SINGULAIR  (MONTELUKAST SODIUM):  Montelukast is used regularly to prevent the wheezing and shortness of breath caused by asthma and decrease the number of asthma attacks. Montelukast is also used before exercise to prevent breathing problems during exercise (bronchospasm). This medication can help decrease the number of times you need to use your rescue inhaler. This medication is also used to relieve symptoms of hay fever and allergic rhinitis (such as sneezing, stuffy/runny/itchy nose). This medication does not work right away and should not be used to treat sudden asthma attacks or other breathing problems. This drug works by blocking certain natural substances (leukotrienes) that may cause or worsen asthma and allergies. It helps make breathing easier by reducing swelling (inflammation) in the airways.   FDA Approval Date: 1998-02-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  to control inflammation from asthma insomnia, weight gain, hot flashes although I didn't have any flairups with my asthma, this drug was not worth all the side effects. I gained weight tremendously fast in the belly area. Also under my arms and chest area. I had no idea that it was this drug causing this. F 53 4 months

2  asthma allergies increasing numbness in hands and feet, fasting blood sugar increase of 23 points into the pre-diabetic range [no family history], blood pressure increase, anxiety , slurred speech, headache, preoccupation with health and death, sadness Initially thrilled to be able to breathe through my nose, totally allergy free in high season, ebullient with relief from allergy/asthma symptoms, proclaimed Singulair as the med that changed my life. Now know that the change has been for the worse [except respiratorily], and am stopping it tonight. F 53 3 days

2  Asthma Severe headaches lasting two or more days. Singulair definitely cleared up my asthma symptoms. I did not need an inhaler during the time I was taking it. However, the severe headaches forced me to discontinue taking it and I am now back on Ventolin on a daily basis. M 53 6 months

1  Allergies & Sinus Infections Numbness all over body, especially arms, hands & throat @ night. Dry mouth and difficulty swallowing.Neck pain & stiffness. Chest pain & heart palpitations. Sore burning pain in arms, shoulders & back. Difficulty breathing. Weakness & Fatigue. Lightheaded & Foggy brain. I actually felt like this medication was causing me to have asthma attacks. It did help with my allergies & even my psoriasis. However, I'll deal with any of these symptoms every day of the week before the side effects from this medication. F 53 2 months

1  Severe Allergies & Ear fullness SEVERE TOOTH PAIN/DECAY, GUM ABCESSES, JOINT PAIN, WAKING UP FEELING HUNG OVER/EXHAUSTION I had been taking the generic form called Montelukast. Toward the end of 2018, my pharmacy informed me that they were using a different maker called "CAMBER" & to let them know how it was was working out. They are pink hexagon shaped tablets. After over a month later, I noticed that my molars were hurting. Started out as a deep ache, then turned into swollen gums at the base of the aching tooth. It felt like a raging tooth ache with an abcess. There was a foul discharge when I popped the bubble in the gum line. First my right lower molar, then my left one started to act up. I had zero issues up until shortly after the new generic change. Made an appointment with my dentist, he exrayed my teeth & didn't really note anything serious, other than a slight foggy area at the base. There were no cavities or abcesses. I explained how it was excruciating to bite down or chew, and I couldn't handle the pain anymore. It was the most uncomfortable thing ever. I stopped the medication a month ago and I started to feel better physically. I wasn't waking up feeling hung over, or experiencing joint pain & weakness. My right tooth started to feel better after a few weeks, my left molar seems to be less sensitive. I googled these symptoms, and discovered that they were reported side affects of Singulair. The prior brand of Montelukast did help with my allergies tremendously, however, I did notice the body aches, exhaustion & irritable mood. I didn't coincide this medi F 53 3 years

1  Urticaria/food allergies Developed constant headaches and severe lower abdominal pain the first night of taking. Spent the next three days in bed with abdominal pain, sleeping about 18 hrs a day. Went to urgent care center for the abdominal pain, thinking maybe it was a terrible UTI. Had a UA done - nothing. They had no answers. Day 4 came and I didn't take the meds, started feeling better within hours. The rash, the reason I started taking this drug, Montelukast, got worse in the three days I took it. Seems like I was prescribed this in almost an off label manner for a rash that my allergist thinks might be food related. With the horrid side effects of this, I'd rather live with the rash. 53 3 days

