DIOVAN HCT  (HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE; VALSARTAN):  This drug is used to treat high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. This product contains two medications: valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide. Valsartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) and works by relaxing blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily. Hydrochlorothiazide is a "water pill" (diuretic) that causes you to make more urine, which helps your body get rid of extra salt and water.   FDA Approval Date: 2006-04-28 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  High blood pressure The diuretic component tends to send me to the bathroom a bit more than I'd like... but the extra OOMPH from the diuretic makes my doctor VERY HAPPY with my blood pressure! My doctor had me taking Diovan and hydrochlorothiazide separately until they came out with the 160/25 dosage form. Now, only one pill (ironically, smaller than Diovan 160!). M 47 4 years
