3  Oesophagitis Fatigue; night sweats; headache Zantac certainly eased my oesophagtis but the side effects were unpleasant (see above). My real cure involved (a) losing some weight; (b) laying off fatty food, coffee, acidic food etc. As is so often the case, treating your own body more kindly is the right way forward.I was just being lazy. Drugs lead to more drugs. The ones you get from the doctor are just the same as the ones that junkies buy from the street corner. I feel bad that I thought there was a quick fix. There isn't. I needed to lose weight and eat better. M 54 14 days

1  GERD Muscular pain, anxiety, changes in blood pressure, bowel irregularity I think over time my liver could not process the drug fast enough. I could not figure what was making me feel so poorly. I decided to stop the drug and treat my gerd some other way. I have to tell you; I feel great for the first time in a long time. M 54 2 years

1  stomach acid I became dependent on the drug. See below. I also may have had trouble absorbing calcium and b vitamins. Ranitidine and other H2 blockers, as well as proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole, are addictive according to a New York Times article in 2013. After doing some internet research following that article, I learned that the body, in its attempt to create enough acid to digest food, counteracts the acid inhibiting effects of these drugs by creating more acid receptors that create more acid, albeit diluted acid as a drug side effect. When you go off the meds, the acid returns to full strength, but this time around you have more receptors than ever, going full blast. The resulting pain leads people to go back on the meds, thinking they still need it, and the vicious cycle begins. I was on this cycle for 28 years. Now that I understand it, I have been able to go off very slowly, with a tiny bit of pain each time I go down a bit. Once I get used to the new dose I go down further. I'm now feeling better than ever. F 54 28 years

2  GERD Where do I begin? ANXIETY and PANIC ATTACKS! Depression, tiredness, dehydration and constipation. Just a general feeling of not feeling or being well. I originally began taking this medication because of nighttime GERD. I think in the beginning, I tolerated this poison. I started having small anxiety attacks and just thought it was the stress of daily life. Fast forward a few years and I now have full blown ANXIETY and PANIC ATTACKS. Depression is a daily battle. I have been to the doctor many times over the years and he said there is no way it could be the Zantac 150 causing it. He gave me Klonopin to kill the anxiety and panic attacks. Now I'm addicted to that! Long story short, STAY AWAY FROM THIS POISON! Think twice before believing your doctor when they say "it's safe and you shouldn't have any side effects". I am now trying desperately to find a way to get off of this stuff. My body is so used to having it, every time I try to taper, it's not successful. I'm on a hamster wheel and I can't get off. I was a happy, healthy father of two young kids and now I've missed most of their childhood because I "didn't feel good". Don't follow in my foot steps! M 55 12 years

1  Acid reflux Altered my mood for the worse. Took tablet at night, but after couple of days of taking it started me reflecting on my mothers recent death and missing one son who is away travelling, and another son. Continued with bad dreams about my mother, upsetting whereas before taking tablets I was taking everything really well that was going on with my life. Also experienced that I was agitated more in the day. Found that for the first week of taking these there were no problems at all, helped my acid reflux, more so better than 2 other types of melds for the same thing. I can't be having this by my mood changing for the worse, so will be stopping them, and try alternative which will be Braggs organic apple cider vinegar bought from Holland and Barrett, which I read up about. (Previously with omeprazole and lansoprozole I was getting more muscle and joint paints very bad I didn't get this with these - ranitidine) Why is it that doctors think you are making all these complaints and problems up w Will not take these again.  1  Ulcers Zantac took away my ulcer pain within the first day, but by day 4 I was feeling off balance, dizzy, my hands shook, diarrhea, severe headaches, and felt as if I wanted to throw up. I decided to stop taking the drug after 8 days even though my doctor said to take it for 14. Stopped cold turkey, not thinking I needed to wean myself after being on it for such a short amount of time - but I was wrong! I honestly thought I was dying. Anxiety, shakes, nausea, unbearable dizziness, loss of appetite. It was horrible. My doctor never told me I had to wean myself off this drug. Why is it doctors in general ( and maybe I should just refer to my own) always tends to prescribe drugs first. He never offers any natural ways of solving my problems. I walk out with a prescription nearly every time I see him. In general, I'm getting a bad impression of the medical profession. I used to think they knew how to cure problems, but I'm beginning to feel more and more they haven't a clue, and offen result to trial-and-error with drugs they know little about. It seems the pharmaceutical industry has convinced the medical profession they've got the answer to every problem. But I don't think they do. If they did, these drugs wouldn't come with the myriad of side effects that they do. M 55 8 days

4  GERD Nightmares I have found that taking a generic (Sainsbury's) ranitidine 75mg around 8pm in the evening gives me relief from heartburn for around 24 hours. If I forget to take it I will wake up around 2am with severe heartburn so I am confident it is doing something. Very low cost, around £1 for 12 tablets. I have seen my doctor who says it is OK to keep teking it, but to go back and see her if anything changes, they may decide to do an internal endoscope examination. But for now I'm happy to carry on with the single daily dose. M 56 60 days

1  Erosive Gastritis Was on ranitidine 150 mg 3 times, then 2 times, then I dropped it to 1 time and now I dropped it completely...a nightmare of a drug...stomach pain, upset stomach, dizziness, confusion, memory loss, brain fog... a medication that needs to be discontinued, unfortunately it is sold over the counter, people need to change their eating habits because these new drugs that the doctors are pushing on us are doing us more harm than good. When has a doctor ever said "eat a banana for heartburn or drink a spearmint tea for gas and bloating??All they do is right us up for drugs, and how do pharmaceuticals get away producing these drugs that is doing more harm than good? by announcing all the possible side effects so like that they do not get sued... why take a pill with all those side effects, you will need another pill to deal with the side effects of the other pill... it's a cycle that does not stop... stay away from this pill, no good whatsoever !! 56 4 months

2  reflux constipation, funny taste in mouth,..... I took the generic (renitidine) 300 mg. It helped only slightly. When I went to the GI I was told that this drug is more of a histamine blocker as opposed to a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) which is what you really need to take with severe reflux. I didn't have alot of heartburn or indigestion before beginning the med., just alot of pressure behind the sternum along with a cough and a 'funny noise' when swallowing (especially a.m.'s). I was encouraged to try nexium (which I don't think I like what I see as to side effects....AND cost), but they suggested carafate along with a generic form of a PPI and go from there. We'll see. I don't take meds, don't really want to have to start now as the side effects seem to be at times 'worse' than the original symptoms. :O( The natural remedies didn't work with the amount of reflux I was having. An apple about an hour before bedtime seemed to help 'somewhat". F 57 6 weeks

1  Gerd I only used this for occasional Gerd. I suffer from various anxiety issues and colitis. Last night I took one Zantac 150 and shortly after I was sweating like crazy, shaking like I had the DT's, major anxiety attack with all the symptoms. Then my colitis kicked into overdrive with severe cramping, pain, watery diarrhea. Never again. I'm glad I found this page. None of the medical sites listed any of this as a side effect. It's ridiculous. This is a dangerous drug for people with mental health issues. M 57 1 months

1  GERD and Stomach Inflammation Extreme depression, dizziness and the worst anxiety attack ever. I figured the side effects would be temporary until day 10 when I had a horrific anxiety attach. I nearly went to the hospital. I made a decision to lower my dose from 150mg 2 x a day to 75 mg 2 x a day. The anxiousness still remained. After reading the reviews I see why! Thank God I listen to my body. I experienced the worse of my side effects after day 10. Dont believe the lie that you should be over it by then. I found Dill pickle juice to help the acid.
