2  Bone loss, Osteopenia Dizzy at times. Fainting spells twice with a light shaking of my body like a seizure. I did not completely pass out but almost. Diarrhea for the past 3 months, abdominal pain and bloating and gas. Very uncomfortable. Once it dawned on me that the 3 months of diarrhea are probably not due to a GI Virus I had in mid October after all, I decided to stop the Evista tonight and will see if the symptoms all subside. It is a Catch 22 when you have thinning bones. But I can't continue to take it with these nasty GI side effects. F 62 6 months

2  osteoporosis, precancerous cervix Started Evista to help with Osteoporosis and keep some precancer situation from progressing in cervix and to keep from getting breast cancer.Almost 1month now and have experienced a nerve like pain in my shoulder - my bra strap is constantly hurting me, this same pain seems to travel to other areas at times. The other problem is my memory has gotten really bad at times - went to take a sailing exam and I knew the material before the test day, however when it came time to take the test I couldn't remember how to figure out the navigation questions - my mind was a total blank and I couldn't figure why. I have scattered days when I keep making simple mistakes and can't remember things. My vision is becoming fuzzy more and more when trying to focus and read - I drive for a living and this is not good. When I first started had very bad cramps in my legs - that seems to have subsided. Some days constipated and others diarrhea - never had that problem before. I also noticed my hands turned completely white - my skin tone was usually pink. I started to research this drug and read that some people started taking aspirin daily to counteract blood clots - so I am doing this also.Constantly bloated even though I am not eating much and drink lots of water. Sweating everyday all day long. The other morning after a good rest had a hard time getting out of bed and when I looked into the mirror my face seemed red, blotchy and very puffy.I searched for a site like this to see what other people are F 59 1 weeks

1  osteoporosis Incredible pain and discomfort in upper GI tract, esophagus. I never had this problem. Reading this site's side effects, I am stopping the Evista today. I'll call my MD re: alternatives. This is terrible! Also, bone pain in toes, fingers, and right hip . Thought I'd injured hip with exercise, but now I doubt that. Also, feeling bloated and have gained 3 pounds in 25 days, with more exercise than I'd been getting prior to starting the Evista. Will stick to bland foods until this pain subsides in my esophagus. My very first medication prescribed on a regular basis, and I'm stopping it NOW! I seriously feel like it will burn a hole through my stomach if I keep taking it. F 61 25 days

3   stabbing shoulder pain and cramping coincided with use of Envista; I can't say for sure they are related but there is NOTHING (not even painful, deep tissue massage) that alleviates the tightness and pain in my shoulders and neck. I have never experienced anything like this before. The night sweats and leg cramps are minor and tolerable compared to the shoulder business. Optimistic about slowing down bone loss (runs in family and hysterectomy 4 years ago probably did not help). I have plenty of history with my doctor and I know I can trust her selection but if this is a side effect, and it does not abate, I will ask for an alternative. F 55

1  osteoporosis runs in my family Didn't make the connection until I reached this site. Since starting Evista have had BAD leg cramps, problems with acid reflux, hair loss, problems swallowing food, and then WORSE.... trouble getting up from chairs and hardly able to go up or down stairs. MORE WORSE: numbness and stiffness in fingers to the point I can hardly write my name, hard to tie shoes or pick up dropped items. Having trouble peeling and cutting food, have taken two bad falls due to vertigo. Stopped taking Evista when I was planning to go on an extended car trip that involved sitting a lot. The side effects said that was bad. After reading these reports I will NOT go back on it. Ever. Dr. told me to take Boniva, but the side effects of THAT seem even worse! Will have to take my chances as I will NOT take any of these, again. How can 'doctors' prescribe these drugs without looking into the side effects more seriously? I feel ALL these complications in my life, are the result of taking this drug! F 79 4 years

2  osteopenia It was prescribed to take daily but I chose to take every other day instead; for past year I have in fact taken daily; I have very recently begun to experience the flwg: night sweats, ankles swelling, acid reflux and hair loss, none of which occurred before; have begun tapering off and will cease taking totally.  2  Osteopenia Weight Gain I have been taking Evista and also a calcium w/vit D suppliment. I have noticed that I have been gaining weight and just can't seem to lose it. Four months ago I was walking my dog and bent down to separate another dog from going after mine. I didn't fall I just twisted my ankle. Five days later I went to Urgent care and they told me that I broke the Fibular in the ankle. My question is why am I taking something that seems to make me gain weight and didn't really stop me from breaking a bone. Because of my weight my cholestrol has gone up, so I have to take Simvastian to get that down. I've talked to the doctor but he doesn't seem to agree with me. Eight years ago I broke my upper arm and that took close to two years to heal and I was on a different med than Evista. F 68 5 years

