1  Gerd Depression, Anxiety and ended up getting Colitis. This is one of the worst drugs I have ever taken. The depression was almost too much to take. Went back to my old medication. Never again. F 79 6 months

2  Gerd Anxiety, Fatigue, Intrusive thoughts, Depression, Headaches, Stomach sensetivity I started taking 40mg Pantoprazole beginning of June for Gastritis(I put GERD because there are more reviews under that so more people might see this) and took until about the 3r week in August. That whole time my anxiety just got worse and worse. While the panto worked for my gastritis, it made my stomach much more sensetive to different foods, and my diet had to change completely. This resulted in me losing 30+ lbs. Anyway, in the beginning I was just having anxiety in the mornings, and thought it was just from the newly diagnosed stomach issues. It was a hard time I had to go through with the sudden diet change and feeling so weak. As time progression my anxiety just worsened. By the beginning of July I had my first panic attack in years. My dosage was eventually changed to just 20 mg a day, and that still worked, however my anxiety and depression was still there. Towards the end of July and in to August, the anxiety kind of turned it up a notch and was getting so bad I was having to rely on Xanax. I've had anxiety since 2013, but its mostly been well controlled and rarely had to take any meds for it. Around the middle of august I started getting intrusive thoughts which was really scary for me. I had never experienced anything like it before and was trying to figure out what was going on. Somehow it clicked and I realized that the day after I started taking Pantoprazol was when my anxiety got bad. At this point I decided to stop taking it and tapered off over a week. M 32 3 months

1  Severe acid reflux Horrific nightmares, raised blood pressure, severe headaches and depression. I'm about to stop taking them! I'm scared to go to sleep because waking up to my nightmares are so painful, both mentally and physically! The depression is horrible as well. I don't want to feel like this anymore. I am on other medications but I've been on them a while and never had any issues before this new medication. F 40 1 months

1  Gastritis Anxiety, Depression, Intrusive thoughts, Brain Fog, Ringing in Ears, Acid Rebound Not prescribed any other meds. I started this medication in February of 2021 for gastritis while my doctor figured out what was really wrong. I have never had a panic attack or suffered from anxiety/depression before. Approximately a month after taking this medication I began having several panic attacks a day that would manifest randomly. After 2-3 more months on this med the anxiety morphed into depression, and intrusive thoughts. I had several other side effects that developed such as brain fog, weakness, and ringing in my ears. Brain fog is horrible, feels like your walking through life in a haze and not really there at all. After months of trial and error on testing, we finally figured out that my gallbladder was working at 19% and had it removed in June 2021. My doctor wanted me to keep taking this med due to possible increased acid from gallbladder removal. I talked with my doctor about this med and how I suspected that it may have been causing all of my issues. My doctor agreed due to PPI's being known to cause B-12 and magnesium deficiency. Currently weening off and hope to be done soon. I've have started feeling better in recent weeks but still have flare ups of anxiety and hopelessness. This med works for some people, but this has made 2021 the worst year of my life. M 25 8 months

1  Peoric ulcers Nausea, bloating, gas, thudding rapid heartbeat, anxiety, fatigue I took this drug originally for 6 weeks and had nausea, bloating, gas and fatigue. I thought it was the ulcers. I stopped taking it after 6 weeks. I saw the gastroenterologist and he told me to keep taking it to make sure the ulcers had healed. This time I had the thudding rapid heartbeat and anxiety. Stopped for a couple of days in case the new symptoms were due to the drug. Decided to give it another go due to rebound indigestion. Again the rapid heartbeat and anxiety. I've been off it now and the symptoms are still there but lessening a little each day. The cure is worse than the disease in my case. I would caution anyone taking pantaprozole, especially for an extended period. F 64 6 weeks

1  Mild gastritis Was able to tolerate for about 14 days but during that time I was having vivid nightmares, muscle spasms, heart palpitations, panic attacks and depression but still took it because I could eat and then about day 12 woke up nauseated lasted all day did not go away here I am day 17 and can't take the side effects anymore will be stopping tomorrow and hoping for the best with antacids...Tried 2 other ppi before this and didn't last more than a day on them. I don't think they are for me. Really wish my Dr. had offered me some advice on things such as lifestyle and diet changes I could have done instead of telling me I need these to get better. They have made my symptoms worse....Before pantoprazole I had shooting pains when eating fried fatty foods had an endoscopy, they found mild non bacterial gastritis. After just 2 weeks of ppi have the most painful burn in upper belly and chest but no shooting pains every night and every morningwhen lying down..I was better before taking these and I hope this is just temporary because these pills have made my life unbearable.  4  Acid reflux The only thing I have noticed is that I am extremely hungry. I'm kinda ok with that right now considering I've only been eating once a day for a very long time. I see some people are saying diarrhea but I wonder if their doctor put them on a certain diet. I can't have any fried foods, no Spivey food, no red sauces. F 35 2 weeks

4  Nausea from foods No side effects at all I took this for 2 months for nausea after eating. It helped some, but some foods still gave me nausea, the doc had said that I would be able to eat everything. He wanted me to take it forever, but the manufacturer said they have not done any studies of long term side effects after 60 days. F 65 60 days

1  Stomach ulcer Felt high and ďon somethingĒ every time I took this. I noticed after awhile it severely impacted my tolerance for alcohol, I got a DUI because of this. Major job transportation problem! This is not warned about on the prescribing literature, which I read thoroughly. My doctor never warned me about this or any other side effects. I also notice it makes me very, very drowsy, itís hard to concentrate. This affects my job performance. I tried taking it before bedtime, and couldnít get out of bed in the morning. Just awful! Iím angry about all of this, and from what I have learned on WorstPills.org, and internet searches. It alleviated the stomach pain, but I did not heal quickly. Doctor then told me to double the dose and come back in 3 months...but no way! I was having such issues with 1x /day, that now I have stopped this PPI completely. I still feel its effects in my system 2 weeks later. Really unhappy with this whole experience. Iíll use aloe drinks F 54 3 months

PANTOPRAZOLE SODIUM  (PANTOPRAZOLE SODIUM):  Pantoprazole is used to treat certain stomach and esophagus problems (such as acid reflux). It works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes. This medication relieves symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough. It helps heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus, helps prevent ulcers, and may help prevent cancer of the esophagus. Pantoprazole belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). The injection form of this drug is used for a short time when you cannot take the medication by mouth. When possible, your doctor should switch you to the form that is taken by mouth.   (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)
