AROMASIN  (EXEMESTANE):  This medication is used to treat certain types of breast cancer (such as hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer) in women after menopause. Exemestane is also used to help prevent the cancer from returning. Some breast cancers are made to grow faster by a natural hormone called estrogen. Exemestane decreases the amount of estrogen the body makes and helps to slow or reverse the growth of these breast cancers. Exemestane is usually not used in women of childbearing age.   FDA Approval Date: 1999-10-21 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Breast Cancer Extreme fatigue, lack of motivation, sleeplessness, headache, some finger & wrist pain, forgetful, no motivation, weight gain. This is the worst. I cannot take it anymore. Thought I was crazy until I read posts. Saw a sleep dr and he said it was Aromasin. Why didn't my oncologist tell me? I don't want to take drug anymore. Want my life back. F 64 10 months

1  Post double masectomy Extreme fatigue, lack of motivation, no interest in anything, poor eating habits, sleeplessness, mood changes, thinning hair (after losing all my hair). This medication is worse than Arimidex. But, Arimidex didn't prevent cancer in my left breast. Maybe it helped in the right, but who knows, F 64 11 months

1  IDC Breast Cancer (T2, N0, M0) Horrible medication! And it is NOT approved by the FDA. My advice; DON'T take it, it's pure poison. The BEST anti-hormone therapy that is rarely prescribed because doctors haven't researched it well is: RALOXIFENE (tradename Evista) taken together with OMACOR 1000 mg. The suggested dose is one 25mg pill of Raloxifene a day along with one Omacor softgel (omega 3). I only take half a pill of Raloxifene 12.5 mg. It also builds your bones. NOTE: You should be ER+ & PR + and POSTmenopausal for this drug to work well for you. It should ONLY be taken with EXTREME CAUTION by those with advanced stage Breast Cancer (NOT those with DCIS or Early Stage breast cancer). F 56 2 months

1  DCIS stage I 1999, new DCIS 2015 UTI, constant feeling of UTI & yeast infections, joint pain-worse in thumbs, severe weight gain, swelling in hands, headaches, memory problems, I tried Arimidex first for 2 months with horrible results. I quit taking that for 2 months & went on Aromasin for 10 days. I was treated for a UTI, but the feeling of the UTI never went away. Still have pain going to bathroom, have to use cream for yeast infection every day or pain comes back. I stopped taking Aromasin & I hope this feeling will go away. These AIs are horrible. I will not take again F 63 10 days

1  breast cancer I just wanted to comment on the lady who posted on 1-9-17. You are so right about this drug messing up the bladder and urethra. I posted about this months ago how I was on antibiotics with no relief. I believe I also had interstitual cystitis. It was months before I felt any relief but eventually all the bladder issues have gone away. The only side effects I am still having are in my fingers/joints and one elbow. Some days I can't open anything and fingers will lock up and hurt and other days not so bad. One doctor said joint and another said ligament. I believe the joints have been damaged and I am still hoping this will clear up some day. You are so right about needing estrogen, even a little. I have limited use of my hands/fingers at times and have to ask co-workers to open bottles often or carry heavy items. All the other sides effects I had are gone. If you would like to contact me, please do and put aromasin in the subject line. Good luck! F 61 2 months

1  Stage 1 Breast Cancer I was diagnosed in July 2013. Actually took AIs for 2 years.I experienced Trigger Thumb (rt hand), joint pain, mental fog, insomnia, hair loss, bladder pain, basically you name it I had it. Switched to other two Aromatase Inhibitors with no better results. Went to Dr in August 2014 and told her I could not tolerate any longer and was taken off of them. Not to mention hugh weight gain. I have researched these drugs and found that they affect your immune system. I now have prolapse of rectum (through vagina wall), prolaspse of uterus, narrowing of vagina and constant bladder and urethra pain. Your female parts need estrogen to function properly. I was just diagnosed with Lichen Simplex Chronus in perineum area. Had two punch biopsies in this area. These drugs are wicked. Now my doctors are talking about a complete hysterectomy including ovaries. We have been trying premarin cream to alleviate some of the dryness associated with estrogen deprivation. I am only to use a small amount in perineum area and by urethra. I have been on Antibiotics for 2 1/2 years now. So tired from bladder pain and by the way also had biopsy of bladder. Negative. Just inflammation. Stays that way. I think it may be Institial Cystitis. All other aches and pains went away when I quit the Aromatase Inhibitors. F 56 10 months

1  Stage 2 ductal carcinoma Painful & achy joints, even finger, wrist, thumb pain. UTIs, although I'm sure my oncologist would disagree with me re: medicine as a cause. My brain feels like it is in a permanent fog state. Was on anastrozole for short time. Joint pain some days almost unbearable. I would sit on the sofa with heating pad. Dr then gave me a hiatus for about two months. Pain got better but didn't go away. Dr then started me on Exemestane (Aromasin). Been on about two months. Had pretty bad joint pain early, then subsided. Only had joint pain periodically. Have noticed lately that discomfort is coming more & more frequently. Had UTI about 2 1/2 months ago & now I have another one. It's weird, but, there are days when I feel normal when I go to the BR. Then like today, I'm miserable feeling pressure everytime I go to the BR. It feels like I have a constant bladder infection. Can anyone else identify with these symptoms? F 67 1 days

