It lowers my blood pressure from 180 to 135, but I my dry cough is very bad, so I have to take medication for cough. The Oximeter showed my oxygen saturation initially going down to about 95/97 later it got worse to a point that unless I took very deep breaths the oxygen saturation would keep falling and the heart would respond by increasing the frequency of the beat. It was difficult to convince the physicians that my oxygen saturation was falling as while active it would go to about 97. The moment I snoozed it would start dropping. On three occassions it went to 81%. My HR shot up to 130. This is when I insisted on stopping and going on another drug. Within 24 hours my oxygen saturation returned to normal of 98%. | It turned out to be great in the beginning but could turn out to be extremely dangerous especially if one was taking some sleep medication. This conclusion is based only on my own experience. The cardiologist initially refuted my arguement as it is not mentioned in the literature but believed me when it became very obvious with sharp falls in oxygen saturation. I have been off of this medication two days now and I am still coughing and gagging on what seems to be phlegm. The ONLY remedy, is a Guaifanesin-based expectorant. If you are, or were a former smoker - forget about this drug. You will be constantly clearing your throat, every 2-5 minutes. And, I don't mean by a subtle, "ahem" either. It's more like a loud, forceful, "grrrrr!" This annoying "habit" is simply not acceptable in public engagements like Seminars, Movies or Libraries. My BP was not lowered enough and required an additional medication(Norvasc) to get my levels down. After the first couple of days when my body was adjusting to the medication all side effects went away but after 6 weeks, I woke up one morning and was dizzy. It did not go away and so I went to see my Dr. He prescribe some antibiotics and then something else thinking it was just an inner ear infection but it did not go away. Went for MRI and it came back clean (thank God!!). After that, my Dr. was willing to believe me that it was the Enalapril and it was not going to go away so we changed to 25mg of Losartan. TBD on how this goes. | Let me start by saying that I am one of those that somehow got bad genes when it comes to BP. I am not overweight, 148 pounds, and run 30-40 miles a week. Eating right does not help my BP either. I was actually taking 10mg in the morning and 5mg at night but there was no way to enter this. The Enalapril controlled my BP great!! Without medicine, I am 150/100 person and it took me to 118/72 or lower. I really wish I had not developed the dizziness b/c this medicine was doing really well for me. I would recommend it for sure. Also, we have to keep in mind that the majority of people who rate the medicine on the web are the people who are having side effects. My heart would beat normally and then I would get a POUNDING heartbeat (of one) and then it would return back to normal. I also would get shortness of breath and fatigue. VASOTEC (ENALAPRIL MALEATE): Enalapril is used to treat high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. It is also used to treat heart failure and to help prevent people with a certain heart problem (left ventricular dysfunction) from developing heart failure. Enalapril belongs to a class of drugs known as ACE inhibitors. It works by relaxing blood vessels so blood can flow more easily.
