relieving the hives, but after all these years it still knocks me out cold. F 47 30 years

4  Allergic Reaction/ Hives 1. After 30 mins, very fast heartbeat & feverish 2. Completely pass out after about 45 mins 3. Extreme lethargy and depression the next day - cannot concentrate or function normally I really hate taking Benadryl because I find the side effects really frightening. I once had an allergic reaction at a restaurant and passed out in front my dorm room after taking 50mg of Benadryl. Also, it's very frustrating not being able to accomplish anything the next day. However, Benadryl is the only medicine I know of that can quickly control a severe allergic reaction... F 21

3  Sleep aid Incredibly bad headaches in the morning that last until afternoon. I have not seen this posted by anyone else, so am trying to figure out if it's the Benadryl, which is the only thing I've added. Feels somewhat like a hangover F 50 5 days
