3.5 Depression, OCD At first mood improved, but then binging/ craving sugary/ carby foods, drowsy (though better on 10mg than 20mg) bizarre and disturbing dreams, irritable and generally feeling out of control of emotions. Definitely start on 10mg. You might find that's all you need. The dispersible tablet tastes reasonably pleasant. You can swallow it like a normal pull, but it does start to dissolve in your mouth. I went on it because it has less sexual side effects than other SSRI s and my experience is this was true, but feeling crazy kind of counteracted that. F 55 2 weeks

3.6 Anxiety/OCD GI discomfort (temporary), dry mouth (temporary), bizarre dreams. Taken on and off for approximately 17 years. I have been Lexapro-free for periods of time but a stressful situation would trigger a panic response and I would need to restart. Psych most recently increased my dosage from 20mg to 30mg 6 months ago to address severe OCD symptoms: mainly intrusive thoughts and panic. I could not go a single day without multiple panic attacks or racing thoughts about my death or the deaths of my loved ones. I could barely function. I don't love being on Lexapro but it changed my life for the better. F 35 17 years

3.2 Major depression, GAD, OCD No side effects going on or off this medication. I had a GeneSight test done and I metabolize this medication normally. I had a couple instances of dry eyes through all the years I was on it where I had to use eye drops and not wear my contacts for a few weeks. Weight gain for sure, but didn't get bad until late 30s (in 3 years went from 115 lbs to 178lbs). Longer to achieve O but 99% of the time possible. Low libido, but depression also resulted in same so not a deterrent from using medication. A positive side effect of its sedating properties is how well I could sleep on it. When this medication is effective, which it was for the majority of the many years I took it, it put me in remission from depression, anxiety and intrusive thoughts. If an intrusive thought did enter my mind, it would immediately just go right through and not give me anxiety. It was "slippery" instead of "sticky" in my mind and I was able to go on with my day and be productive. I was so happy on this medication, in a good mood all the time, upbeat, optimistic, friendly, sharp. The best version of myself. So far the only medication I have tried that has worked to treat all of my mental health conditions. The only anxiety I felt was situational (big test, interview, presentation, etc) and it was manageable, which was a huge improvement from the constant tension, worry and uneasiness I normally feel unmedicated. People demonize this drug, but for me it was a miracle and gave me a great life for the past 20 years. F 42 17 years

3.5 OCD, Anxiety, CPTSD Please think very carefully when you're considering taking these drugs. They are an outdated, 1 fits all, personality altering, life destroying nightmare. SSRI's should be illegal. I was shoved on them by the GP when I was a child and have been on and off ever since. They make you an emotionless, loveless, unmotivated Zombie unable to engage with life. I was abused as a child and THIS is my problem. Not a flipping chemical imbalance. If only someone had helped me in the way I needed then this would never have happened. I now have to spend about 6 years tapering off these drugs as the withdrawals are a disaster. Please please consider other options. Find the root cause of your suffering and wherever possible stay away from your GP's. There is so much hope out there, so much information and new evolving trauma healing by modalities. You can heal organically you just have to become your own doctor! F 30 3 days

3.5 OCD Weight gain right from the start of taking the Quetiapine. I never had a problem with weight before, but gained 40lbs in first year and always struggled since. Quetiapine, combined with an SSRI does help with OCD intrusive thoughts, but I am still very depressed. I am just existing, not living. I pushed myself for many years to overcome lack of motivation and apathy, but eventually it all got the better of me. Mental illness totally sucks. Side effects of meds are really bad, but often overlooked by “professionals” as they want us to shut up, take the pills and not bother them. I figured out that because Quetiapine increases prolactin to decrease dopamine in the brain, we are basically being zombiefied. Dopamine is good for motivation and feeling good. It's just tinkering with our brain chemistry to make us docile and compliant. F 46 17 years

