FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteopenia I already have fibromyalgia....a painful muscular conditon but boy oh boy I had no idea what pain was. I was taking the once a week dose and after a few weeks experienced severe flu-like symptoms with pain in all areas of my body...chronic and severe head pain, upper back pain, motor weakness, dizziness, generalized soreness requiring narcotics for pain relief. Cannot exercise as I was doing before. Difficulty lifing a gallon of milk, sleep disturbance and on and on. I just hope that discontinuing this drug will get me back to where I was. I will manage the bone loss with aeorbic exercise, calcium and weight training if I can ever get over this hideous set complex of symptoms. F 45 3 days

1  osteopenia On a scale 1-10 my shoulder and left arm below the shoulder is unbearable pain. It felt like someone pulled the muscle away from the bone or a horse kicked me. I lost all strength in my left arm. I have to use my right hand/arm to move the left. I had damaged my left shoulder (rotator cuff) a few years ago and with a short period of Celebrex and Ultraset was able to heal the problem with only a flare up once in awhile when I would over use the shoulder. I began taking Fosamax in August, my left shoulder flared up again and the pain has been unbearable and my muscle tone in that arm has diminish significantly (from use 40 pounds weight to no weight, just the movement of the exercise machine). I too felt like I was very old and at 59 felt things looked bleak to maintain my home, be athletic, pick up grandkids...The Celebrix and Ultraset doesn't give me the relief it did before Fosamax. And I will be seeking a new doctor, one that won't be pushing meds. He had me on HRT and nearing 2 years I had bleeding and had endured 6 months of bloating and discomfort. After I had the bleeding, I immediately grabbed my Progestrone and slathered that, threw away the HRT and within a day the bloating and pain went away. Now the Fosamax which has diminished my quality of life will be gone. I plead that it has not damaged my body and I'm upset that I let the doctor make me feel like I am a jerk for not running and buying drugs that I don't think I should be taking. I'm 59, I bike 20 miles on a trail each Monday, Hike in trails 4 days a week, maintain a sculpted yard, golf, 3 times a week do weights at a health club. I plan on reading the Gillian Sanson book, I F 59 5 months

1   Change in bowel habits, and after 6 months ulcer symptoms. Actonel was worse! I was fortunate enough to find Gillian Sanson's book: The Myth of Osteoporosis, What Every Woman Should Know About Creating Bone Health. Please see:www.gilliansanson.com. These drugs have a half-life. We do NOT know the long term effects of taking them. More importantly, are they doing harm, and will they PREVENT fracture? I think NOT! M 6 months

2  Low Bone Density Back and neck flammation and pain and right arm and hand pain with cramps. Although I've had previous neck problems, I never experienced back and arm pain. After reading other comments and concerns about fosamax, I believe the FDA needs to re-evaluate the effectiveness of this drug. Also, my doctor won't re-check my bone density for another year. Therefore, I don't know at this point if the drug is even working! F 47 1 years

1  OSTEOPENIA REFLUX, PAIN IN CHEST, SORE THROAT, PAIN IN HIPS WHEN GET UP; FLU LIKE SYMPTOMS; ANXIETY RELATED TO CHEST PAIN AND ESOPHOGEAL CONSTRICTION I HAD A HYSTERECTOMY AT AGE 40 AND TOOK PREMARIN UNTIL A YEAR AGO. MY DOCTOR TOOK ME OFF THE PREMARIN AND PUT ME ON 35 MG FOSAMAX AS A PREVENTIVE TO BONE LOSS. I BLAMED SOME OF THE SIDE EFFECTS ON THE REMOVAL OF THE PREMARIN. A COUPLE MONTHS AGO I SAW MY DOCTOR WITH SEVERE STOMACH PAINS AND WAS TAKEN OFF FOSAMAX. EVERYTHING GOT BETTER AND I REALIZED HOW MUCH IT HAD AFFECTED ME. NOW HE WANTS ME TO GO BACK ON IT AND I WON'T. F 55 18 months

2  low bone density I have been on fosamax for a year and have been recently suffering from extream low back pain, stiffness, leg weakness, and tingling. I also feel flu like and as if someone slamed into my back. I have had this condition for 2 months and just went on this site and I stopping fosomax. I had an mri which showed some slight disc protusion but the neurosurgon said this is not what is causing my pain and that it is muscular. I have gone though hell with the pain and my doctors think it is not related to fosomax but can not give me an answer as to why I have this pain, stiffness and weakness. I will find another way to improve my bone density. I wonder if we'll be reading about Fosomax as the next drug pulled off the shelves. F 43 1 years

2  osteopenia and osteoporosis In addition to lower back pain and muscle weakness in legs, I have noticed recently that I have developed bony growths in my fingers. Also I developed something in my mouth called Torus Mandibularis, which is a bony growth in my lower jaw. I'm just wondering if these bony growths have been caused by the FOSAMAX, since Fosamax encourages new bone growth. Reading all the reactions from people on this site, makes me scared to continue using this drug. I have had some minor improvement in my bone scan, but I wonder what the long term side effects are that are yet undiscovered. I wonder if anyone else has had bony growths on their hands or inside their mouths? F 56 17 months

I though...yeey! this is working! Than 2 years later my score was -1.9. I was very dissapointed and have stopped the drug (especialy since Vioxx suddenly was taken of the market) who knows in a few years they will find out Fosamax is doing major damage to one's body. Especially after reading all these comments .... F 53 3 days

2  osteoporosis I started taking Fosamax at 38years, I am now 50 through all of this time I have suffered in silence with shocking joint and muscle pain. For whatever reason today 12 years later have searched the side effects and read other postings. I burst into tears and as I type this I am crying. I think out of relief that I my not be as old as I feel. I will stop taking this drug imediately. I am so sore all the time, and I do believe that I have the same pain as all you others. I will take my chances with my bones. Thank-you all for your input, if it wasnt for you all I may still be suffering. I see a bright future for me now. F 50 12 years

2  Osteopenia Progressive sciatic pain eventually demonstrated by MRI to be a large mucoïd cyst... wich by orthopedists point of view had probably bin there for a long time... Why had it become sudenly so symptomatic?? under Fosamax I blamed it on every thing except the medication. After 3 steroïd infiltrations of the cyst, I am doing farely well but seam to have a recurence of the pain with one Actonel. It is only a suspicion but maybe these drugs by working on bones in the area caused the cyst to be blocked... it is my understanding that the fluid in the cyst could ciculate until perhaps it was entrapped causing great pressure on the nerve.
