SYNTHROID  (LEVOTHYROXINE SODIUM):  Levothyroxine is used to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). It replaces or provides more thyroid hormone, which is normally produced by the thyroid gland. Low thyroid hormone levels can occur naturally or when the thyroid gland is injured by radiation/medications or removed by surgery. Having enough thyroid hormone is important for maintaining normal mental and physical activity. In children, having enough thyroid hormone is important for normal mental and physical development. This medication is also used to treat other types of thyroid disorders (such as certain types of goiters, thyroid cancer). This medication should not be used to treat infertility unless it is caused by low thyroid hormone levels.   FDA Approval Date: 2002-07-24 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  hypothyroid I have had a positive experience iwth Synthroid. Sometimes I have hair shedding, but I feel fortunate that it is minor side effect. I tried the generic form, however it did not work for me. My dosage has been the same since the day I started it. I was hypothyroid and had the radioactive iodine. F 56 15 years

5  Hypothyroidism So minimal side effects that I can't recall what they are at the moment. I've found energy again. Synthroid saved my life, been taking it for almost 1 year now. I was feeling better within a week of taking it and continued to feel better and better every day for about the next 6 months. That's when it leveled off and I've been happy (and grateful) ever since. It took about a year or so to lose all of the weight I gained as a result of crummy thyroid. The weight just came right off after taking Synthroid. M 55 1 years

5  Hypothyroidism The only issue I have ever had was when different Doctors prescribed different thyroid meds. From Synthroid to generic Levothyroxine, back to Synthroid, then back to generic. My heart rate began jumping around, short of breath, sweating. Asked one of my Doctors when he refilled my prescription to put me on synthroid and keep me there. His response was "Levothyroxine is chemically the exact same thing as Synthroid". Maybe it is, but they act differently in my body. For me, they are not the same thing. I wound up in the hospital because of my heart rate jumping around. A Hospitalist over dosed me on Amiodarone and sent me into cardiogenic shock. My heart was working at only 20%, I was unconcious, my internal organs shut down, I had to be Trached, on oxygen, Cathitorzed, put on presser drips, fed through a tube in my nose, dialysis, I couldn't urinate, or poop. Was in the hospital almost 2 months. Doctors told my wife I would not be coming home. The Synthroid did NOT do this to me. The DIFFERENCE between .175 mcg of Synthroid, and .175 mcg of generic Levothyroxine caused the rapid heart and erratic heart rate issue, The Hospitalist overdosing me on Amiodarone to bring my heart rate down, almost killed me. As far as I know, that "Dr" is still practicing his version of medicine. When Doctors get the Synthroid dose correct, there are zero side effects for me. When not on enough, I have the typical low thyroid symptoms. When on too much, my heart rate goes wacky as described above. Doctors are supposed to titrate synthroid up, very, very slowly in the smallest dose available. It takes at least 30 days for this med to reach the full level for a specific dose in a person's system. Then up to 3 months before you feel the full effects of the medication. If your Doctor increases this med in too large of dose and/or increases it too quickly, it can kill you. Beware of wack job Doctors. They do exist, and all of their mistakes are in a cemetery.  5  Hypothyroid I didn't experience any side effects when using a therapeutic dosage. However, if you're taking too much, it soon becomes apparent because you begin experiencing the symptoms of hyperthyroidism. For me this drug has been successful in treating my hypothyroidism. It may also be beneficial in preventing migraines, if the headaches are associated with hypothyroidism. The drug even seems to help my overall mood as well. Lastly, it seems to help my insomnia quite a bit. F 38 10 years

5  Hair Loss / Low Thyroid Loss of hair has stopped. Regrowth has started!! My labs showed I was on the verge of being Hypo. I had been losing hair for about 4 years (100+ daily just in the shower). I thought I had had my thyroid checked, but I hadn't). So I was low, but normal - and my doc thought to try Synthroid. At first I tried Levo, and for 3 days my hair stopped falling out! Then it started again :( My doc and I decided to try the name brand Synthroid and see how that went. BEST THING I HAVE DONE!!! My hair falling out is about 15 hairs in the shower now, and I feel normal. My labs are still on the low side, but in normal range. I take it in the middle of the night ( I see a great difference when taking it on an empty stomach - so when I get up to use the bathroom while sleeping I just pop my daily pill). If you have any signs of being Hypo give the NAME BRAND a try! F 37 3 months

5  Hypothyroid I haved tried taking other generic types of medication to help my hypothyroidism but had dealt with some irritating side effects with those medications.  5  Thyroidectomies/Goiters When my medicine is too low I have hair loss, fatigue, memory issues, depression, sensitivity to cold, constipation, longer menstral cycles. When it is too high I have insomnia, hyperactivity, sensitivity to heat, diarrhea, shorter menstral cycles. When I was 13 I had the left half of my thyroid taken out with an egg size goiter. When I was 14 I had the rest of my thyroid and a quarter size goiter taken out. I have been on Synthyoid for more than half of my life and it works very well when taken as prescribed and and if you take it at the same time each day. F 28 15 years

5  Hypothyroid None After my first dose I felt GREAT. Better mood, less tired, less muscle aches. Day 2 was the first morning in a LONG time that I woke up NOT feeling the aches and pains of a 90 year old. I took my 2nd dose and have felt fantastic all morning. It is now early afternoon. Usually I would start feeling very tired around this time and need a nap. I really hope this improvement keeps up! I realize it has only been 2 days, but so far 75mcg seems to be working. I take it first thing in the morning with a full glass of water and then wait 30 minutes before having my coffee. If anything changes, I will post a new rating. So far so good ;) F 40 2 days