3.8 GAD,PTSD,OCD Very little to no side effects. Or at least none that I noticed. I have taken multiple medications to try and calm my anxiety with some really gnarly side effects with them. I was nervous because this was an anti-depressant and I do not have depression but I kept an open mind in hopes that it would help. I feel like my mind is more clear and I am able to focus as well as I feel things are more calm and level for me. I rarely have instances with anxiety and I am definitely more mentally organized. 3.6 Bipolar/OCD/Anxiety Only side effects have been dry mouth and random gag reflex in the morning until I eat. No nausea accompanies it. I only experience that when I regularly take my full 200mg dose. If I take half it (when I get off track) then it doesn't happen. I have been on Lamictal in addition to Prozac for over 15 years. I definitely notice a huge difference when I regularly take my full dose. I have been bad about keeping up with taking them in the past and after a couple of weeks without it I feel completely different. 3.8 OCD and panic disorder Felt somewhat loopy the first few weeks of taking Klonopin. The loopy feeling went away as I got used to the medicine. Klonopin helps my anxiety tremendously. I know a lot of people are scared of taking Klonopin because of the fear of getting addicted but as long as you take it the way you're supposed to and don't abuse it you will be okay. My racing thoughts are practically gone and I almost never have a panic attack now. I used to spend almost every waking moment living in fear to the point where I was terrified to get out of bed and now I'm a functional member of society. My anxiety used to torment my mind and I had no way to stop the obsessive thoughts but Klonopin has helped me enough that I can do all the things I never thought I would be able to do because I was too scared. 2.8 OCD, depression, anxiety Severe increase of anxiety, major suicidal thoughts, nausea, diarrhea, persistent shaking. And a couple times hallucinations. I developed serotonin syndrome while I was on this medication even though my doctor made sure my body was rid of the older ones. I can't even begin to describe how it felt, my entire body was turned against me and even though I stopped taking it as soon as the symptoms appeared it took a month for all the symptoms to finally go away. After a week the major symptoms went away then slowly I felt more like myself. If you're going though this right now and see this please know that I felt *drastically* better after it was out of my system and that you will as well. F 17 5 days

4.0 GAD, Panic Attacks, OCD Tiredness, hunger, dry mouth Xanax has been a godsend for me. I have been suffering from severe anxiety to the point where I wouldn't leave the house unless I was going to the ER, where I was visiting on a weekly basis thinking I was having a heart attack or stroke. I was finally referred to a psychiatrist who prescribed me Xanax and Lexapro. I did ok on this for awhile until the Lexapro made me gain 40lbs and I then I became majorly depressed. I have been on a few others...Klonopin, Buspar, and Effexor. All made matters worse. Xanax makes me feel like a normal person again. I can leave the house, I haven't been to the ER in a long time although I'm still a bit of a hypochondriac. I also find that the Xanax calms my OCD tendencies, which are excessive cleaning and disinfecting my house. My racing thoughts are calmed and I've lost 30 of that 40lbs. Personally, Xanax doesn't cause weight for me. It does make me hungry but if I eat something healthy and exercise regularly, this is not a problem. On Lexapro, I was working out and eating healthy with no weight loss, just gain. I looked puffy; not the same type of weight gain as normal. My doctor seems to have no issue with this medication. He's aware that I take it as needed for anxiety and to stop the racing thoughts at night before bed. I would not get on airplanes before this. I now can travel and it's nice to actually get a good nights sleep. I don't need it constantly so if I have to come off of it eventually, I hope it's not an issue but I do other thin F 34 5 years

