SINGULAIR  (MONTELUKAST SODIUM):  Montelukast is used regularly to prevent the wheezing and shortness of breath caused by asthma and decrease the number of asthma attacks. Montelukast is also used before exercise to prevent breathing problems during exercise (bronchospasm). This medication can help decrease the number of times you need to use your rescue inhaler. This medication is also used to relieve symptoms of hay fever and allergic rhinitis (such as sneezing, stuffy/runny/itchy nose). This medication does not work right away and should not be used to treat sudden asthma attacks or other breathing problems. This drug works by blocking certain natural substances (leukotrienes) that may cause or worsen asthma and allergies. It helps make breathing easier by reducing swelling (inflammation) in the airways.   FDA Approval Date: 1998-02-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Allergies and Asthma Sleep disturbance, vivid dreams, night terrors, anxiety, depression, auditory hallucinations, hair loss, sinus congestion... Neuropsychiatric/mental health side effects do not simply go away once stopping the medication. Stopping and starting the med is not a good idea and there is a long period of withdrawal issues post Montelukast. M 31 17 years

5  Chronic allergies, sinus issues Slight dryness and/or irritation of the back of my throat on occasion. May be allergy rather than med related. This medication has done wonders for me. My allergies greatly reduced and I only need a single mucinex for occasional mild congestion. A cold has gone around our family recently. Previously colds+allergies= awful sinus infections. I don't have one and my cold symptoms are easily managed. It's been night and day and I'm thrilled to be on Singulair. F 30 14 days

5  Chronic sinus infections Mild drowsy? I have small kids, so it's hard to distinguish if it's the meds or life in general... other than that, NOTHING!! :o) I have not enjoyed clear breathing like this in over 4yrs! After two nights of singulair, I felt like a new person. After 6mos of back to back sinus infections, 90days of antibiotics, a CT scan, it amazes me this would be all it would take to feel human again!! Only been on it a week, but I chucked my Afrin!!  4  Asthma / sinus issues Night terrors, insomnia, nightmares/intense dreams. My doctor finally pinpointed my daily subtle breathing related issues to my sinuses rather thang mild asthma. Started motelukast over a year and a half ago now and at first I had terrible nightmares or like semi-awake terrors like someone was in the room and I'd abruptly sit up in a panic. They subsided and only come back if I forget to take my tablet for a few days. Now I do dream a lot more though and the dreams are full on. Haven't noticed any other side effects. I can put up with the sleep disruption/ intense dreams as I can now exercise freely and talk without swallowing all the time! I just make sure i tAke the tablet right before i go to sleep and not 1/2 hour or an hour before bed! Not sure what's going to happen when I come off it when we decide to have children. F 30 1 years

3  Asthma Stomach pains, vivid nightmares, sonic hallucinations. I could always hear music in my head, songs and melodies I had not heard since my childhood and what I would call a sonic hallucination? All of a sudden I could hear voices shouting at me and it actually startled me as if someone had just jumped out at me. The nightmares I experienced also were very vivid. One I remember, I was in a car park and stepped out of my car bare foot onto lots of snakes, but I could really feel the snakes under my feet The worst thing about this drug is the stomach pains it gave me. I went to countless appointments and a specialist who all said different things but assured me it would not be this medication. I decided to take myself of it and voila! No more daily stomach aches. However my asthma has gotten worse. If you don't get any of the huge list of side effects listed in the paperwork included with this medication, it is like a miracle drug. It's just unfortunate for me and it seems many others that the side effects listed are actually much more common than they'd like us to think. Fingers crossed that an alternative is available one day with less side effects. A couple of things to note, Doctors will not buy the fact that this is causing whatever problem you're having, it will change you as a person mentally, I used to be a very chilled person, but even though I no longer take this medicine I am plagued with horrible thoughts of bad things happening to people I love, which I never thought of before, another tip is that this medicine can show incorrect results on liver function tests.  3  asthma increased irritability, anxiety, emotional hypersensitivity, vaginal dryness and most of all...I CANT HAVE AN ORGASM!! I started looking for side effects of this drug due to my sudden sexual issues, and other than my birth control, its the only medication i take. I am a pretty normal female, i don't always have an orgasm with my partner, but i certainly know how to help myself..and suddenly, NOTHING was working. After reading these other comments, i am realizing that my intense mood swings over the past few months may not have been just situational. i mean, i have been argumentative and prone to outbursts like never before. i am rating the drug a 3, because it HAS done wonders for my asthma..i was using my albuteral inhaler at least 5-6 x a day, and with singular, i never need it. However, if i had children, i would never consider it an option, thanks to these posts. And, I cant live without my orgasms, sorry Merk. F 30 6 months

