| 4 | bulging disk,chronic shoulder pain | 1st month I slept 12-16 hours a day | My pain doc added this on to my oxycodone/soma/celebrex/flector patch cocktail because my pain was still so bad i couldn't sleep, even with a scrip sleep aid. 1st few weeks, all i did was sleep, but then i adjusted to it. I quit it cold-turkey after ~3 months. No side effects of quitting it, to my (and my doctor's) surprise! I now take it infrequently for really bad days. I have finally gotten some significant relief thru traction treatment. I've tried every other treatment out there, short of surgery (Im not a 'surgical patient'). I have to really concentrate on having regular elimination, and to insure that I do, I must take stool softeners and laxatives. I still anticipate bleeding and pain with bowel movements. When I had morphine IV in the hospital, I also developed an enormous paralytic ileus. It was worse than the surgical pain, by far. And, I had migraine headaches in the beginning of my Kadian therapy but they have abated. I don't "feel" any different when I take the Kadian, like high or lightheaded, but I have an overall sense of being sick. If I have to choose between Kadian and patches, I choose Kadian only because I need to float in water to totally stop the pain in my back. I can't be in water with the patch, simple as that. Otherwise I'd still be on the patches. | I was on Fentanyl patches for many years, and worked my way up to 75 mg. every three days . Finally, I complained about the inability to swim or shower without the patch falling off, regardless of the glues and plastic covers I used. So, doctor put me on Kadian, even though I was morphine intolerant, by my own admission. He told me there was no substitute for the patch, other than morphine. At the end of my rope, I was determined to make the Kadian work. It took several months for the headaches to stop, and the constipation is an ongoing problem. I also need a C-PAP now because the medication has given me sleep apnea.(respiratory depression) All in all, morphine is an icky drug, it has no redeeming value whatsoever except for it's pain relief. Anything that relieves my pain is worth the effort and additional suffering I go through with the Kadian. I can't say it works any better or worse than the patches. I take 50 mg twice a day.
