VIENVA  (ETHINYL ESTRADIOL; LEVONORGESTREL):  This combination hormone medication is used to prevent pregnancy. It contains 2 hormones: a progestin and an estrogen. It works mainly by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation) during your menstrual cycle. It also makes vaginal fluid thicker to help prevent sperm from reaching an egg (fertilization) and changes the lining of the uterus (womb) to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg. If a fertilized egg does not attach to the uterus, it passes out of the body. Besides preventing pregnancy, birth control pills may make your periods more regular, decrease blood loss and painful periods, decrease your risk of ovarian cysts, and also treat acne.  3  I'm taking vienva to prevent pregnancy My side effects are bleeding. Sometimes cramps occur but the bleeding is my problem. F 31 0 months

 2  Contraceptive Swelling in foot and ankle, weight gain/water retention, milk supply decreased, mood swings. Within just 2.5weeks taking vienva I had gained 25lbs after just losing 35lbs after having my daughter 6weeks prior to starting pill. My foot and ankle also would swell up. My milk supply dropped where I am forced to hunt for formula and breast feed. With all this my mood was going up and down. I am heavy set sitting at 272lbs at 5'6 so I am sure that plays a part in what my side effects are. F 25 28 days

 5  PMDD Initial mild spotting; some cramping if I forget to take it. I'm using Vienva to eliminate extremely bad premenstrual depression (by way of taking it continuously to avoid menstruating at all), and it's done the job pretty much perfectly. I occasionally notice cramping if I forget to take it one day, but even when that does happen it's pretty mild. F 25 1.5 years