1  Stage 2 Breast Cancer with no node Hot flashes, numbness in arms, nausea, reflux, extreme fatigue and shortness of breath along with anxiety. This is my 3rd cancer drug and the cancer or radiation was not as bad as these drugs. I feel sure if the doctors tried them they would pitch them in the trash can. F 67 4 months

1  breast cancer joint pain bladder pain urethra pain hot flashes ear problem leg cramps I posted below but wanted to update my situation. I am not going to take any more aromasin. My family doctor has put me on 3 different antibiotics saying I have kidney infection but no relief. I read where estrogen is needed by the bladder to keep it healthy and I believe I have interstitial cystitis. My family doctor prescribe oxybutynin for the bladder spasms and it has helped and I also bought some AZO which helps too but from what I read this could be permanent. I feel worse since taking aromasin. I felt better after my mastectomy and wish I had never gone on aromasin. Since the other drugs all affect estrogen I will not be going on anything else. I have been off aromasin about 2 months now. The leg cramps and ear problems are gone and the hot flashes are less but I still have horrible bladder/urethra irritation and joint pains in one elbow and hands. F 60 45 days

1  Stage I/II Breast Cancer The oncologist first prescribed Arimidex, which I only took for 4 months due to the severe joint pain. I could barely get in and out of my car. I was then prescribed Aromasin and tried it for about 18 months and the hip pain became so bad I could not sleep and my cholesterol was almost 300. So I took a six month vacation from the drug. My cholesterol is now well under 200 and the hip pain is almost gone. While I understand that the first five years after a cancer diagnosis are very important, if I continue to take this drug I will end up on a statin and pain medicine. Taking those will only cause even more side effects. I am talking with a naturopath to look for some alternative ways to prevent any future occurrence of cancer, there has to be a better way than this drug. F 62 2 years

1  breast cancer Hot flashes, joint pain in hands sometimes so bad I could not use fingers which I need to do my job. One elbow joint pain. Bladder pain and pressure like an infection but it wasn't an infection. Antibiotics did not help. This drug is horrible for me. My oncologist is NOT happy I stopped it and refuse to try it again. I felt like I had a bladder infection but antibiotics did not clear it up. Since I work in a lab I did my own urine tests and could see I had bladder irritation signs but no infection. About 3 weeks after stopping the drug the bladder symptoms are gone. My knuckles in my hand hurt badly and I have trouble using my fingers and they "lock"up sometimes. I also have one elbow that hurts. I talked to my oncologist nurse today who said I can go back on the meds since I have been off them a month and the hand pain is NOT from aromasin. I am still having hot flashes. I believe the drug is out of my system but the side effects and damage the drug causes is not gone which is why the hot flashes and pain is still there. I told the nurse I will not take anything until the pain is less. I know my body and I know from another drug I took years ago it can take MONTHS to get over the side effects and damage from the drug. I wonder if it worth trying something else. I was given a 4% chance of cancer returning with the drug and 8% without. I had a mastectomy and no chemo or radiation needed. F 60 50 days

1  HER2 +, Estrogen + Stage 1A breast I thought I was losing my.mind, couldn't understand why I started having extreme joint pain in my hands, then in my hips & ankles. I am extremely frustrated that their was no forewarning by my oncologist. I have been taking this pill for only 3.5 weeks. I played soccer & worked out during chemo, yet I almost feel worse now than during chemo. F 44 4 weeks

1  Stage 1 breast cancer Severe muscle and joint pain, swelling in my right hand, fatigue and depression, insomnia, headache and brain fog. Pain worse when laying down and mornings. No energy and no desire to do anything, decrease in libido, more tearful and emotional than usual. Not worth it!!!! I took Arimidex for a few months with same type side effects, when I stopped taking it the side effects subsided. But after just one month of Aromasin I stopped taking it and 3 months later still have severe pain. Does anyone know how long this will continue? I am done! F 56 30 days

1  Intraductal Papilloma w/Dysplacia Although I was not diagnosed with BC, I'm high risk since my mom is a bc survivor. I've been on this drug going on 9 months. At first I didn't notice really any side effects except fatigue and that was after about a month. A couple months later I started developing insomnia; joint pain in wrists, hips, ankles and feet. After about 4 months on this drug, I developed trigger finger in both thumbs. There were days where it became exceptionally painful to walk because the bottom of my feet felt like they were on fire. When I went for my follow-up to see my onc, I told her about the se's and as many of you have already experienced, my onc was very dismissive about my complaints which I resented. At first I wasn't having any issues with weight gain because I'm a T1 diabetic who carefully watches what I eat but suddenly in less than 1 months' time I've gained almost 14 lbs! I'm also going through horrible mood swings to the point I'm either crying uncontrollably or I'm feeling something akin to 'roid rage' all within a span of a couple minutes. Between the sudden weight gain and the extreme mood swings I am going to see my onc and tell her I want off this drug. As a Type 1 Diabetic I got very sick in Aug 2015 and didn't realize I was in Diabetic Ketoacidosis and that by the time I was in ICU I'd had 2 mild heart attacks. My Diabetes is a bigger threat to me right now than the chance of bc plus I don't know why the onc would put me on this drug given I don't have bc but high risk. I don't like this 'one size fits all approach'. Sure glad to find this website and have the kind of validation I need to show my doctor this is not 'all in my head'. My best to each and every one of you. F 56 9 months
