4  bipolar 2, anxiety fuzzy memory, dizzy spells, hair loss lamictal helped me feel calmer, respond more rationally and in that regard, think more clearly because i was less reactive. my husband noted "you aren't acting as crazy" ha! during those two plus years, i went to therapy 3x a week to address my underlying childhood trauma responses. bipolar runs in my family, but i felt if i could get all of my ducks in a row, maybe i could be off this medication. i am also on 300mg of wellbutrin and have been for 10 years as it is the most effective medication for my adhd. i decided to go off of the lamictal, tired of thinning hair, tired of not feeling mentally sharp. and i have a lot of other healthy habits in place now that by being on lamictal i was able to implement, like better diet, regular exercise, better friends, better use of my time pursuing my interests, awareness of triggers, good preventative behaviors in place etc. I've been on medications that had stronger withdrawal symptoms in the first week (zoloft and abilify to name a few), but lamictal just won't seem to get out of my system. i went down by 50 for two weeks, then two weeks of 50 every other day, now nothing for two weeks, and I'm still having the spins when I lie down, my thoughts are even foggier than before, major difficulty concentrating. Tingly, itchy head is gone. It feels like a mild vertigo that won't go away. i haven't had any of the reactive behaviors return. i feel a bit more wired with vivid dreams, headaches off and on. it's a lot to manage!  4  Depression, bi-polar II In general I have had very few obvious physical side effects from the medication. I am hyper-sensitive to most pharmaceuticals and this is pretty much the only psych med I have ever tolerated. However it has a mood blunting affect at a higher dose (I was on 200mg for 3 years) and this was apparent to friends and family. 100mg is ok for the most part. One significant down side of this medication is that it has absolutely killed my creative drive and creative expansive mind. I no longer have the ability to fantasize and let my mind wander. It’s a weird effect but a real one. On the flip side, bi-polar is no joke so I pretty much have had to accept that the benefits of staying on a reasonably low dose of this medication outweighs the truly significant creative loss I’ve experienced from it.  4  Anxiety, OCD, and BPD Vivid, disturbing dreams and nightmares, increase in acne, weight loss I really liked Lamictal. It helped with my severe anxiety and panic attacks and obsessive thoughts, and agitation. I'm not sure if it was the placebo effect because it was only a week in and it was such a small dose, but I definitely noticed an improvement. I had to stop it only 10 days in because I noticed it was making my acne worse. It wasn't anywhere as bad as Lithium, but it was still enough to make me feel more insecure. Another side effect was the vivid dreams. I was having extremely vivid, detailed, disturbing nightmares every night. I also experienced weight loss and lack of appetite but this wasn't a dealbreaker for me. The acne and nightmares were however. I really wish I could've kept taking it. F 20 10 days

3  Anxiety Disorder No significant side effects This is the only medication I've taken that hasn't presented any noticeable side effects. It felt genuinely effective for about the first ten months of taking it, but I noticed the dosage gradually increase without any improvement in my mood swings. It was moderately helpful short-term and gentle on the body. F 16 3 years

3  Seizures Doctor had me on 200 mg a day because that's what the PDR said to do. It was way too much. I started having problems with language. All of a sudden I couldn't spell and I would sometimes use the wrong word for objects. I asked my doctor if I could try a lower dose and he said no. This despite the fact that I stopped having seizures once I took the lowest dose that they start you out with when first taking the drug. I live in a State that gives doctor's the ability to yank your driver's license if they think you are a seizure risk. So I started titrating down on my own and didn't tell him. I was extremely cautious, going from 200 to 150 for at least 3 months, then 150 to 100, 100 to 50, then 50 to 25. (I did this by separating the 100 mg pill in 1/2, then 1/2 again). At 25 mg I had a slight "aura" so I went back up to 50 mg. 50 mg seemed to be the correct dose for me. My side effects were greatly reduced and I haven't had a seizures in years. I hate it when doctor's won't listen to their patients. F 45 8 years

3  Epilepsy HAIR LOSS! fatigue, trouble staying asleep at night, balance issues (although this could also be a continuing result of encephalitis) and indigestion. Seems to be controlling my seizures, together with the other medication. Only had one seizure since taking it and that was during the delicate phase of eliminating one med and introducing this. I am concerned about the considerable hairloss and fatigue, though. F 30 4 weeks

3  Mood swings bi polar disorder I ran out of it and became so depressed I couldn't function. Went to ER and the doctor put me right back on it. The doctor that originally prescribed it would not refill despite the fact I had been on it for so many years. Severe withdrawals. F 55 1 years

3  Anxiety I have the feeling like I can't catch my breath at times. This gets worse when I'm in bed ( while going to sleep and waking up). My doc says it's anxiety, so I take 50 mg of hydroxyzine when I get the feeling like I can't breathe and have an elephant on my chest. It has helped my anxiety and racing thoughts, but feeling like I can't breathe is scary at times. I don't know if this odd side effect is worth the benefits received from this med. F 33 1 months

3  Epilepsy When I first Started taking this medication I became very Moody. I expressed to my doctor I thought that it was from medication but was told it was probably depression from my recent diagnosis of epilepsy. I was put on antidepressants but because this anti-depressant can cause seizures they increased my lamictal. I have headaches, very blurry vision, extreme irritability and rage, stomach pain and memory loss. Can't find words or mix up what I'm saying. Very confused. Itchy. After starting increase 1 month ago, I've been crying, yelling at my boyfriend over nothing, social phobic, and can't retain information. Made the connection finally. I reviewed by medical records and found that I had been telling my doctor for almost a year-and a half that I believed it was this medication. They convinced me it was side effects from the seizures but I know better. My Dr agreed it makes sense with the increased dosage and increased symptoms i need to stop this med. Did help with seizure control F 46 15 months

3  Bipolar 2 While taking this drug at night i had extreme insomnia. I actually stayed up for 6 nights and days. I was so manic and my head raced so much i felt crazy! After taking it at night along with Zeprexa i was able to sleep again. Nowdays, my sleep pattern has stabilized but now i have extreme agitation, especially after my dose in the morning. My dose is 200 mg a day. The only thing good about this drug is weight loss. F 61 1 years

3  Depression Severe memory loss, spelling difficulties, reading difficulties, confusion, acne, blurry vision. I experienced no side effects in the first year or so of taking Lamictal, but then in the last couple of years the cognitive problems have slowly gotten worse. I routinely forget conversations I've had, go into rooms many times a day and forget why, have trouble spelling and understanding simple concepts. I often feel confused and out of it. It is a nightmare and I am currently coming off the medication because of these issues. I know not everyone experiences these issues, but for me they are severe. Would love to hear from anyone also experiencing these types of difficulties. Will leave my email. F 4.5 years
