It may also be used in combination with other medication to treat depression. Aripiprazole is known as an antipsychotic drug (atypical type).  4  psychotic symptoms i was taking Geodon for some psychotic symptoms. have sleep problems (insomnia), switched to Abilify and i felt like i gained some of my energy back (still have sleep problems, though). i haven't had very many side effects with abilify and taking it seems to prevent the onset of my psychotic symptoms. geodon seemed to help me lose all the weight i gained from zyprexa and helped me keep it off. my weight on abilify has fluctuated and i have not been able to return to my ideal baseline.  4  Bi Polar II, Depression, Paranoia I needed to update my review for Abilify. I decided to try it again since I had great luck with it my first week of taking it last time. I did some research and talked to my doctor about taking it in really small doses since I'm really sensitive to medication and he was fine with it. So I got a pill cutter and carefully divided it into 8ths. By taking only an 8th at night, I had a great reduction in my depression. My only side effect has been a little bit of inner tension and some grogginess which only lasted the first week. My belief is that a big portion of the negative reviews on Abilify were those from people who had taken too much to begin with and couldn't take the side effects. I highly recommend talking to your doctor about taking it in small doses. Another positive is, for the first time in years I can drink caffeine with out getting anxiety. I've also noticed that I want to get out more and be social. One more thing to add, by taking it in this small of dose I'm not getting any intense food or carb cravings, in fact I think I am hungry less than before I started taking it. I'll see if that reflects on the scale. M 36

4  Autism and Tourettes Syndrome I was on Abilify for about 5 years and then had to go off of it. I lost a great deal of weight when I went off of it, but my behaviors got worse. I could not think clearly. I recently went back on the Abilify and I have gained a great deal of weight in a very short period of time. Not happy about that. Also, my appetite has increased slightly, and it makes me extremely tired. This truly gets rid of tics (from Tourette's) and controls alot of the behaviors from Autism, but the side effects are just awful. There really is no drug out there that works as well, and that is a shame. Wish someone would develop a drug that didn't have so many side effects. F 15

3  Mood stabilizer along with Zoloft I took 1 mg daily and it helped but caused too many side effects. I'm very med-sensitive. I've stopped Zoloft at this point. I was on Zoloft and Abilify but stopped both due to weight gain. After a lot of research I'm adding Abilify back at 1 mg every three days. I'm very med-sensitive and tend to respond at lower doses than other people do. Will be back to post how this goes. Something has to help. I'm a wack-job right now. Can't control my thoughts and I dwell on bad stuff too much. Can't get sad events out of my mind etc. I have to give Abilify another chance at a reduced dose. F 62

2  Paranoid schizophrenia Lack of motivation, low libido, flat affect, high blood pressure, raised serum triglycerides On Abilify for three years. It never did anything to relieve the symptoms of the illness (predominantly visual hallucinations) but only added to them. I persisted because the side-effects were far more tolerable than those of previous medications, of which there had been many. Finally I had had enough and unilaterally stopped the Abilify two years ago. My blood pressure and serum lipids quickly returned to normal, and I can think clearly now. I have woken up from a 12 year-long medication-induced nightmare. M 57

2  Anxiety problems I really don't feel any positive results but what I do experience is sleeplessness and more anxiety at certain times(mainly around people) I think that these drug companies make studies to try and prove that the neurons in out brain aren't performing properly and they come up with these expensive drugs that don't really help most people. I have much better results and can live normally with my Alprazolam. They even had me on Cymbalta at the same time as Abilify just as trial and error. My problems are with anxiety disorders triggered by certain circumstances and not a problem with the way my neurons in my brain are firing. I would say that Abilify is just another expensive drug the pharmaceutical companies are trying to promote for greater income instead of positive results in patients. I don't think the box above got my dosage right. I was started out on 30mg twice a day and now take 60mg twice a day. I really feel that it is making me more depressed and anxious. M 43

2  Anxiety I have dizziness randonly, my eyes will just close when I am wide awake, gas, hahah, I used to be under 30 pounds of a normal teen but now I am 20 over. Confusion, I can't sleep but I am always tired, throat swelling, nervousness, tremors, and recently I have been diagnosed with a Slipped Disc. Just no. I HAVE to take it because if I don't I'll get sent to the 4th floor in Swedish American... So I am taking it until I am 18. F 17

2  Bipolar 1, GAD I was prescribed this for my bipolar 1 quite a while while ago (can't remember exact dose) and very soon thereafter had severe cramps in my hands and fingers (playing violin), As well as a coarse hand tremor e.g. trying to hold open the newspaper to read in the morning. I was unable to hand-write/address the parcels of things i had sold on ebay (items often needing to be sold because of my bipolar impulsive purchases!) due to severe tremor. The post office personnel were very helpful and filled in the forms for me from computer printouts I supplied. M 55

1  Bipolar disorder 2 I received an injection of ability about 7 months ago and I still have insomnia from it. My psychiatrist thinks it's mania but I was fine with sleep on my previous medication of invega. I don't know what to do anymore as lack of sleep is ruining my life. I immediately stopped taking the abilify injection after I developed insomnia but it's like something was permanently changed in me to stop sleep. Abilify ruined my life and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. F 40

1  Yes Ever since I've been taking anti-psychotic medicine, I've lost interest in movies, games, internet, or books. I've also lost interest in going out and socializing. After some research, I think It's the dopamine that's being blocked that's causing the problem. Dopamine is known to cause curiosity and reward driven learning in the brain. I don't know what to do, I've been tempted so many times to stop the pills but I'm afraid of going into a psychosis if I do. Is there a way to somehow reduce the dopamine in the brain without having to block the dopamine receptors ? How have you been doing ? Thanks. Keep in touch . M

As the day passes away I'm feeling better and better until I find myself a little better again. during the first hours after ingestion of the tablet i have to stand lying in the bed until I feel better, due to the fact that if i stand upright i feel a general malaise, headaches and a extreme malaise mainly in stomach, during this time, i can't eat anything. i have also loss of appetite for the rest of the day.  1  Bi-polar pacing, high blood sugar, foamy urine, severe thirst, fatigue, pancreatitis, kidney damage Please stop taking the Abilify immediately. My husband was prescribed Abilify and it almost killed him. He was hospitalized with severe pancreatitis for 10 days and then on home care hooked up to ivs for another 2 weeks. He is now diabetic and needs to take insulin shots 4 times a day. He is on a very strict low-fat no-sugar diet and may never have even a sip of alcohol ever again. His pancreas is permanently damaged. We are very lucky he is alive. Abilify is evil. Please do not take it. It will kill you. M 30