4.5 Agoraphobia, Emetophobia, OCD, PTSD Drowsiness for the first week Ativan is my LIFE SAVER! I had it for a few months just sitting in the bottle because i'm not a fan of taking meds as I am scared of side effects because of my emetophobia, but once I took it I was so glad I did! I had agoraphobia and was housebound for 2 years, I was taking 0.5 MG when I would have mild panic attacks at home, drowsiness was the only side effect I had, but after a week or so it went away. One day my family decided I needed to get help so they gave me 2 MG of Ativan and, after 2 years of not leaving my yard, I was able to drive myself to the hospital and check myself in to get therapy. That was 2 months ago, now I take 1 MG 3 times daily and I have not had a problem leaving the house since, its a miracle drug for me and I thank God for the doctor who prescribed it to me. I will take it daily for as long as I need to, until I feel comfortable without it through the help of therapy. People will try to tell you not to take it daily, but i'm here to say from experience it works and if thats what you need to live a fulfilled life go for it! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND ATIVAN!!!! 4.6 depression (TRD),social phobia, OCD in the first 2 weeks a lot of sleepiness (which i liked), some dizziness, dry nose, and also waking up all of a sudden in the early morning. the side effects were not as bad as TCA's and SSRI's . after a few months not many side-effects, after years they all finished. took Zoloft for a couple of years, did not help much...then tried more SSRIs, TCA's, the this great medication Nardil. it took a while to work (I think maybe 6 weeks, and i need 60mg)...anyhow it started working over a period of a couple if days and it was like this deep depression and anxiety just all floated away. i actually started enjoying activities, even like washing the dishes, enjoyed speaking to people, and felt confident to be around many people anywhere. To say Nardil works is an understatement, in my experience it is a God send. after all these many yrs it still works great. also, like some other people said, i never have had any problems with the diet, other meds, etc. it is very safe for me. so, in my experience Nardil is wonderful. i am so glad i did research and asked my doctor for it, who was happy to try it for me. best of luck to all. 3.9 OCD depression Loss of appetite, slight brain fog This is the only drug that has been prescribed to me that I will take. I have taken this drug on and off for 20. Back in the day when they discovered this drug helps with smoke cession it' s cost went from 10 dollars a month to 150 a month. At that time I decided to go off of Wellbutrin. After a month without the drug I realized that the drug helped me get out of bed and function in the real world. Without the drug I couldn't hold a conversation with anyone without becoming overwhelmed and anxious. I couldn't leave the house without feeling doom and gloom. My world was turned upside down I must say it works for me . I have a lot of pains and aches, sweats. I really can't contribute this to Wellbutrin. I have tried Paxil, Buspar , Xanax, and many assorted drugs that are supposed to help. Wellbutrin is the only one that I can tolerate that works for me . I am also a smoker and when I am on Wellbutrin I have really cut back a lot. . Yes , it kills your appetite, but I am an over eater so it has helped me maintain my weight for 20 years! F 59 20 years

2.6 Adult Inattentive ADHD, OCD Stomach upset, difficulty sleeping through the night, always hungry. I've been through quite a few stimulant medications and finally told my doctor I was through with them. Was prescribed Strattera (by my own request; I do a lot of research) and have been feeling really, well.. good! Today for the first time since stopping stimulants I managed to finish everything in my work day and even started on some of the next shift's work. I honestly got bored with surfing the internet, something that I usually get stuck doing for hours, and got up to tidy my apartment instead. It's certainly a different feeling from stimulants, more of a self-directed feeling of goodness and wanting to get things done rather than the panicked overenergized nature of adderall/ritalin. The side effects haven't bothered me too much. In fact the feeling of always being hungry has *helped* because I had lost so much weight on adderall I was basically a twig with limbs. Gained over 5 pounds since starting Strattera and steadily approaching healthy weight. Best of all I don't have to force myself to eat! I would definitely recommend this drug if you can stomach it, but don't be afraid to try out alternatives if the side effects get to you. F 21 8 days

4.0 ADHD, OD, and OCD Once this medicine is taken with breakfast my son goes from bouncing off of the walls and being way too hyper, to relaxed and happy. By the time school lets out he is crabby, and just plain angry. He is fine after a small snack of fruits or vegetables. Overall this medicine works wonderfully. He is in 9th grade now and has always only gotten A's. and B's on his report cards since he started this medication in 1st grade. He is now an Honors student who has chosen to go into the medical field. He loves school and loves to learn. ADHD doesn't get in the way of what my son wants to achieve in his life. He doesn't fit in with big groups of kids but has one or two goos friends and he is fine with that. He is on a swim team. I would suggest swimming for any child with ADHD. It is a great outlet for their energy since they have to use their entire body to swim. My son did ok in softball and soccer too, but swimming is his favorite because he said he can move all around so freely. My son is also on Kapvay which is a long acting form of Clonidine. This helps with his higher blood pressure and sleeplessness due to taking the Concerta. He was on 72mg of Concerta for a few years but we took him down to 54mg with no problems two years ago. My son also got horrible migraines. Sometimes 4 or more in one day. His neurologist put him on Zoloft since my son has high anxiety and his Migraines went away completely! My son has a great team of doctors and for that I am very grateful. 15 8 years