1  to prevent breast cancer, osteopero Leg pain, hip pain, visual disturbances, headaches, numbness, knee pain, restless legs, leg cramps My doctor prescribed this medication for me about 2003. Two years ago, I experienced what was called a "vascular event". Prior, I walked 3 miles everyday and was considered very healthy. I went numb from my waist down, can't to this day feel my feet, legs feel numb as well as my right arm. My doctor who prescribed it called right away and told me to get off of the Evista. My energy level is still very low. About two years before the "event" which they said was a spinal cord stroke, I started having symptoms which I attributed to my job as I'm on my feet all day. I was never asked about symptoms and when I said something it was ignored. My ankles started swelling. Now, I have retired. I still can't feel my feet and have horrible hip pain that is sometimes nauseating. I doubt at this point that the numbness will ever go away in my legs and torso. I am begging anyone who has taken this medication or is taking it to get off of it as soon as possible. F 64 8 years

1  DCIS Horrible joint pain, depression, hot flashes, headaches I took Evista for 14 days and was in tears. It made me so depressed. I also had terrible hot flashes. I spent hours in front of a fan to just try to cool down. I became very depressed and was not able to be the mom and wife I need to be. The joint pain was unbearable. My shoulders hurt so bad that I could not braid my daughter's hair. There were several nights that I couldn't make it up the stairs due to hip pain. My wrists and hands hurt so much that I could no longer sew. I have been off for 3 weeks now and still suffer from joint pain. I am hoping it will dissipate, but thought it would by now. The hot flashes are gone, as are the headaches. I would strongly advise all those that are considering taking Evista, consider the side effects. They are very real and cause one to feel much worse. It effects every day life. F 41 14 days

1  osteoporosis high fracture risk Hot flashes, severe leg, foot, toe cramps weight gain, headache, palpitations, increased muscle and joint pain, general feeling of being unwell Two years ago tried Fosamax then Actonel, quit for side effects of leg cramps and muscle pain. With no osteoporosis med my bone density has worsened.PCP prescribed Evista. Beginning 1/1/2012 I tried it for 10 days, and quit for the side effects named on the list.I have RA I inject Enbrel for, and have fibromyalgia so muscle and joint pain already exist. I have suffered for years with nightly leg cramps now that quinine is no longer available. I don't need to aggravate these issues with Evista. Since stopping Evista side effects lessened and I had returned to base line. I called PCP who said symptoms were due to my brain messing with me. He said try it again, then if the same thing happens he agrees I can't take it. He has insulted my intelligence after being my PCP 25 years, but I tried again for 4 days, symptoms returned. I have not called him yet, but plan to seek the advice of a naturopathic doctor who knows better than to insult me, and also knows something about alternatives to pharmaceuticals. I work full time in a medical care environment. Beware of health care professionals who stop listening to you. The symptoms are real, not your brain messing with you! F 66 14 days

1  osteoporosis nearly all of the terrible side effects described by other users. Horrible! I have been tapering off of Evista very slowly over years and now take it once every 6 days. At the end of five days I become anxiety ridden and this continues on the day I take it. The day after I take it I am depressed and the second day I become totally taken over by anxiety and depression. The four days after that I am better emotionally but have body aches, etc. PLEASE can someone tell me how they managed to get off of this drug. Did anyone use any hormone therapy.  2  Osteoporosis I started having headaches after about 30days on Evista that would last all day long. I would put an ice pack on my eyes to get to sleep at night, and by morning the headache would be gone. Then I would take the Evista around 6-6:30am and by 9:30am my headache would be back. Also found my teeth were hurting like it was my sinuses, hands were swollen in the morning, had gained a few pounds, and I had no energy and was very grumpy and kinda foggy feeling! Well I did not take the Evista this morning and so far no headache and it is 10:45am. Teeth are still bothering me, still feel foggy and tired. Hopefully this too shall pass. I don't plan on returning to Evista-I can't take the headaches. I will research more on other ways to treat osteoporosis. F 53 2 months

