SYNTHROID  (LEVOTHYROXINE SODIUM):  Levothyroxine is used to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). It replaces or provides more thyroid hormone, which is normally produced by the thyroid gland. Low thyroid hormone levels can occur naturally or when the thyroid gland is injured by radiation/medications or removed by surgery. Having enough thyroid hormone is important for maintaining normal mental and physical activity. In children, having enough thyroid hormone is important for normal mental and physical development. This medication is also used to treat other types of thyroid disorders (such as certain types of goiters, thyroid cancer). This medication should not be used to treat infertility unless it is caused by low thyroid hormone levels.   FDA Approval Date: 2002-07-24 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Hashimotos Red eyes, migraine headaches, heart palpitations, strange sensation of head being disconnected from the rest of my body. Constant congestion. Body wide pain. Elevated blood pressure. Did I mention pain all over? Fought many times over the years to be OFF synthroid, but through one weird circumstance or another(doc refused armour, armour stopped production for awhile, went on cytomel, need t4 so add synthroid, get new doc who lets me take armour, new doc died, another new doc insisted I try synthroid again, almost died!) I would be forced into taking this crap excuse for medicine. Last time I took it I ended up in the hospital. I took myself off of it for close to 3 years and I never felt better! But unfortunately my tsh was 94.0 when I went to the doc and he said he couldn't keep me as a patient if I refused treatment(understandably) so I said I would only take armour. Been doing pretty good. I have none of the side effects I did on synthroid though. Sadly, doctors have a hard time accepting this medicine causes all that it did in my life. They push it like its the best, but not everybody is the same and this is a perfect example of why. My health was much better OFF of it than it ever was on it. F 45 6 years

1  Hashimoto's and hypothyroidism I didn't think I would be one of the many people online who hate this drug, and yet here I am. My TSH was on the upper end of normal so my doctor recommended I try Synthroid to see if it would help my awful symptoms from Hashimotos. I have no side effects from Synthroid except two: unbearable, debilitating fatigue and weight gain. I exercise constantly, track my calories and eat healthy. My weight was the same for 1 year before Synthroid. After Synthroid, I immediately gained 5 lbs. I have to sleep all day, 24/7. It's like being on sleeping pills. I told my doctor and she said "that's unusual." It really feels like doctors don't care about our well-being at all. I can't wait to get off this medication, but for some people, they can't. There needs to be a better way to deal with our thyroid issues than apathetic doctors and this ridiculous drug. F 34 6 months

1  Hypothyroid after Graves' Disease Not the first time I've been on it...I haven't done well with Synthroid since the manufacturer changed in back in 1982-83. Since then I always get too nervous while on it, can't sleep right, tend to get chest pains on left even if dose is supposedly OK by labs...yet, I have a lot of low-thyroid symptoms that never resolve, either. Messes up my breathing, too, and energy level is never good on it...have tried so many other drugs & doses over the years...only Old Synthroid version really helped me. I still wish they would bring back a version of Synthroid that is closer to what they made in 1982-83, when they changed a couple of "inactive" ingredients on it, the assaying method used, and possibly where they got the raw materials from. I haven't had a good quality of life at all, since they changed this drug--I am out of new drug options to take...been on so many, over the years--natural ones, Tirosint, combining synthetic with T-3, back on Synthroid here and there...different generics and brands....I'm sick of it. Some of us need more options, and I wish I had a good one, now. Working on petition to get better treatment for thyroid patients--in memory of my brother Jordan, a Hashimoto's patient who also couldn't get the help he needed.  1  Hashimotos At first it seemed to work. Had more energy no brain fog. Then after the dr upped my dosage I began having heart palpitations chest pain high blood pressure anxiety leg cramps and pain. Couldn't sleep at night headaches vision changes and so much more. My dr only believes in synthroid. Thinking about changing drs. I've read many articles and patient stories on this drug. Felt better off the drug than on it. F 47 8 months

