SUBOXONE  (BUPRENORPHINE HYDROCHLORIDE; NALOXONE HYDROCHLORIDE):  This medication contains 2 medicines: buprenorphine and naloxone. It is used to treat opioid (narcotic) dependence/addiction. Buprenorphine belongs to a class of drugs called mixed opioid agonist-antagonists. Buprenorphine helps prevent withdrawal symptoms caused by stopping other opioids. Naloxone is a narcotic antagonist that blocks the effect of opioids and can cause severe opioid withdrawal when injected. Withdrawal is less likely when naloxone is taken by mouth, dissolved under the tongue, or dissolved on the inside of the cheek. It is combined with buprenorphine to prevent abuse and misuse (injection) of this medication. This combination medication is used as part of a complete treatment program for drug abuse (such as compliance monitoring, counseling, behavioral contract, lifestyle changes).   FDA Approval Date: 2002-10-08 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Opiate/Opioid Addiction I have absolutely no desire or craving to use & abuse any opiate, or pain killer (nor even benzo) since being on Suboxone. And I quit suddenly on my very first day of Sub therapy - NO withdrawals or discomfort. Suboxone does its job extremely well. I'm living and succeeding again. The only side effects from once-a-day Suboxone are: slow urination and constipation. No heavy sedation, but if I sit still too long I might doze off. Because my insurance fully covers the Suboxone therapy its totally a Win-Win deal: $8 per month refill co-pay, vs. $400/month chasing down my former drug of choice. M 52 2 months

2  Get off Vicodin The first three years were great I had plenty of energy work 50 hours a day and even went to the gym 3 to 5 days a week. After that I started to lose energy and started taking Adderall to make up for it. Before I knew it I needed Xanax also to come down from the Adderall. It was a big revolving door I needed the Suboxone for the pain that Adderall for the energy in the Xanax to come down from the Adderall to sleep at night. I'm still on the Suboxone and have tried to fight through withdrawal symptoms at least five different times to get off it. One time I had 30 days clean and could not take it no more. After 30 days I was still in pain with no energy and very depressed so went right back to the Suboxone Adderall and Xanax. The withdrawals from Suboxone r 10× worse then any withdrawals I ever had from the vicodin. At least I could go to work if I was out of Vicodin when I don't have my Suboxone I can't even get out of bed or hardly walk and that is just the physical part the mental part is even worse. I have definitely seen a loss in testosterone energy, I hardly talk to anybody or leave the house anymore so I know it has a effect on your brain. I also quit my job of 15 years which I really regret now. I'm not trying to blame anybody but I don't think Suboxone was made to stay on for 9 years. It was new when I first got on it and now I'm really regretting even trying it. The doctor should have thrown me in a inpatient program for two weeks and I would have been off the V Either the doctors did not know what they were doing when the Suboxone first hit the shelves or they didn't care. My doctor would charge me more than any other patient just for the Suboxone treatment at $200 each appointment plus my insurance would never cover the Suboxone at all and I was paying at least 200 to $300 a month just for the Suboxone. It's way cheaper to stay on Street opiates and I believe less harmful but that's just my opinion. I also had a doctor telling me he could no longer prescribe Suboxone to me because he did not renew his certificate and just threw me out on the street. Most doctors care more about their pocketbook then they really care about their patients and I hope someone sues the pants off the maker of Suboxone someday I will definitely jump on board!  4  Depression Initially slight waves of nausea, some brief periods of mild anxiety This is a miracle drug for me! I have had severe depression for 10+ years and nothing has worked; I've tried over 25 medications from all classes including SSRIs, SNRIs, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, TCAs, MAOIs, even a failed round of TMS. A new (very liberal) pdoc uses this for his treatment resistant depression patients with great success. I felt a huge difference in hours! I'm titrating from 0.5 mg to 2mg, but I already feel tremendous relief! No crying, just... normal. Almost no side effects... my doc said it could be sedating but I actually find it a bit activating! It seems to have curbed my appetite, too. I know it's an unusual choice of antidepressant, but for me this drug is a miracle; I hope more doctors can be open-minded about prescribing it because I think it could help a lot people. F 36 8 days

3  oxycodone Rx discontinued this caused a bit of insomnia at first. I need to keep hydrated because I don't feel thirsty enough to get the desired amount of water in my system. this medication has stopped my opiate abuse. I was known to law enforcement as a drug dealer when I was prescribed oxy. I am now leading a clean and legal lifestyle. I now need to have a plan for detox as the clinic I go to charges me $400 a month which is substantial for me. I know I need to give up the expense of smoking both cigarretes and pot. if by doing this I Will be able to offset some of my cost, the clinic I attend will lend support to this endeavor.  2  Opiates & Meth Sweating, sleeping, dizzy, nausea, red face, feeling like I don't know where I'm at, irregular heartbeat, stomach cramps, back pain, left arm pain, right side of neck pain, etc.... I get up at 4AM to start my day. I work behind a computer all day. It's almost impossible to keep my eyes open. I nod off all day. I go home & have supper about 530PM then by 630PM I fall a sleep. I sleep until 330-4AM everyday since I started suboxone. I am sleeping my life away let alone afraid of losing my job from nodding off frequently all day at work. I think maybe I should go back to methadone as much as I hate to! F 40 3 weeks

