ARAVA  (LEFLUNOMIDE):  This medication is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, a condition in which the body's defense system (immune system) fails to recognize the body as itself and attacks the healthy tissues around the joints. Leflunomide helps to reduce the joint damage/pain/swelling and helps you to move better. It works by weakening your immune system and decreasing swelling (inflammation).   FDA Approval Date: 1998-09-10 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  RA/Lupus I have been taking Arava going on four months now. I noticed immediately the change in bowel habits. I like this however due to how severely constipated I usually am. I actually feel like I go like a noreal person now. I'm starting to notice a bit of hairloss. Not a lot but concerned it could get worse. Im curious of anyones experience with the hairloss part of it. No other side effects so far. I still have joint pain. F 43 1 days

3  RA I've only been on Arava for 6-7 days, so hard to tell if it will work yet or not. First day, I took right before bed. Made my asthma active. Since, I've been taking around 1pm & that hasn't happened again. Side effects now are mainly just worsened aching and sharp pains in my joints, hands especially. I'm hoping the weight loss side effect will kick in. I could stand to lose about 5-10 lbs! :) F 50 7 days

3  Osteoarthritis The worst side effect has been the hair loss. My Dr. put me on 1 mg of folic acid to help stop the hair loss, which seemed to help for a short time and then the hair started falling out again. I actually have a spot that has stopped growing. And, just recently my arthritis symptoms came back. My Dr. wanted to up my dose, but I decided to get off of it. I am now taking 2 mg folic acid and 10 mg Biotin, I hope this works to get my hair back.. F 45 4 months

3  PA Diarrhea, some tingling hands/feet, some stomach cramps, high liver blood results, much fatigue, short breathed, dizziness Started on 20mg/day, now down to 10mg/2nd-day. Am getting constant bad test results (although not usually extreme) with my liver, one time I had to stop taking for 1 week to bring liver blood tests down. Swelling has decreased and pain is less, however still very stiff and extra joints continue to flair. The diarrhea was bad at the start but after reducing dose has settled. I am in 2 minds as to whether this has been a good experience but when I think about how I was and where I was going, I suppose it has helped. I do not think I will be able to continue with my liver results, wait and see. I hear that the next stronger meds have even worse side effects. M 44 8 months

3  PS Arthritis Headaches, loss of taste, itching around ankles and waist, mild stomach cramps. I'm taking the generic version 20 mg daily and 5mg Prenisone daily along with Enbrel 50mg once a week. Diagnosed with PsA 3 years ago. Initially put on MTX and increased to 20mg weekly but it stopped working. Until I started Enbrel about a year ago, pain and swelling throughout my body had made me almost cripple but I still had to work fulltime. I will reach the lifetime maximum insurance coverage of $15,000 for Enbrel very soon so doctor has started me on Arava in hopes that it will work as well as Enbrel. If it doesn't, I'm probably screwed until I reach Medicare age unless new affordable drugs come to market. M 56 14 days

3  RA & OA Loss of libido. Very red, itchy rash on sides of thumbs and wrists, where the bone is close to the skin. As I cut down on my dosage, the rash started to subside. The doctor was not familiar with this side effect, but told me to discontinue for the time being. F 72 3 years

3  RA Extreme fatigue, racing heart, stomach cramps, headache and loss of appetite I was on methotraxate for 15 months and I experienced extreme nausea (25mg), so my doctor switched me to Arava(20mg). I've been on Arava for about a week now, so it's too soon to tell if it helps for my RA. I'm not nauseus anymore, but I'm very, very tired. F 22 6 days

3  RA I have been on Arava for 2 months this time, the first time I took it was 2 years ago, I got so sick I lost alot of weight and my hair became very thin.....I decided to try it again after having reaction to humara and MTX no help...I started on 10mg a day , slight diarrhea and hair loss, then I increased to 20mg, I still had the hair loss and stomach upset, but by the end of the second month I had developed a horrible itchy rash, I bruised my skin scratching it is so bad, I am still trying to get rid of the rash... The Arava did seem to help the RA, however the rash is sooo itching I can't stand it and I guess will be back at square one yet again 41 2 months

3  R.A. fatigue, heart racing Not much relief yet. also on predisone....down from 10mg to 8 and trying to get off of it......weight gain. i think the racing heart is more due to predisone than arava, but not sure. I'm a recently diagnosed RA patient and I do not know how you others have lived with this kind of pain for so long. some days i wake up in screaming pain; other days are tolerable. how do you live with this?
