NORETHIDRONE  (NORETHINDRONE):  This medication is used to prevent pregnancy. It is often referred to as the "mini-pill" because it does not contain any estrogen. Norethindrone (a form of progestin) is a hormone that prevents pregnancy by making vaginal fluid thicker to help prevent sperm from reaching an egg (fertilization) and changing the lining of the uterus (womb) to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg. If a fertilized egg does not attach to the uterus, it passes out of the body. This medication also stops the release of an egg (ovulation) in about half of a woman's menstrual cycles. While the "mini-pill" is more effective than certain other methods of birth control (such as condoms, cervical cap, diaphragm), it is less effective than combination hormone (estrogen and progestin) birth control because it does not consistently prevent ovulation. It is usually used by women who cannot take estrogen. To reduce the risk of pregnancy, it is very important to take this medication exactly as prescribed. Using this medication does not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases (such as HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia).   FDA Approval Date: 2010-07-22 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Birth control Horrible upset abdominal pain. Never went away. Because gluten intolerant, diagnosed with IBS. Can't stomach food. Can't lose weight. None of this went away after taking it for a couple of months. Kept taking it only got worse. My thyroid is almost hypothyroid. Low blood pressure problems. Dizzy, irregular periods. Migraines. Gas and constipation. And no one will ever believe you or take you seriously. They will tell you that your are normal and that you're symptoms will go away. They won't. Just stop taking it. I was actually put on a 5MG tablet to try and get rid of my periods. It highlighted the symptoms to the point that I couldn't ignore it anymore. Fck gaslighting. I got cold sweats. I can't hold more than 1/4 cup of food in my stomach. Intense pain. F 25 2 years

4  Birth control Spotting, minor hair loss, irregular periods for first few months Worked great as birth control if you take at same time each day. Side effects were minor and decreased after a few months. Overall I would recommend this to others. A lot fewer side effects than combination birth control pills. F 38 3 years