1  Osteoporosis I tried. I started Evista on a vacation so I could really monitor the effects. I found my digestive system stopped working (constipated) even though I was using bran, drinking lots of water and exercising right after. I want long-term but it's uncomfortable and it appears to get worse with use. So I'm going to stop it, and discuss it with my doctor mid-January.  1  Oteopenia Severe brain fog. I can't concentrate or remember things. Frequent headaches, digestive upset, fatigue and daily hot flashes. I have extreme difficulty keeping up at work. Things that were easy are now difficult. My short term memory is poor. This all started in the last two months. I have been taking Evista for about 3 months. It didn't immediately occur to me that Evista could be the cause as the problems didn't start until a month after starting Evista. After reading the reviews I am stopping the drug immediately.  3  DEXA scan showed bone loss Had gastric bypass. Two years later had parathyroids removed and started taking Synthroid. Also had Dexa Scan which showed bone loss compared to previous year. At this time my FSH levels showed that I was menopausal. Started taking Evista. Hot flashes stopped after a few months. The third year's scan was almost back to normal. Started having problems about year 5. Started with leg cramps and foot cramps across the top of my feet, sometimes during the night, other times several times during the day. This last year has been the worst. I have muscle cramps after setting for any length of time and my legs feel "bow-legged" with the calves burning and pain in the ankles. I can't stand for any length of time and any exercise I try to do (such as leg lifts or gentle walking) result in additional pain for over a week. I have been experiencing edema in my ankles and knees and complained to my doctor who stated to stay away from salt. I asked about the Evista and he stated that the symptoms would have appeared within the first 2 years of taking this Rx, not 6 years later! I think that the symptoms I am experiencing have been slowly ongoing and I just found excuses for their causes until now that they are painful beyond reason. I have stopped taking Evista for the last three days and today I was able to stay on my feet much of the day. My ankles are slightly swollen but not the "tree-trunks" they have been at the end of the day. There have been a few mornings that I have had swollen ankles before getting out of bed, which is unusual. I will talk to my doctor about just taking the vitamin/mineral regime and to test for any change in the DEXA scan. F 60 7 years

2  breast cancer prevention Substantial hair loss; depression; anger issues; hostility; diminished visual acuity; forgetfulness; minor leg cramps I thought I was doing well on Evista---I'm not postmenopausal & experienced no hot flashes or trouble sleeping. I have noticed that my hair is falling out to the point where it is becoming a problem. After having children I've dealt with post-partum depression and have taken meds for that (which don't really help) but now am wondering if Evista is contributing to the depression & anger issues. I'm very forgetful, whereas I used to have the memory of an elephant, not since I started Evista though. I meet with my doctor next week and think I'll get off this stuff. I'm too young to go bald!  4  osteopenia / osteoporosis Hot flashes It has been several years (maybe 4?) since I took this drug for osteopenia. I quit after a while, but it was helping me. Now, after about 3 years without anything, I find I have osteoporosis. Endocrinologist wants me on Fosamax, but I'm scared of it.  3  Atypical ductal hyperplasia The first year was very difficult to adjust to. I had severe hot flashes and sweating that were almost intolerable. The body aches were bad too. I felt like I had the flu most the time.. Weight gain of 20 lbs. Not to mention poor sleep. I have annual breast MRI's and mammograms and am being followed by an oncologist for my one time ADH. I've been on this medication for 3 years, with desire by my Doctor to be on it for 5years. My husband is a statistics guru and he crunched the numbers risk of breast cancer, vs risk of stroke, embolism (which scares me even more). Due to the constant hot flashes, body aches, weight gain and feeling blah I have decided to stop it after taking it for 3 years. I'm not letting fear make my decision, just what works for me. The medicaiton does make me feel terrible, I've been on it for 3 years, I will continue with my annual breast MRI and mammograms. I'm more concerned with the stroke risk and am tired of feeling like crap (body aches, flashing all the time, weight gain and poor sleep). I can always change my mind but I'm glad I finally made a decision that is best for me. F 56 3 years

1  Osteoporosis In the middle of the night after taking my first Evista , I woke up with cramping in my legs. Very unusual for me. The second night I woke up with terrible pain in my legs and a sharp stabbing cramp in my one thigh. I also noticed a suttle heaviness in my chest. The third day, the pain in my chest became worse..and I took my B.P. I run a very low blood pressure and it was 135/85. I immediately went to the hospital. I went into tachycardia, 130, in the E.R. They admitted me to the Cardiac Care unit. Several tests later, including an echo and stress test...and a million blood tests...Ekg's etc...all were normal. I stopped taking Evista and I still have the pain in my chest, which I now attribute to Heartburn/Hiatal Hernia. The Evista, no doubt did this to me. I mentioned it to three doctors and NONE of them said anything except to stop taking it. The symptoms are very slowly starting to go away. A nightmare. I wouldn't take this drug if I was paid a zillion dollars. Evista does not list increased heart rate or palpitations in their side effects. They need to. And they need to list heartburn as the other osteoporosis drugs do. F 57 3 days

