| 2 | Hypertension | Persistent cough was my biggest problem. After each episode of cold or flu, the coughing would go on for 6+ weeks. This last time the coughing was so violent it often led to vomiting and I also must have cracked or bruised a rib. I carried something to drink with me constantly and hauled around a sack of cough drops. Night coughing kept me up all night. My quality of life really suffered. I finally connected the dots after seenig the info. on a website (the two doctors I consulted did not have a clue, one of them prescribed this med to me) and asked to switch off to Norvasc. A huge double-blind study (called HOPE study) found recently that, even including people without BP problems or other heart risk factors, Altace (ramipril) lowered risk of FIRST heart attack by 38%!!!!! It is postulated that other ACE inhibitors may have similar effect, but this is only one that has actually been tested. If you want this good "side effect", I wouldn't take anything but ramipril. When you hear the term 'evidence-based medicine'use, Ramipril's proven ability is an example, as opposed to using other ACE inhibitors and guessing they will act like ramipril. | M | 53 | 2 months | 10/28/2005 | 3 | High Blood Pressure | I used to have tingings feeling at my joints, but that went after a month of taking it. The other main one that I have noticed is that I had let my prescription run out by accident and had to wait on the mail order script to get here during this time off of the medication not only did I have more erections than I had had over the last 12 months in the 5 days I have been off of Altace but I had developed chronic knee pain over the last year or so while taking Altace my doctor said it was just arthritis setting in but during this time of being off of the medication my knees actually started feeling better and not hurting as they have over the last 12 months or so. Clearly there is a connection between not only the Sexual drive with this medication but also the severe knee pain I have been suffering with. Needless to say I am not starting the Altace back up as I am going back to my doctor to demand something different for my High Blood pressure that hopefully does not have these kind of side effects. The rash became evident after taking Altace for approximately 2 weeks. After 6 weeks I realized that the hair on my head was starting to fall out, and I had lost most of the hair off of my arms and legs. On the bright side, I didn't have to shave as often! After decreasing dosage to 5 mg daily these side effects seem to have gone away. Rash has disappeared, and hair is thickening again. | Started Altace at 5 mg daily, which lowered BP to around 140/80. Increased dosage to 10 mg, which lowered BP to around 135/80. However the side effects kicked in. Doc reduced dosage and problems went away. By itself Altace doesn't totally control my BP. Must take it in combination with something else. Combining with 10 mg HCTZ was VERY effective. Reduced BP to 110/70.
