SPIRIVA  (TIOTROPIUM BROMIDE MONOHYDRATE):  Tiotropium is used to control and prevent symptoms (such as wheezing, shortness of breath) caused by ongoing lung disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-COPD which includes bronchitis and emphysema). It works by relaxing the muscles around the airways so that they open up and you can breathe more easily. Tiotropium belongs to a class of drugs known as anticholinergics. Controlling symptoms of breathing problems can decrease time lost from work or school. This medication must be used regularly to be effective. It does not work right away and should not be used to relieve sudden breathing problems. If wheezing or sudden shortness of breath occurs, use your quick-relief inhaler (such as albuterol, also called salbutamol in some countries) as prescribed.   (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA) FDA Approval Date: 2004-01-30

1  COPD Weight gain & bloating. After 2nd hospitalization, gained 19.8 lbs in 6 months time; water retention, constant U.T.I.'s, red, burning eyes, dizziness at times. Tried to cut back on food, but would still gain weight. One day, i ate nothing and the scale went up 1.5lbs. This is a horrible drug and to think that one has to pay an outrageous price for all the pain and suffering. Every tenth capsule is empty also! Just decided today that I am stopping this drug. I will continue with my Symbicort and my nebulizer; will also continue with my exercises and hope and pray for the best. I have had some stem cell therapy, which practically saved my life after my 2nd exacerbation (out of pocket-Medicare does not pay). I feel for all of you suffering as well. I think we must be guinea pigs for this company. A class action suit would be nice! F 71 2 years

3  Asthma I've gained 24 lbs since taking it. My diet is very well controlled so I'm not overeating. In fact, I eat very little. All my weight gain is in my middle section. In fact, it looks and feels like I've got a round ball under my shirt. The last time I weighed this much was when I was 8 months pregnant, 30 years ago! Works great for my breathing though. I'm going to try to get off of it. Problem is, I like breathing. F 64 1 years

2  Copd At first worked fine with the breathing the after awhile I gained weight around the middle never was like that before. Bloated, severe eye pain, blurred vision, halos. Back pain that goes into my legs. Can. Barely walk, fatigue and sleep all broken up. Up all night urinating, dry mouth very bad. I am taking myself off this to see if I feel better. It's not worth it with these side affects. Never realized what's been happening all along. I will use my nebulizer & oxygen and see how it goes. Don't recommend spiriva not worth the side effects. Plus a lot of capsules are empty I have called company on 3 different occasions. When I was in the donut hole I paid as high as 500.00 for a 3 month supply. Not any more. F 68 3 years

1  Asthma Spiriva worked very well for breathing just over a year. Although I developed a cough that became worse each month until I couldn't hold a conversation or sleep. The last month I began urinating constantly. Developed hives all over. Vision started to blur. Withdrawal has been difficult. Hives and the urinating took 2 weeks to settle down. Vision returned in 1 week. Still have nausea and lungs ache. F 61 1 years

2  Mild asthma My doctor gave me some samples of spiriva inhalers to try out to see how i react to the medicine. I noticed every time i would take my 2 puffs in the morning my chest would start feeling tight and a pressure sensation on my chest after 15 min of taking it. Also i would get constipated and gassy once a few days past i also noticed dry mouth and extreme thirst which i found it to be annoying. It did help me breathe better but i had to stop taking it due to the chest tightness. If you plan on taking it make sure you get samples first to see how your body reacts first. Instead of spending money and not knowing how you will react to it. M 30 6 days