2  Opiate addiction Always tired, no energy, weight gain, back pain Dont get me wrong I am very greatful for the program I'm in. My doctor is absolutely wonderful! Its way better than the alternative. I have much better relationships with the people in my life. When I first started in the program I was on 16mg of SUBUTEX for about 9 months. My energy was the best it has ever been. I was sleeping through the night and up ready to go the next morning and my weight was maintained . Then I had to switch to suboxone and my energy was completely depleted and I starters gaining weight even though nothing in my diet or routine had changed. Contrary to popular belief I didn't feel better on subutex BC I was misusing it like some people do. It went under my tongue just like the suboxone. I don't know why its such a big difference but it is! I just feel it should be my choice what I'm taking. I know how I feel and what is helping me. F 26 2 years

1  Chronic pain Mouth sores and nausea, vomiting. Can't be due to terrible taste which makes me vomit I feel nauseous, hallucinations which is something I have never had, extreme dizziness, confusion, insomnia, rash that goes off and on and basically feel like I zombie, can't even put a sentence together due to brain fog, extreme itchiness, headaches daily, extreme anxiety and agitation Was on Dilaudid TID for seven years after a near fatal accident which has cost me several physical problems and pain for seven years after a near fatal accident which has cost me several physical problems. I was not given this to detox but for chronic pain. I have tried everything I have a sensitivity to many drugs. I also have fibromyalgia which was a direct result from the accident. I don't understand why my doctor would switch me to Suboxone when Dilaudid was providing adequate pain relief. I have never asked for an increase and Jose or ask for an increase and how often I take it at this point the side effects outweigh the benefits, and would rather deal with the pain then the side effects. I'm scared about the hallucinations and that alone makes me not want to take it. I have concerns regarding acute injuries or surgeries that are not booked in advance and terrified that if something serious happens, I won't have pain relief. I also understand that this is incredibly difficult to withdraw from. Dr. Tapered the Dilaudid over a two day. And I was extremely sick, don't want to go through that again and since I've only taken it for 10 days, I am hoping I won't have withdrawal symptoms. I want to go back to what I was taking because I believe if something isn't broken, don't change it and feel that my doctor gave me this Suboxone even though she knows I take it for pain and due to the Mount of years I have been on it, I certainly don't get high and so I don't u F 53 10 days

5  Opiate Addiction I've been on suboxone for just about five months now. When i first started taking suboxone I had so much energy. I couldnt sleep because I had so much energy, I just wanted to clean or work out. I also noticed I wasn't hungry anymore. Within the first two weeks of starting suboxone I lost 20 Pounds. Within another month and a half I lost another 20 pounds. I'm not complaining about the weight loss but it worries me because I'm not trying to lose weight anymore and the weight is still falling off me. Another thing I've noticed, when I sleep I have very bad aches in my bones so im constantly tossing and turning. Its really annoying. F 24 5 months

1  Coming off vicodin At first severe night sweats and insomnia (lasted for weeks, nothing to do with the original addiction). Later, after about a year, extreme drop in testosterone, extreme fatigue and narcolepsy (I would just fall asleep at work, and every day take a nap in my car). Also, even taking the medicine twice a day, I would wake up with extreme anxiety. Towards the end, I would only feel like moving or thinking within two to three hours of taking a dose. I am beginning to see more reports like mine. My doctor told me none of my symptoms were related to Suboxone, that it was all from the original addiction or depression. I was on this med three times as long as I was addicted to vicodin. I have been taking SSRI's for 20 years for depression and the stories coming out about suboxone remind me of trying to explain SSRI withdrawal to my psychiatrist. He absolutely denied it could be possible. It wasn't until forums like these began to appear that doctors were forced to acknowledge 'SSRI discontinuation sydrome'. They even had to make up a nice, medical sounding name for simple withdrawl. I am amazed that these intelligent but apparently naive or corrupt physicians would rather believe pharmaceutical sales reps whose only concern is profit than patients who just want to feel better.  1  Come off Percocet from pain clinic At first side effects were nausea and sweating. Now there's whole myriad of side effects-no appetite =extreme weight loss, severe anxiety, narcolepsy, severe depression Stick with natural opioids. You won't die if you run out.  1  Opiod maintenance DO NOT TAKE THIS DRUG FOR MORE THAN 3 DAYS! USE IT TO COME OFF OTHER DRUGS, NOT SUBSTITUTE ONE FOR ANOTHER! MAYBE THAT'S WHY THE CALL IT SUBUTEX/SUBOXONE, THEY WANT YOU TO SUBSTITUTE AND BECOME A LIFELONG ADDICT. MY PLAN WAS TO TAKE IT UNTIL I WAS READY TO STOP AND HAD MY LIFE IN ORDER ECT. THIS PLAN IF BACKFIRING BECAUSE AT FIRST I FELT GREAT AND MOTIVATED AND NOW I FEE TIRED AND DEPRESSED AND UNMOTIVATED. I HAVE LOST WEIGHT, SEX DRIVE, LIBIDO, HAD PROBLEMS WITH TOOTH DECAY, AND MAJOR INSOMNIA AND OVERSLEEPING. ONCE AGA IN DO NOT TAKE FOR MORE THAN THREE DAYS. I WOULD RECOMMEND NOT TAKING THIS DRUG FOR MORE THAN 3 DAYS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. TRY TO COME OFF WHATEVER YOUR ON NATURALLY AND TOUGH IT OUT. EAT BETTER, SLEEP BETTER, GET OUT THERE AND HAVE SOME SEX, EXERCISE EVERYDAY. BECAUSE ONCE YOU ARE ON SUBOXONE YOU DON'T HAVE CONTROL ANYMORE, YOUR BRAIN IS HIJACKED AND CANNOT HEAL UNTIL YOU STOP TAKING IT.