1  Hashimotos Even on a low dose 25 mcg I had jitters HR 90s palpitations and migraines with tinnitus. I need 75 mcg to take the TSH down to normal. Levothyroxine generic wasnt as bad even if its supposed to be the same T4 med. I switched to Armour Thyroid with far better results. F 65 1 years

1  Hashimotos My symptoms never improved and I gained 30 lbs within 7-8 months of starting it. Also, my face had continued to blow up like a balloon. I looked like a chipmunk when I smiled. Last but not least, I couldn't lose any weight, even though I went gluten free, ate fresh fruits & vegetables, and walked/ran 3 miles daily. After being off synthroid for 10 days (my own doing, not my dr) before starting Armour thyroid, my face already looked like I had lost 10 lbs. After a week of eating more food than I normally would have consumed, though still not overeating, I lost 1.2 lbs without even being on the treadmill. So, while some may do great on it, some don't. Ask for Armour thyroid if synthroid doesn't work. It has T3 and T4 whereas synthroid only has T4. F 41 3 years

1  synthroid extreme hypothyroidism I see the dates of these comments were when synthroid was a GREAT PRODUCT AND ABBOTT WAS STILL HERE IN THE US. But now FDA HAS TAKEN THYROID HORMONE OUT OF SYNTHROID AND ALLOWED DRUG COMPANIES TO CONVERT IT INTO GENERIC. THEY CALL IT BIOEQUIVELANT SYNTHROID. PHOOEY! THE DRUG SUCKS NOW! WE HAVE TO TELL THE FDA TO PUT BACK 90 TO 110 PERCENT THYROID F 48 27 years

1  Hashimotos Daily uterine cramping, 60 lb weight gain, exhaustion, extreme mood swings, body odor, depression, suicidal thoughts, night sweats, hip pain, & insomnia. 95% worse on meds than I was with 46 tsh. Symptoms stopped 1 week after stopping synthroid. Currently taking Nature Thyroid. Much better except daily cramps & night sweats are still present. Can't find dr who will make any effort to figure this out. Wondering if the meds are elevating my estrogen levels. Trying to conceive for 2.5 years. F 36 6 months

1  underactive thyroid Well at first i gained a lot of weight (70-80 pounds),had sisnus problems, headaches, loss of sex drive, no appetite numbers still not right and just the feeling of being miserable and depressed and twice my age. Then 3yrs later with my numbers still way off they decided to raised my doseage and when they done that my symptoms had gotten worse. Bad anxity, anxiousness, headaches, reallyenergized, chest tightness, heart palpations, sinus problems, nervousness, real jittery, loss of sex drive, no appetite feeling depressed and my thyroid glands are very swollen now. I started taking levo. 88mcg (which is generic for sythroid ) in 2012 for about a year and it wasn't working.so they had me switch to the name brand sythroid 88mcg and it didn't do much better I had gained about 70-80 pounds had bad headaches/sisnus problems, loss of appetite, no sex drive and my numbers didn't get any better. So here we are 21/2 yrs.later nov.2015 almost 2016 From first starting on sythroid in 2013 they changed me to 100mcg I gained like 7 more pounds in a 6wks time frame and my numbers went up again way above average and my thyroid glands is also swollen so they decided to up my dose to 112mcg in feb.2016 and they also did an ultrasound on my neck and im waiting on the results for that. But while I'm waiting ive started on this higher dose of sythroid 112mcg and im havin more symptoms on top of the ones I was already having so now not only am I having the headaches, sinus problems, loss of sex drive, weight gain, no appetite depressed, numbers still high, swollen thyroid glands etc... but iam also now having bad anxity, anxiousness, heart palpations, nervousness, energized, chest tightness and real gittery and worrisome. I just want this problem fixed and I don't think Synthroid is gonna do it. It hasn't yet and it's been 3yrs since starting it and All its done is cause me more problems on top of the ones I already had. I want to stop taking this medicne but at the same time I'm scared to just stop so I feel stuck and don't no what to do. F 40 3 years
