TOPROL XL  (METOPROLOL SUCCINATE):  This medication is a beta-blocker used to treat chest pain (angina), heart failure, and high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. This drug works by blocking the action of certain natural chemicals in your body (such as epinephrine) that affect the heart and blood vessels.  1  Arrhythmia, elevated BP Horrible depression, shortness of breath, chest pain, unable to work out. It worked for my arrhythmia but I couldn't tolerate the side effects. M 48 3 days

 1  Tachycardia I was put on 25mg of Toprol to help control mild tachycardia (which I later found out was IST) and for the first 10 or so days I felt totally fine, but around day 11 I started feeling like my heart was barely beating and like I wasnt even alive. I'd take my blood pressure and it would be dangerously low. The scariest experience this drug has given me was I'd wake up out of a dead sleep nearly gasping for air and if I was drifting off, I'd also gasp and feel like I stopped breathing. Of course I didn't ever stop, but this drug certainly made it feel that way. F 23 15 days
