SYMBICORT  (BUDESONIDE; FORMOTEROL FUMARATE DIHYDRATE):  This product is used to control and prevent symptoms (wheezing and shortness of breath) caused by asthma or ongoing lung disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-COPD, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema). It contains 2 medications: budesonide and formoterol. Budesonide belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids. It works by reducing the irritation and swelling of the airways. Formoterol belongs to the class of drugs known as long-acting beta agonists. It works by opening airways in the lungs to make breathing easier. Controlling symptoms of breathing problems can decrease time lost from work or school. When used alone, long-acting beta agonists (such as formoterol) may rarely increase the risk of serious (sometimes fatal) asthma-related breathing problems. However, combination inhaled corticosteroid and long-acting beta agonists, such as this product, do not increase the risk of serious asthma-related breathing problems. For asthma treatment, this product should be used when breathing problems are not well controlled with one asthma-control medication (such as inhaled corticosteroid) or if your symptoms need combination treatment. Before using this medication, it is important to learn how to use it properly. This medication must be used regularly to be effective. It does not work right away and should not be used to relieve sudden asthma attacks. If an asthma attack occurs, use your quick-relief inhaler (such as albuterol, also called salbutamol in some countries) as prescribed.   FDA Approval Date: 2006-07-21 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Asthma Racing HR, Constant Migraines, Shakiness, Fatigue, Muscle Cramps, Back Pain, Insomnia, Lightheadedness, Shortness of Breath, Mood Changes, Anxiety. I recently switched from Advair to Symbicort for insurance reasons. First, I noticed myself becoming highly irritable and anxious. Then, I got headaches daily. Soon after, I started to get body and back aches and develop the other side effects listed. My resting HR went from 80 to 100 and I felt highly weak until I figured out it was Symbicort. I've been off for 24 hrs. I still have most of the symptoms but they are not quite as severe as before. Hopefully, it will wear off soon. F 16 3 weeks

1  Adult onset asthma Taking 2 puffs 2x daily..severe hair loss, nightmares, muscle & joint pain, wt.gain but appetite loss, blurred vision, puffy eyes, swollen fingers, abdominal pain, nausea, thick mucus, hoarse. Began combined with Prevacid, Allegra and Flonase...all daily...side effects disabling to point of feeling need for crutches or Walker. Physician does not acknowledge extensive side effects but did order creatinine and bun tests which assess liver and kidney function..Now using saline nasal mist as needed, Prevacid as needed ...dietary acid control, Allegra only on day of weekly allergy shots...(indefinite). Tried gradual scale back of Symbicort - very very gradual...symptoms disappeared ! Negative = need some form of weight, personal profile related dosage rather than one size fits all...Near total withdrawal brings on expected withdrawal effects. Physician will not acknowledge possible steroid addiction...notes that steroid content is so minimal as to present no problems. Searching further for additional help with breathing. Considering ASHMI(anti-asthma herbal medication intervention) but only under strict supervision of Chinese herbalist.."July 2007 issue of Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology"...3 herb combo said to reduce lung inflammation & mucus in late onset asthma without lowering suppressing body's cortisol output as steroids do. ...actually raises endogenous cortisol production ! No overall adverse effects on adrenal function reported. Record of su F 75 1 years

1  During severe asthma attack in ER Nuisance of a backache right away, bronchospasm with each use later on. I did not figure out till later, when I had finished all the extra drugs (prednisone, Duo-neb), that the continuous troublesome backache was from the Symbicort. About this time, I also noticed that everytime I used it, my chest got tighter. All the more reason to stop it! I hadn't been using inhaled steroids before the attack, and did fine. ER claimed I got the attack because I wasn't on them. It was a one time thing, I hadn't had any real problems not being on those inhalers. I told the pcp, but she said she'd never heard of either backache, or worsening of breathing when using this inhaler. I tapered off in a few days. The backache finally went away a week after that. I'm not going to keep taking a drug that makes me feel worse instead of better. Seems the doctors tune out people who have bothersome effects from these drugs, and claim they've never heard of them.  1  Asthma At first I didn't get any side effects,!but some side effects I've been getting recently have been high mucus production where I get to the point that when I take a deep breath in my airways would close at the end of the breath and do that whistle thing (a sign of asthma) At times I did feel really nauseas throughout the time I've been taking symbicort (not because of a cold or anything else like that) I honestly hate it, it's scary because I cough a lot and my throats closes up and I'm scared it'll just close up even more and I'll stop breathing in my sleep. I honestly do not reccomend this, to me my normal serertide was much stronger-either I need a stronger one or it just doesn't work for me F 15 2 months

