After I started taking Claritin 24 hr, I stated to experience increased anxiety and even nightmares, I couldn't understand why. I also started to experience depression. I didn't feel like doing anything, I couldn't get my self motivated. I was irritable and angry. I stopped taking the Claritin and after a few days, I am back to my normal self. I am not sure if this is the case if you have no history of anxiety and or depression. Not that I don't believe them, but I have been taking Claritin since I was a little kid, same with my whole family, and we never had side effects. The only effect has been near-immediate relief! I took the generic Target brand claritin (active ingredient loratadine) for about 3 weeks. My allergy symptoms were much improved but I did have dry nasal passages. After about a week and a half I noticed that things were smelling and tasting very odd. The perfume I'd worn for years smelled like chemicals, my body odors were altered (urine, feces, sweat, etc), food was tasting different and smelling different. I love cooking and eating but the smell of food cooking made me queasy, frying onions and garlic was my favorite but it became awful to smell. I knew my bottle of perfume wasn't the issue as it wasn't a new bottle so it could no have been an altered formula. My husband noted no difference in how things were smelling. After about 2.5 weeks of this I finally started getting concerned and started researching anything that I'd done different or new. I finally came across information related to loratadine changing sense of smell/taste and immediately stopped taking it. I waited a few more weeks with no change and continued to experience altered smell and taste. I finally went to an ENT after about 8 weeks of this. The ENT had no significant concerns at my appointment but we followed up with a message and he is now recommending I have an MRI of my brain. After reading other peoples reviews I'm unsure if I should have the MRI because it is a LOT of money and may result in noth | F | 28 | 22 days 1X day | 5/11/2017 | 4 | Hives / Cold Urticaria | I have always had an allergy to the cold (yes this exist) and i develop hives when i am exposed to cold weather for a long time. The doc said at first it was allergy to detergent, but allergist told me it was the cold. I have been on Claritin for about a month and it's worked. I still get some deep red spots, but they go away very quickly. | Urticara has to do with my body cooling down quickly and the release of histamine. Claritin acts as a histamine blocker. No more hives and I only need to take it when the weather is below 35 (lucky me I live in Chicago). I plan to stop taking it once spring hits and see how I feel. Wow I finally made the connection to the SEVERE MOOD SWINGS I have been having. Normally I am a pretty low-key and easy going guy. It was a wakeup call. It was as if everything was normal... | A Dr. prescribed Zyrtec for me, but after two weeks I became depressed, edgy, irritable, and joyless. I did a med look up on Google and determined that it was the Zyrtec that was causing this, so I quit. I started in on Claritin as it is now available over the counter. When taken intermittently over the last two years, it helped my now-and-then allergies very effectively . When taken consistently, as prescribed, I suffered bad side effects -- much worse than I'd care for. I am stopping Claritin- not worth the side effects. | It does initially work well for stopping extremely bad allergies- I'm not usually bothered but the east coast this spring left me with breathing issues starting in April, so I started Claritin to continue the outdoor sports and activities that I enjoy. I do think some of the effect is cumulative and am hoping that this will start to work itself out of my system, but expect it may take some time. I won't take the chance again, however, with Claritin, as I really think the side effects I'm experiencing are directly linked to this medication. I recently had to change my primary care physician due to insurance changes, and she did not take my change of energy that seriously, but I don't think is aware of how drastic a difference this has been for me. I will re alert the practice to the fact I due feel this is an issue specifically with Claritin. The dehydration can be headed off by drinking a lot of water, and the other side effects are mild and a small price to pay for not having to be itchy all day.
