REGLAN  (METOCLOPRAMIDE HYDROCHLORIDE):  This medication is used to treat certain conditions of the stomach and intestines. Metoclopramide is used as a short-term treatment (4 to 12 weeks) for persistent heartburn when the usual medicines do not work well enough. It is used mostly for heartburn that occurs after a meal or during the daytime. Treating persistent heartburn can decrease the damage done by stomach acid to the swallowing tube (esophagus) and help healing. Metoclopramide is also used in diabetic patients who have poor emptying of their stomachs (gastroparesis). Treating gastroparesis can decrease symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and stomach/abdominal fullness. Metoclopramide works by blocking a natural substance (dopamine). It speeds up stomach emptying and movement of the upper intestines. This drug is not recommended for use in children due to an increased risk of serious side effects (such as muscle spasms/uncontrolled muscle movements). Ask the doctor or pharmacist for details.    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Nausea I got it with akathisia (intense restlessness), crying spells, loss of appetite, loss of libido, depression, extreme anxiety etc. This lead to a prescription cascade that only made me worse. I am 15 months off Reglan and 3 months off all meds. Slowly recovering. If I didn’t have a small child for whom to stay alive I don’t think I would have made it. M 34 12 days

1  Nausea/Vomiting/GERD I started experiencing severe depression, anxiety, agitation and insomnia very shorty after starting the medication. I was so restless and this medication made me suicidal. I was having such severe anxiety that my anxiety medication couldn't even bring me out of it. Horrible experience. Definitely would not recommend, especially if you already have mental health issues.  1  Vision loss I we r to the ER for some weird acute vision loss and they thought it was a migraine. They gave me this and within minutes I felt I had to break out of the chair and rip out the IV. I couldn't not move my legs or they would be severely uncomfortable. I became very anxious and as someone with bipolar disorder I was freaking out that this may induce an episode. Once they gave me more Benadryl I was fine. M 21 1 days

1  Bloating/Gerd Intense restlessness (akathisia) did not sleep for 18 days. Still have akathisia 16 months later. Facial and trunk dystonia, jaw locking, jerking, involuntary movements in hand/feet, gastroparesis, hallucinations, paranoia, OCD, cannot lie down, difficulty walking and speaking at times. Suicidality. Have about 50 symptoms including vision and hearing. I also lost my sense of smell. Research CYP450 enzymes I have multiple polymorphisms in Cyp2d6. Yolande Lucire tells it like it is. Intolerance to other drugs/vitamins/foods that were OK before reaction. Probably have mild Tardive Dyskinesia as well but waiting up to three years to see if it goes away. Do not take. Risks far outweigh benefits. People commit suicide because side effects are so bad. I'm just about hanging in there. F 41 7 months

1  Nausea, vomiting, severe headache The ER gave this to me as part of a cocktail that is used for migraines. Except I wasn't experiencing a migraine. I told the nurse I have reacted badly to Reglan in the past but she still gave it to me. As soon as she started injecting it my heart rate went up to 128, I told her my heart was racing and I didn't feel good and I felt extremely hyper, like I needed to get up and run. My legs were shaking. She stopped for a min and watched my heart rate and said it was high but it was going back down so she continued to administer more medication. I couldn't sit still! I started shaking uncontrollably, my teeth were chattering and clenching, my hands were shaking and flapping all over. I felt like I was having a seizure. She looked at me and asked if I wanted a warm blanket. I said I wasn't cold I just can't stop shaking. She said I just needed to give the medicine time to work and I should feel better. I got 2 other medications, benadryl and lorazepam. I don't remember much after that except waking up. When I woke up I had to pee. I tried to get up but my legs felt so heavy I could barely walk. One of the nurses had to help me to the bathroom because she was worried I would fall. I WISH I HAD REFUSED THAT MEDICATION. It didn't help me at all and just added to my symptoms, making me feel worse. The only thing that helped me was the zofran for the nausea and vomiting. The Reglan and other medications did nothing for my headache or the pain. They started the discharge process and a F 51 1 days

2  Migraine Given in migraine cocktail at ER & in hospital. Made me feel on edge, anxious, and restless. Couldn't sit still. Have doctor give you another dose of Benadryl- it will help. For the migraine cocktail, it's easier this or compazine which was like this but 100x worse. Didn't help my migraine. Been given this drug 5 times for migraines, side effects were the same but varied in severity F 22 1 days

1  Nausea in hospital Severe anxiety/panic/terror, severe depression, delirium, muscle spasms, twitching muscles, sore arms/legs/!back and shoulders, weakness, jaw clenching, toes twitching, hysterical crying, inability to concentrate, fear, inability of being alone, disassociation from my child, insomnia and inability to stay asleep etc Do not take this medication. I went to the ER for nausea and the dr gave me this via IV. I reacted to the first dose and they ignored me and gave me 2 more- too close together and I went into a delirium. Following that was severe gut wrenching depression and anxiety- both of which I never had before! That was 2 months ago and I have been suffering ever since. I have symptoms going on. I'm unsure of how long this is going to take but I am trying to fight for my life- as crazy as that sounds- this drug will destroy a perfectly normal life and person. I have never had mental issues before and I have had to see a psych. They prescribe meds but I won't take any. I am trying to heal on my own. However the physical stuff scares me- I am praying to God my exposure does not cause Tardive Dyskenisia. I notice I clench my jaw a lot and my neck/mouth hurts. I feel like Im holding my tongue weird and it's freaking me out. I'm seeing a neurologist soon to try and find answers. This has been a complete nightmare and I can't believe I've gone through this from a medication. I wouldn't believe it was true if it didn't happen to me- a perfectly normal functioning person turned into a basket case. This drug will put you through immense torture both mentally and physically. Please do your research and do not take this medication. I regret that day more than anything!!!!! F 32 1 days

1  Nausea and vomiting I was admitted to Yale with Sx of nausea and vomiting. In order for me to be discharged the Dr. wanted me to eat. So, the nurse gave me a double dose...she called it...of Reglan IV Push. Before giving me this drug, I told the Dr. that if the medicine has any side effect of anxiety, depression etc....I will have a paridoxal effect. He assured me that Reglan had no bad side effects. Immediately after administering this drug I felt like I had to jump out of my skin, depression, anxiety, RLS, jitteriness, disconnected from world. The nurse would not give me anything to reverse the effects and told me I should breath threw it and sent me home like that. 3 weeks later, I still have waves of depression, anxiety, RLS, jitteriness and could care less about daily activities. I don't think I will ever be the same again...very scared! This drug should be off market!!!! F 1 days
