| 4 | Psychosis, poss. schizoaffective | first few months: suicidal thoughts, tiredness; increased appetite, increased need for sleep- or rather, automatic eating once started, and sleeping 12 hours plus or just feeling unable to get out of bed, even when lying awake for hours. for the first months, on 300 mg, i found it hard to get out of bed at all. after 6 months i reduced to 200, after 8 to 150 mg and had more energy. my cholesterol and triglycerids have gone up in the time since starting medication. I also generally found myself thinking slower, having more trouble finding words or finding my thoughts looping on seemingly inconsequential thoughts. i recently realized that i might have sleep apnea, and am wondering whether this might be the reason for the tiredness on this drug. | I was put on 300 mg Seroquel at a point when i was deep in a psychotic state, had been hallucinating for about 6 weeks after about 3-4 months of changed -manic to mixed- mood. this happened after a bad and stressful time- though could also be partially caused by 'self-medicating' with cannabis from an early age combined with schizophrenic ancestry. Seroquel helped me out of the psychosis quickly- numbed me enough to sleep after being awake almost every night for weeks and dulled the hallucinations enough for me to start thinking in normal patterns again. within weeks, i had no hallucinations at all. i started taking it at the same time as people around starting to talk to me about the state i was in so it was probably a combination of medication& having the support of family& friends. suicidal thoughts following this could have been the 'natural opposite' of the psychotic high i had experienced for several months and the social fallout that came with it. Seroquel helped me, however, i don't think this is a drug that should be prescribed lightly- it does affect the body and moods in profound ways (and its not nightol- nobody should take a powerful antipsychotic 'for sleep') its effect on hallucinatory psychotic states might have been a life saver for me, which makes the few side effects that i have experienced fade in comparison- however i want to live without medication as soon as possible and think this sort of drug should be a very last resort. | F | 29 | 9 months 150 retard 1X D | 1/9/2011 | |