1  seasonal allergies Severe drowsiness, almost falling asleep while driving. Mood shifts, anomie, lack of enthusiasm about life, laziness. It was very hard to attribute this to the drug because it takes a while to start, but it alleviates quickly when drug is stopped. No noticeable relief of allergies: possibly got a bit worse. Stopped taking it a week before the news reports started. I do not think this drug should be widely prescribed. I would never give it to a child too young to express themselves clearly, would monitor carefully for behavior changes over a time frame of weeks, and would avoid starting at the same time as other drugs. None for me thanks. M 53 1 years

1  Allergy problems, sinus I am a glass half full type of person. Within 36 hours of taking this medication I was having very depressing thoughts, by the end of the second day I felt like I was having an out of body, numbness everywhere... terrible side effects. Found this link, read other comments. Stopped about 72 hours ago and returning to normal quickly. It did clear nasal passages but need another solution, the side effects are just too great.  1  Asthma Nightmares, insomnia, depression, weight gain, suicidal thoughts, joint pain. I was perfectly healthy prior to taking this drug. Doc noticed I had a little wheeze and prescribed Singulair. I began to have the dreams, insomnia and depression after the first few days. I told the Doc and he said to go off for 4 days & try again. I started again after 5 days and the insomnia went away but the depression got worse and I began getting pain in my joints. I was always starving and gained weight.Once I began with the suicidal thoughts, that was it. I stopped taking it along with a steroid inhaler I was given. I was on no other drugs. Things got much worse for at least 3 weeks (sores in my nose, unable to breathe, coughing, rashes, swollen painful joints, stomach pain, sore throat)I had blood tests that came back positive for RA. Now, 5 weeks later, it is all slowly getting better. I would never, ever give this to a child and I would never take it again. F 53 20 days

1  pediatric asthma My eight year old daughter - previously a happy, well adjusted girl - became depressed, attempted self mutilation and entertained thoughts of suicide. After taking Singulair myself, I understand what my daughter went through. I wake up every morning with very dark thoughts. It is not depression, just misery. What my daughter went through is shocking. DO NOT ALLOW YOUR CHILDREN TO TAKE SINGULAIR OR ADVAIR. It is not worth the price... F 53 8 months

4  Asthma Outstanding product for me - rarely use rescue inhaler after living on one for 20 years! - maybe very slight depression but not sure if related to Singulair - maybe moody - just me I think! M 52 4 years

3  chronic sinusitis/allergies fatigue, lethargy, muscle weakness I have been taking it for a week at bedtime. It does reduce allergy symptoms but does not work well enough to make up for the drawbacks. Although I yawn quite a bit through the morning, I generally do okay until mid-afternoon, when the real fatigue hits and I have trouble dragging through the rest of the day. This is upsetting because I've always been an active person. I am going to stop taking it as of today because of this. F 52 8 days

2  severe asthma First month-Very bad vivid dreams. Second month-Rash-like hard skin bumps. Third month-cough, flu-like symptoms, nausea, migraine, incontinence, severe muscular pain in back and neck, drop in body temperature that lasted an hour or more in the evening, tiredness, weak muscles. I'm putting down all of my symptoms even they haven't been listed in the usual places in case other people experience the same. It helped my asthma but the symptoms I got from it were much worse. I'm pretty sure that I have an allergy to it because my symptoms became so bad. I finally stopped taking it but I haven't talked with my doctor about it yet. F 52 3 months

2  severe rhinitis, post nasal drip RAPID WEIGHT GAIN, bloated feeling, lethargy, loss of mental clarity, mild or occasionally moderate depression and anxiety. Singulair was prescribed, along with Nassonex (mometasone) to treat severe chronic rhinitis, as an alternative to continual use of pseudephedrine. Things went OK for the first three months, after which I experienced an increase in lethargy, moodiness/mild depression, loss of concentration, moderate anxiety, muscular weakness, and weight gain. I did not notice much relief for the rhinitis (an issue because I cannot mouth-breathe, and end up hypoxic) - in fact, I had to go back to decongestant nasal sprays, most especially at night, and gained more relief from regular twice-daily use of a NeilMed nasal rinse than from SIngulair. More recently, I've had a constant feeling of being bloated, especially in the hands and feet, and mental "fuzziness" similar to that which many people experience with antihistamines. All of these have been increasing. The weight gain was 12 pounds in 4 months. -- Other medications (used for a very long time with excellent result and no side effe M 52 8 months