3  Allergies Light headed, "zoned out" I was prescribed Singulair to help combat really bad allergies (very rainy this year, which causes plant population to explode). I notice the first few hours (2-4) I take it I can feel my allergies lessening, but the effectiveness against allergies seems to go down after that. During these first hours I also feel the strongest side-effects, light headed/zoned out, etc. I've only been taking it for a few days now, if the side effects continue to be as strong as they are with the limited benefits vs allergies I'm going to discontinue usage.  2  Son's allergy / asthma We noticed after one day of our son taking Singulair chewable, his attitude has totally changed. He already has ADHD, but this has gotten worse. I have never seen his defiance like this. It's already hard on us with his ADHD, but this Singulair has made it alot worse. I "googled" singulair hyperactivity and this site came up with other parents saying almost the same exact thing. We are going to the doctor's office tomorrow regarding this. We are now at our wits end - do we put up with his defiance or do we stop giving him the meds so he coughs his lungs up?? IDK what to do... :( F 30 5 days

2  asthmatic colds i used this for my 2,3, and 5 year old. extremely aggressive behavior, mood swings, excessive talking, nightmares All 3 of my very well behaved children were put on this. They get colds that move to pnemonia quickly. I must say, they haven't been sick at all since being on medication. They are usually sick every other week. But, they have been fighting with eachother and us (their Mom and Dad) from morning till night. Hitting me, throwing tamtrums, irrational, and moody. They are NEVER and HAVE NEVER BEEN like that. I took them off yesterday and already my 2 year old is smiling again. I am worried about thier colds, but I will have to find something else. F 30 1 months

1  Severe allergies Tremors, fatigue, brain fog, depression, anxiety, HAIR LOSS, auditory hallucinations, sleep disturbances, weird dreams, irritability/aggression, no sex drive I started taking Singulair in conjunction with Allegra due to severe allergies. The first 2 weeks I started taking it, it was great. Took away my nighttime nasal stuffiness, made me sleepy enough to actually fall and stay asleep. My only complaint then was no matter how much I slept at night I always woke up so incredibly fatigued the next day. Over the remaining 2 weeks I have developed all the other symptoms I mentioned above. My anxiety was getting so bad it would wake me up in the middle of the night mid panic attack. I started to hear songs in my head on repeat, some that I had heard recently, some I hadn't heard in years. And no matter what I tried I couldn't get the auditory hallucinations to stop. I became increasingly agitated and irritated, to the point I was kind of afraid to be around my family because I was afraid I would snap on them for no reason. Completely unexplainable stomach pain. Went to my family doctor because I was convinced I had either a UTI or an appendicitis. She ruled out both and said the singular would not cause symptoms like that. Went to my OBGYN and got an ultrasound because I thought I may have had an ovarian cyst, nope. Completely unexplainable stomach pain that bothered me almost 24/7. And right at the month mark of taking this medication my hair started falling out in handfuls and I was afraid to take showers. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICATION. F 30 1 months

1  Allergies and Asthma Gastrointestinal distress daily. Upper respiratory and sinus congestion and mucus. Disturbed sleep patterns with frightening vivid dreams. Mood changes including anxiety and depression. Severe neuropsychiatric adverse reaction - paranoia and severe and chronic auditory hallucinations. Stopped med one year ago and withdrawal period was very difficult. No doctors were of assistance in diagnosing connection to Montelukast. Most side effects decreased or completely resolved within several months of stopping the medication. There is a withdrawal period. Do not stop and start this med! We tapered off slowly. Dangerous medication for adults and children. M 30 20 years
