It came out of the blue, no warning signs, no gradual onset, just instantly after taking 40mg one morning. 9 months after discontinuation and it is still going strong. Every single night I have insomnia. I cannot stay asleep for more than two-three hours. It has spread to my heart, abdomen. Sometimes I don't sleep. My cognitive abilities have significantly decreased: I can no longer do research or play chess. 2 months after discontinuation, 6 dents formed on skull, and are still there. 3 months later, I started having dry eyes. Now I am developing further neuropsychiatric symptoms, including depression, moods swings, mania, migraines.. also muscle weakness, acne, oily skin, worsened my preexisting photophobia. While on the drug, I had suicidical ideation and felt I lost my personality for a full 5 days. | This drug is extremely dangerous and doctors prescribe it in the most irresponsible way. The side effects that are usually mentioned (fluid retention, osteoporosis) hide much more severe side effects that can permanently damage your brain (as supported by the scientific literature, which my prescribing doctors failed to warn me about). Even if you don't develop side effects on the drug, you can develop serious ones months later. DO NOT TAKE THIS DRUG unless you are in a life-threatening situation, no matter what dose your doctor give. Even then, I would rather die. Where it is called prednisolone. I think steroids should be a black box drug for sure. They can be a very dangerous drug to some. And no professional warned of any of the possible side affects. And when reporting them, I felt gaslighted. So gave up telling them, and tapered myself off..yes it was the only drug used for GCA initially, but no info from rheumatology etc on the toxic side affects. The doctor warned me about none of the side effects, and neither did the pharmacist. This drug has ruined my life. I have no idea when this will get better. The doctors ignore me, even though I have clear test results. This should never be given for something like a "possible" tooth infection. I am a full time college student, a mom, and I've had to quit my job and move in with my parents because I can't work due to the panic attacks and other issues it's given me. I'm been given no information by doctors on when it will end or how to get better. All I've been told is that it may go away in "up to a year". I had no previous history of any of these issues before taking this drug. Currently I've changed my diet, hydrate, try to workout, and just trying to make it through this. Everyday is a challenge. It should be illegal to prescribe this drug without prior knowledge of the possibility of living this way with doctors having no idea about the possible effects or how to treat them. I feel so defeated. This is effecting every area of my life. I was prescribed prednisone for three months last year as I had back pain from a previous back surgery and then I contracted covid and I was given more prednisone. Two and half months ago I started having pain in my left groin, my doctored thought maybe torn tendon and or labrum tear. After weeks and months of rest I was no better. After X-rays and a final MRI last week, I was informed that I have bilateral AVNs, the head on femoral hip bones have fractured and crumbled. They call this AVN or avascular necrosis, meaning my bone has died. Next week I am having my left hip replaced and then four weeks after my right hip replaced. I am only 40yrs old.