2.5 Ocd, add, mild depression positive: ability to start tasks, focused, motivated, new enthusiasm for life, improved social skills, not "stuck" in head, desired weight loss. negative: very inconsistent, rapid pulse,, irritibility skin problems, dry mouth, tongue biting. When wearing off, depression, moodiness, fatigue, don't want to be social, hard to get up in morning until take it. This drug helped at the start. I had taken Luvox for OCD for years and my life was not bad; I had difficulty starting tasks so was told I also had add. I love it some days,am focused, positive, excited about life. Now is not consistent--does improve focus but feeling of doom.depression are present as well. I cry over little things and when it wears off I feel like I wasted time on the wrong tasks. I never had anger issues and found myself feeling rage. Last night I got lots done and planned priorities for today. This a.m. felt so tired that I blew my plan, slept till 2pm, felt awful. Every time I have gone off, I sleep too long. I get overly excited about life while on it and make plans that sound awful the next day. I have read A LOT about vyv and think it can really mess up the body. I exercise, eat healthy, and should not have such low energy. I've always had a great memory; lately I forget what I was saying. I think vyv causes adrenal fatigue, depression. I've gone off-was useless, depressed, sleeping all the time. I am starting supplements, continue exercise, eat healthy then quitting for good. I love it while it works, but it's false reality. Exercise helps, as do omega-3. I'm a believer in psych meds; think without luvox I'd still be "stuck" like I was 20 yrs ago. I'd be more focused on an ADD med,but hate vicious cycle of ups & crashes. Better to listen to Teddy Roosevelt's advice "Do what you can with what you have, wherever you are." F 40 1 years

4.5 Sleep, OCD symptoms none. I broke my thighbone and have multiple other leg injuries following a motorcycle accident and need something to relax and go to sleep - it relaxes me and puts me to sleep. No problem! I wonder what kind of shape the folks having all of the problems on this drug are in, or what they are taking along with it. I believe people in poor health to begin with seem to complain more about dependency and side effects. I am a healthy person who is not overweight or taking other mind-bending drugs other than percocet for pain - very little of that. I was having trouble keeping the injured leg still at rest after being relatively inactive all day in recovery. It's almost OCD, I feel like I just have to move it, I can't get the leg comfortable. The lorazapam makes me forget to keep moving the leg, allowing me to relax and sleep. I have gone several nights without the pill to make sure I am not becoming dependent and have had no problems except the wiggling and inability to settle down. 4.0 Depression, anxiety, OCD Short term memory loss, diarrhea, frequent urination, interrupted sleep, weight gain, occasional feeling that something is crawling on my ankles. Even with all the side effects, I continue to take this med becaus its been the most effective for me over the last 19 years. I was not willing to take meds for a long time and insisted depression could be address d through a combination of the right nutrition, exercise, therapy, and spiritual practice. All this things help, but arent enough to correct a chemical imbalance. When I found out that I was pregnant, I abruptly stopped taking it without asking my doctor. This was a huge mistake and why I am convinced hat I will always need some sort of chemical support. I felt like I had fallen into a dark hole. I couldnt think rationally, I was paranoid, I couldnt force myself to be around people, I felt hopeless and doomed. F 47 12 years

2.5 pudendal neuralgia, depression/OCD Diarrhea, difficulty urinating, and inability to orgasm They told me that Imipramine at the low dose of 25 mg would not work as an antidepressant, but wow, they were wrong! It was a lovely, lovely feeling. I felt warm, secure, clear-headed, and serene. No obsessions/compulsions. It was almost like MDMA. And the sleep was heavenly. It did dull the nerve pain, too. If it weren't for the side effects, I definitely would have continued the drug. I had torrential diarrhea 2 hours after taking it, my urine stream was pin-thin, and I couldn't even get close to orgasm. I'm keeping the bottle in case I ever get constipated. F 23 1 days

4.0 OCD Anxiety Before Sleep/Insomnia Initially, stomach upset. That went away in a few days. The feeling of calm others described set in quickly, and helped me rest for about a week... then it completely stopped having any effect on me. Felt very tired in the mornings as well, but since I have chronic insomnia and slept, it was a small price to pay. Started on 50 mg. after trazadone stopped working for me to sleep. Worked nicely for about a week, then completely stopped. I just tried 100 mg. last night hesitantly and was tossing & turning all night. Now I feel like a freight train rolled over me. F 30 14 days

3.0 ADHD, anxiety, OCD Sleepy, not aggressive in sports (not a problem before), seems less coordinated. My son cannot tolerate stimulants due to his anxiety, so we tried Intuniv to help with impulse control. It was getting to be a safety issue. It has helped him socially - less arguments with classmates. We tried taking him off over the summer, but he really needs the impulse control. Sports are very difficult: he is now timid and acts as if he does not care. M 8 15 months

