| 5 | Restless Leg Syndrome | Heavy snoring, daytime sleepiness | My GP put me on Clonazepam (the generic name in the UK) about 10 years ago as I was not getting any sleep with my restless legs (Ekbom Syndrome). He told me to start on half a tablet (2mg tablet) for one week and increase to 2 tablets over a month. It was lovely to be able to fall asleep within 5 mins of hitting the pillow and my other restless leg symptoms (such as twitchy arms and legs occuring during the day when sitting at my desk, virtually disappeared. Then a few years ago, the chemist gave me the wrong dose (0.5mg) which I did not notice as they looked the same. I took these over the month and suffered the most horrendous withdrawel symptoms, made worse because I didn't know what was causing them - daytime tremors, hallucinations, nightmares (when I could get to sleep), anxiety, suicidal ideations etc, etc. I was relieved when I finally noticed the pack said 0.5mg and realised what had made me so ill the past month but was also horrified to find how powerful the drug was and what it does to your body. I have managed to wean myself down to 3mg a night and will try and come down a bit more but very gradually. The restless leg problem is fine on 3mg and it makes me wonder why my GP prescribed such a high dose. Why didn't he prescribe 0.5mg to start with and see how I got on with that dose? I still worry what this drug is doing to my body and won't be happy til I am off them.