1  osteopenia Severe pain in my left shoulder. Unbelievable! I couldn't move my arm up or down - was ill for a few days - took Aleve, but that didn't touch the pain. I didn't realize the connection until my samples ran out - was refilling the prescription and since there is no generic, the cost is unaffordable at $130.00 for only one month. No thanks - I am drinking 3-4 glasses of milk a day and do take a supplement of calcium along with a vitamin. That will have to do it. Food is the best thing for us anyway. Forget the drugs! I also take thyroid medication, and Evista needs to be taken 12 hours after - not good. My arm is almost 100% better now, so I realize that it was the Evista that hurt me so much. Never again!  1  Osteoporosis I am convinced that I will have an allergic reaction to any drug that's supposed to help bones. After the first Evista pill, I started to itch and with the second pill the itch became nearly unbearable. Head to toe--felt like someone was sticking me with needles. It's 5 days later and I am still experiencing itching. I had a small rash as well. Also BP went sky high, had headache, cough and shooting pains in my knees. I am glad that I only took two pills but wonder how long these side effects will continue. I have read that the half life is 27.7 hours but don't believe that is true. Tried other meds: Fosomax--instant flu symptoms and horrible headaches. Missed a week from work before I found out the drug was making me feel this way. Took Actonel for 13 months. Then I think it tried to kill me. BP sky high, 5-6 muscle spasms per night in both legs and feet, chest pain, one urinary tract infection after another, diarrhea. Went to two doctors to treat bladder/bowl problems and no problems could be found--because it was the drug all along. F 64 2 days

1  Diagnosed with LCIS Extreme upper body muscle aches; restless leg syndrome; a feeling of "not being connected" or confused; Tired; felt like I just wanted to stay in bed or at the end of the day, I could hardly wait to get home and go to bed; depression and constant hot flashes. I stopped taking Evista and immediately the following day I no longer had the upper body aches and within a week I felt like my old self. I will not take this drug again and I may try the second drug that was an option: Tamoxifen. M 63 21 days

1  osteopenia I am very physically active, a runner for 30 years and was completing upper body work with 8lb weights. After taking evista for about 3 months, I noticed deep aching pain in my upper arms and shoulders, along with leg cramps at night. A few months later, the pain in my shoulders and upper arms caused me sleeplessness and increased difficulty raising my arms over my head. Additionally, I could no longer lift my hand weights due to decreased strength in my arms - I stopped taking the drug!! It is now about 4 months later, and I still have some pain in my upper arms, particularly with deep aching pain during the night. However, the strength is returning, but not yet to the "pre-evista" level. I would recommend extreme caution if you are considering this drug, and stop it sooner than I did if you are experiencing side effects. F 54 6 months

1  Osteo & breast cancer prevention It's been soooo many years now. Over time, I've noticed I had problems getting & staying asleep (still do), 30 lb. weight gain in the last 20 years (middle) - fatigue, lack of energy, anger issues, depression, shortness of breath, 3 root canals in the last 8 years, numerous bronchial infections and pneumonia (missed lots of work)and in the last few months have had tingling, numb feeling in legs and feet. I am borderline diabetic so I thought that was my issue with the numbness, etc. I thought all of the above were issues about aging, etc. and was living a really poor quality life as far as my health was concerned, until I got very lucky and opened up this website. I HIT THE MOTHERLODE! I am NOT ALONE! I talked to my pharmacist about all my concerns in taking this drug after reading all the comments here. She said I wouldn't experience any huge health ramifications if I stopped taking EVISTA abruptly. Although she did say, given the length of time I've been on it, I may want to "wean" myself off ot it. I haven't taken EVISTA for 2 days now and I'm not sure if I will take another one of these horrible pills. I think I am going "cold turkey!" Why oh why did I stay on this horrible drug for so many years?....? MY doctor(s) recommended it over & over again and I believed and trusted them. Doing some research now (including this website) I have found there is a huge kick'back from the drug companies for doctors that prescribe it. SHAME ON THEM!! What have I done to myself over the years??? Who knows?!*! I don't know if I will ever be back to normal again, (what is normal?) but hopefully, after cleansing my body & system of this horrible drug EVISTA - I am praying that some of my health problems will have disappeared. Must mention too, EVISTA is very expensive!!! I will keep this website posted of my progress or my status. I wish I had all this info when I started taking this drug, if so, I never would have taken it and certainly would have questioned my doctor(s) about its supposed "BENEFITS!" I am going to take extra Vit(s) C & D, along with exercise and maybe a better diet, too. EVISTA IS BAD STUFF!!!! F 64 21 years