2.5 Mood swings/ OCD This medication was an absolute nightmare. My son began the medicine after the Doctor swore it was weight neutral. My 14 year old gained almost 40 pounds in one year. Another side effect was that he always exhausted, and lacked any motivation. I brought the extreme weight gain to our Doctors attention at each visit. We finally had to switch doctors because the doctor insisted on leaving him on this med. This medicine also caused a thyroid condition in my child. The weaning-off process took almost two full months too. During this process, my child had night sweats and profound exhaustion.. It was an absolute nightmare. M 14 1 years

2.0 "OCD" The "OCD" is still highly prevalent, but I can now sleep; however, the sleep is full of horrific and repetitive nightmares, following the same theme night after night -- like watching the same scary horror movie as soon as you close your eyes, with it setting the tone for the first few hours of the next day upon awakening! I know that there must be a better medication, but following a nearly two year episode of sleeping for only an hour now and then, I'll live with the highly predictable nightly horror movie! 1.0 OCD and weight loss I was put on this drug for my OCD and to help me gain weight because I was very thin. It did work and helped those things, but it also caused extreme constipation. That's why I got off of it. Within a few days of being off the drug, I started to have no appetite and all food was disgusting to me. I never have had this problem in my life, I was always a big fan of food and would practically eat anything. Now it is hard for me to get enough calories in a day because I am disgusted by everything. I'll actually gag on foods now that I had no problem with prior to taking this medication. IT has been many months since I got off of it, and no change. I would strongly recommend that you do not take this medication. It has been a nightmare. I am not writing this to be a jerk, I really want to warn people of what it can do so it doesn't happen to others. At the very least, consult with your doctor about this med. I have been on many different medications in my life, and this one by far the worst M 27 6 months

CITALOPRAM HYDROBROMIDE

5.0 Depression, Anxiety, & OCD Nausea for the first 24 hours of first dose but none after that. Sweatiness and would easily overheat for the first month. Hiccups for the first week. Yawning during the first 2 weeks. Worsened anxiety in the mornings for the first month. Itchy hives broke out on my legs the first month I used this but then they went away (not sure if this was due to the drug or something else). After the first month, the only side effects that stayed were jaw-clenching (Bruxism - worst in evenings/early mornings), dilated pupils (highly sensitive to bright lights), and delayed orgasm. Citalprolam/Celexa did help me feel happier. My OCD calmed down quite a bit. I still had mild anxiety but that's a lot better than the severe anxiety I had before I started Celexa. I don't know if the drug had anything to do with it, but I used to dress like a frump but when I was on the drug I was a fashionista and got compliments on my clothing and hair frequently. I guess when you're feeling happier, you have motivation to do more things. I weaned myself off of this drug because I thought I didn't need it anymore and now I am back to my depressed/anxious self and dress like a frump again and I just don't care. I'm debating whether to get back on this drug because I also want to get pregnant but I fear it will harm the baby's development. If I were not wanting pregnancy right now I would get back on this drug in a heartbeat. F 25 4 months

5.0 PMS, anxiety, OCD, estrogen dominan At first, I had an exacerbation of my estrogen dominant symptoms. It was hard, but I had to ride it out. I think the women on here who had worsening effects of progesterone were experiencing a re-awakening of estrogen receptors. Many women WILL feel worse at first, but once this period of re-awakening is over, the benefits are tremendous. My hirsutism is noticeably better, my anxiety is lessened, my OCD is better, and I no longer need thyroid hormone. I also take 5 mg of DHEA and occasionally, a very low dose of cortisone. 4.0 ocd, schitzoid thinking I felt sedated, but overall, at a low dosage, it helped me to stop obsessing with intrusive thoughts since it helps the brain to slow down and stop fighting all the time. 4.0 OCD and anxiety Insomnia, dry mouth, sweating, irritability Was given this to help with my OCD and ruminating thoughts. I have taken Adderall and Vyvanse before, but I like this one better because it lasts longer. Started off with the highest dose of 50 MG. It worked but the "comedown" effect was bad irritability and a strong return of my obsessive thoughts. Reduced dose to 37.5 and was much better. I can sometimes feel a bit of a crash/comedown effect, but it is nowhere as bad. I am glad I decided to try changing the dose before giving up on this drug.
