FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteoporis I was prescribed taking a pill each morning - with full glass of water and not eating for 1 hour. within a week I started getting severe esphogas (sp) burning pain. When I called my Dr. He said to stop immediately. When I had another bone density test I asked the technician if other people complained of burning down their esphogas - he said many. I would never take it again and also read that the bone density advantage even after several years was not statistically significant. I think this is a dangerous drug and also very expensive - I think we'll see this taken off the market too or should but if you don't die from it probably won't be withdrawn unless lots more negative publicity.  3  osteopenia I have been taking Fosamax for about 1 1/2 years for my osteopenia, which I was shocked to hear that I had, as I had no symptoms. At my last checkup, I was told the good news that my bone density had improved, and my spine compressions had decreased. When I first began taking Fosamax, the only side effect I noticed was that sometimes I would have slight reflux. However, for about the last six months, pain in my shoulders and arms has increased so much that, at times, I can barely raise my arms over my head without moaning. I have also noticed severe stiffness in my hips, knees, and legs in the mornings or if I sit for a long period of time. The only medications I take are Fosamax once per week and occassionally an antihistamine or ibuprofen. The only daily supplements I take are calcium and a vitamin. I'm wondering what to do; I guess I'll call my doctor and report my symptoms and see what his recommendations are. Ugh! I've been taking Fosamax for about 1 1/2 years. F 49

3  Bone Loss Severe knee joint aches and stiffness. Back stiffness and back pain It has helped increase bone density, however I have recently had terrible knee pain and have a hard time getting up and walking after sitting for awhile. My legs feel heavy and stiff until I walk for a few minutes. My skin gets very itchy sometimes for no apparent reason. I stopped taking it for three weeks and those symtoms have disappeared.  1  slight bone loss SEVERE muscle & joint pain Within 24 hours of once-a-week dose I felt like I had been beaten with a stick! Every muscle ached and joints gave sharp snaps, crackles & pops. Within 30 hours my sternum(breastbone)ached and the penny dropped - it had to be the drug. Tops of shoulders and upper back & spine where first to be assulted, then sternum, followed by mid-spine and shoulder blades. Couldn't sleep first night due to crackling joints & pain. At 36 hours pain moved to ankles, toes & soles of feet. Dosed 6 AM Saturday, it's now 3 PM Thursday...all muscles feel like the day after a too strenuous work out, and bottom of heels are still painful & walking is agony. Per Dr. DO NOT TAKE SECOND DOSE, call next week(or when I feel normal again)and she will consider another medication. This drug is a lawsuit waiting to happen. F 52 1 times

3  osteopenia Having seen this site I'm now wondering if the tiredness (ever present) and the problem with my eyes ( no tears now) is due to taking this drug for the last 8 months.Ialso get lots of pain in my wrist but put that down to a break I had last year- perhaps not! Anyone else had eye problems? I've never had them before - I feel so fed up most days - not the girl I was!! F 62 8 months

1  osteopenia I'm a 43 yr. old female with MS, colon problems and osteopenia. I was prescribed fosamax due to steroid use and low bone density results. I have NEVER had such severe muscle and joint pain after 4 mos. of use. I was able to walk (with little help) now I use my walker and scooter. But, it's not the MS, it must be the fosamax. I will stop to see if it changes. God Bless all who wrote, I thought I was going crazy and my ms worsening, that's scarey!!!!!!!!!!!! hip pain, arm pain, knee pain and innability to get up on my own or to change sleep positions in bed. It's not worth it to me. Quality of life is! F 43 4 months

2  OSTEOPENIA Terrible swelling in my ankles, so severe that I can not get my shoes on. Painful joints and aching muscles, feeling ill & in pain, very tired all of the time, lower back pain. I am going to the doctor in a few days and will ask her to take me off of it. My diuretic is not working at all and I am very concerned that fluid in building up around my heart like my ankles. I really need to take this medication because of my family history but I just can't go on feeling terrible. I used to go to the gym 5 days a week, now I can't go at all. I have not a bone density test this year but am scheduled for one. F 50 365 days

2  osteopenia I have taken Fosamax for 5 weeks. I have not had any adverse reactions until last week while on vacation in Italy. I suspected that the red itchy spots on my face and neck were insect bites. But I only got a new one each day. But now I am home and got a new one on my leg. Could this be skin problem be a reaction to Fosamax? F 58 5 weeks

1  doctor said I need it for osteoporo Terrible heartburn, got stomach health back with chamomille tea. Presently trying to counteract neck and shoulder pain (which I never had before) with exercise. Pervading head aches slowly going away after stopping to take fosamax (against doctor's orders. Well, he doesn't live in my body, so.) Marcelle Pick M.D. states in her article "Osteoporisis and Fosamax": "The inflammatory nature of bisphosphonates makes sense when you think that this is a class of drug in the same family as cleansing powders."  3  Ulcerative Colitis None, but taking 5mg daily, and it's hard work taking it properly every day, alongside my other meds (that I have to take with food) - getting ready for work now takes about 2 hours instead of the usual 40 minutes. Sigh! No more lie-ins! I take Fosamax every time I'm on steroids for my ulcerative colitis (quite often recently!) Obviously, haven't noticed any difference (DEXA was OK) but it's nice to look to the future and know I'm doing something to avoid yet more health problems! F 23 4 years

1  Osteoporosis During the 6 weeks I took Fosamax: Dizziness, visual aura and blurriness, migraines (my first), joint pain in thumbs, anxiety, episodes of malaise, facial flushing and appetite loss, plus sleep disturbance. Most resolved the first week without Fosamax. Not worth the loss of quality of life to me. I'll do more exercise and calcium. F 56 6 weeks