1  Asthma My asthma is now worse since using symbicort..I started with 80...jumped to 160..I became ill last oct 16..I was put on Breo 1st ..I told my lung doc..I felt like my lungs/bronchi tubes were sticking together and I was coughing alot..so then I was put on symbicort 80..I noticed improved breathing..but then another lung doc upped symbicort to 160..promblems started. .had an asthma attack where I felt my chest was depressed. .could not breath well ..coughing and gasping for air ..went to the hospital. .was put on an hour long treatment to open me up..that happened again a month apart with complications through out..coughing constantly..increased mucous production ..labored breathing..weight gain..sore throat. Raspy voice..to the point of losing my voice..now on 3 month..and so far I'm totally wanting off this med..my lung doc now tells me he wants to try a new injection on me due to some increased eosinophils they found through blood testing..doctor said yes I have asthma but my asthma is different. .so he wants me try this 9000 dollar shot...so I dont want to be an experiment so I dont think I'm doing it..I am fearful and not ready to die so I'm changing lung doctors and going to start all over again with this asthma stuff...I'm so thankfull for all the info I read off of this site. .I hope I have helped someone through my experience through my story with symbicort...this drug is dangerous..I hope that our government reads these sites..ca F 60 3 months

1  Asthma Chronic fatigue; painful muscle cramps/spasms in legs/feet/arms/ abdomen/back/lips etc.; muscle weakness, muscle pain, exercise intolerance (had to give up running etc), muscle twitches and fasiculations, frequent sore throats Symptoms cleared after I stopped taking Symbicort - wish I had stopped it sooner as the side effects took away 2 years of my life! I was prescribed it to help improve my running as had exercise induced asthma. Whilst on it I could barely walk. Drs told me I had post-viral fatigue and stress. So much better now I am off Symbicort! F 46 2 years

1  Bronchitis On day 7, administered dosage sitting down, stood and felt fine then out of the blue, blacked out about 2 minutes later. Lucky only bruised knees and temple. I stopped Symbicort. Some symptoms prior to black out: increase mucus, tightness in chest, stuffy nose, voice raspy, depressive thoughts (unusual). Also taking antibiotic. This is a very dangerous drug! Before catching a cold, which resulted in bronchitis, I was a very healthy active person. F 59 7 days

1  Asthma From start date I have had recurring chest infections. It maybe a coincidence but worth mentioning. My voice has become hoarse frequently, even with the recommended washing mouth out after use. I have been to A&E twice for rapid resting heart rate since using this. I have been tested for every possible ailment that is connected to racing heart and nothing. I am now coming off symbicort. To get the drug I have to breathe deeply. When suffering from the pain of recurring chest infections it is extremely difficult to do so. F 36 4 months

Pylori = up goes asthmatic symptoms Pulmonologist ordered 10mg of Prednisone and Symbicort. post 8 day hospitalization for severe bronchitis - scope and culture and sensitivity negative. Prednisone QID for 5 days, TID for 5 days, BID for 5 days and then once a day for 5 days. Crashed on day after last 10mg Prednisone dose taken. Doctor did not follow 2.5 mg dosage lowering switch from oral steroids (Prednisone) to inhaled steroid (Symbicort).  1  COPD Started on 160 and after heart palpitations dose reduced to 80.4 BID. The medication gave me tremors, slight weight gain, moon face, and excess sputum production. Leg cramps were horrible and every physician I questioned had no suggestions to relieve them. After 4 horrible years on it I asked my pulmonologist to get me off Symbicort and was recently prescribed Anoro. This works much better for me and I am glad to be off the steroids. Haven't used a rescue inhaler since changing medication. F 65 4 years

1  As a preventative asthma pump Heart palpitations which caused dizziness, shortness of breath, chest discomfort and mood is low. I have had asthma all my life. I've always been on the pumps and most recently I was on seretide 250 which I was perfectly happy with. On a routine asthma check they decided to move me to symbicort, obviously I asked them why because I was happy. They showed me a little medical book that belongs to them. Seretide cost something like £65, symbicort £7.50. I appreciated their honesty and gave it a go, but the difference in price is shown through how horrible a drug this is. I've never had problems ever with any asthma pump or with my health, yet this week I've seen the doctor twice and also went to a&e through these absolutely horrible side effects. I could barely walk let alone jog without the heart palpitations stopping me in my tracks and it alarmed me. I'm fit yet I'm worried to do anything at the moment. Obviously I'm off it now and have been for 4 days, I'm still getting symptoms so I'm hoping it's working it's way out of my body. It's a horrible cheap drug and I would NOT recommend it. F 35 2 weeks
