HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE  (HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE):  This medication is used to treat high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. Hydrochlorothiazide belongs to a class of drugs known as diuretics/"water pills." It works by causing you to make more urine. This helps your body get rid of extra salt and water. This medication also reduces extra fluid in the body (edema) caused by conditions such as heart failure, liver disease, or kidney disease. This can lessen symptoms such as shortness of breath or swelling in your ankles or feet.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-01-28 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  High Blood Pressure I have been to the ER a total of five times taking this. Each time afraid for my life thinking I was have a heart attack. Was on a family vacation and had to miss out on an activity and go to the hospital. No telling what damage it's done to my system as I've been taking it for a year. I just now thought to check reviews and have come to realize other people were experiencing the same thing. Heart palpitations, dizziness, light-headed, body pain, insomnia etc... don't take this sh*t! M 38 100 days

5  High blood pressure, H2O retention Some body aches, especially in legs that were previously swollen (water retention). Since I take Lisinopril (20 MG) daily, I monitor my blood pressure several times a day. I have maintained normal blood pressure (average of 120 over 70) since early November 2021. M 60 45 days

4  Hypertension and headaches For the first year, did not experience anything major- maybe a slight reduction in sex drive and an occasional irritating dry cough that lasts about three days. Other than those side effects, I felt fine and my headaches disappeared. I always took 25mg. in morning with orange juice or banana for potassium. After about 18 months, experienced sudden pain in left knee joint - this left just as suddenly after two days. Did not connect with medication. Six months later, experienced painful gout in left foot as a result of increase in uric acid -lasted a week. Doctor took me off and put me on the new drug Micardis. This made me listless/tired and slightly nauseous. Will return to Hypochlorothiazide (12 mg), no alcohol (used to drink average two wines a week), more water, more exercise, reduce sugar intake and see what happens. Effective in reducing Blood Pressure to 120 over 80; heart and sugar are fine, but interferred with kidney function to eliminate uric acid - resulting in gout. Much better than Micardis so I will return with lifestyle changes to avoid the gout. M 49 2 years

4  Blood Pressure None so far. I've only been on HCT for five days, but I decided to do a little research and found this site. So far, I haven't experienced any of the side effects that have been associated with this medication. Albeit, it's far too early for me to assess whether or not the HCT pills are actually working for me, but so far I'm absolutely free of all the side-effects listed. I promise to re-post periodically to let you know how things progress from for me from both a bp and side-effect standpoint. M 43 5 days

4  High Blood Pressure My wellness exam came back yesterday, and this is after having been on IMPAX Hydrochlorothiazide for a couple of weeks now, and everything came back normal (I will provide an update with the exact numbers once I have them). I would actually rate this drug a '5' (Exceptional), except I'm not certain that it's addressed my HBP yet? I will find this out in a couple of weeks and then update the rating accordingly. I should also point out that I exercise 5-days a week (I run two miles each day), this is my only prescribed medication, I am not obese, although I don't really watch what I eat like I should.  3  Hypertension Frequent urination after bedtime is problematic. Fatigue during the day likely caused by sleep disruption. Minor chemical taste in my mouth and body. Slightly increased mucus in throat. I am a 63 year old male who has been athletic his entire life. I eat a healthy diet, I do not consume alcohol, recreational drugs and I have an exercise habit of hiking, snowshoeing and weight training. Other than my hypertension, I am fit and healthy, taking only one other medication. My primary issue with this medication is disrupted sleep at night due to frequent urination. This disruption fatigues me during the day thereby negatively affecting my energy levels for my lifestyle pursuits. I will add that I consume this medication between 0730-0800 early in the morning, and night time urination is still a negative issue for me. However, I am happy with the way that hydrochlorothiazide has been controlling my blood pressure. I prefer it to my prior script for Telmisartan which did not control my hypertension as well and left me dizzy and vomiting on one occasion in the morning upon awaking. That said, I will be working with my doctor to find a medication that does not produce frequent night time urination, controls my blood pressure as well with less fatiguing side effects. M 63 25 days

3  Hypertension Fainting was the only major side effect My doctor started me on another antihypertensive first called lisinopril 20 MG./day. He said it wasn't working well enough so he added the hydrochlorothiazide to it. One time I came home after having a few beers and ate dinner. Felt just fine, relaxing on my bed reading. Went to the fridge to get a soda and blacked out from attack of LOW blood pressure. Woke up on the floor a few seconds later not knowing where I was. Doctors are notorious for trying to get peoples bp way down. Be sure to get your own bp monitor so you know where you stand on this issue and don't take un-needed medicine. M 50 3 months

3  HBP skin rash on penis (resulted in severe lacerations during sexual intercourse, even rubbed raw when sleeping on stomach),dizziness when getting up from sitting and/or dizzy after bending down. Originally thought skin rash was from Norvasc, but found it to either be related to HCT M 34 10 months

3  high blood pressure I am on both hydrochlorothiazide(hctz)and metoprolol 50mg. I only take 12.5 mg hctz every day because I break the pill in half. I am not sure how many side effects are attributed to which drug. OK, side effects, increased urination, lowered potassium on blood tests (I now take supplements), always hungry, joint pain in my right knee is pretty bad now, confusion, tiredness, numbness in feet, irregular heartbeat, and decreased libido, and anxiety, difficulty sleeping. This drug does work to keep my blood pressure lower. It still fluctuates though. Usually it is now about 136/89 (with the drug). I go to the VA and they gave me this diuretic because they are cheap, but when I go back, I am going to ask to be changed to a different diuretic. I also want to change from metoprolol to carvedilol because carvedilol is licensed for heart failure (metoprolol is not). By the way, I still have spiking blood pressure sometimes (155/107). I quit coffee and am trying to cut out all caffeine (also a mild diuretic). M 67 2 years

3  High Blood Pressure Loss of interest in sex. The first 30 days on the medication my sugar levels were hard to manage but that resolved after 45 days. It is more difficult to maintain weight. I noticed my hair is getting thinner, not a loss but just the hair is not as thick. I am going to discontinue the medication. It works but I am going to look for another alternative due to the side affects. M 46 45 days
