SUBOXONE  (BUPRENORPHINE HYDROCHLORIDE; NALOXONE HYDROCHLORIDE):  This medication contains 2 medicines: buprenorphine and naloxone. It is used to treat opioid (narcotic) dependence/addiction. Buprenorphine belongs to a class of drugs called mixed opioid agonist-antagonists. Buprenorphine helps prevent withdrawal symptoms caused by stopping other opioids. Naloxone is a narcotic antagonist that blocks the effect of opioids and can cause severe opioid withdrawal when injected. Withdrawal is less likely when naloxone is taken by mouth, dissolved under the tongue, or dissolved on the inside of the cheek. It is combined with buprenorphine to prevent abuse and misuse (injection) of this medication. This combination medication is used as part of a complete treatment program for drug abuse (such as compliance monitoring, counseling, behavioral contract, lifestyle changes).   FDA Approval Date: 2002-10-08 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Oxy addiction None Was using oxy (approx. 60mg/day) for about 6-7 yrs. Took Sub (started 12mg/day never more) w/o too much of an issue. Started cutting down and just kept going until I was down to about 1mg - 3x/day. I kept 1mg pcs on me and one day I realized it had been 3 days without taking and that was it. 6 years

5   Sleep disturbances at first, constipation with prolonged use. I used this to transition off of high doses of Rx narcotics (400mg per day) used for pain control. The narcs just were not working anymore. The suboxone is a miracle drug! Very mild withdrawal symptoms (slight anxiety, restlessness) for a couple days, the 3rd day I felt great. And it’s fantastic for pain control! I’m so happy I tried this and finally got off of the ever-increasing need for narcotics. F 45 6 months

5  Oxy addiction Have used subs several times to get off heavy opioid addiction. It stops the withdrawals. I am able to save so much money not using and my quality of life improves completely. It does make me tired feeling even though I sleep 10-15 hours straight but for me that sure beats the insomnia and RLS I'd experience without it. I believe this is a great tool to use to get off drugs and get your life straight. The extra sleep is what your body needs as it repairs itself so don't be discouraged by that. Allow plenty of time for tapering off… even taking down to 1/4 then 1/8 for several weeks. Then every other day. Soon you will not need to take it at all. Lately people are saying this is trading one drug for another but this one is legal, safe and allows you to get back on the right track. Time varies for everyone but for me I can be on and taper off within a year. Any quicker and I go back to drugs almost immediately so allow yourself time. M 43 8 months

5  Opioid replacement None Suboxone has been transformation. I encourage anyone to talk to their doctor about starting this treatment. It has changed my life for the better in every way. However, the patient must WANT to genuinely start treatment and be committed to it. The first six months were the most difficult to adhere to but after that it was smooth sailing. I take it once daily and go on with my life. Just brilliant. M 36 3 years

5  Opiate/Opioid Addiction I have absolutely no desire or craving to use & abuse any opiate, or pain killer (nor even benzo) since being on Suboxone. And I quit suddenly on my very first day of Sub therapy - NO withdrawals or discomfort. Suboxone does its job extremely well. I'm living and succeeding again. The only side effects from once-a-day Suboxone are: slow urination and constipation. No heavy sedation, but if I sit still too long I might doze off. Because my insurance fully covers the Suboxone therapy its totally a Win-Win deal: $8 per month refill co-pay, vs. $400/month chasing down my former drug of choice. M 52 2 months

5  Opiate Addiction I've been on suboxone for just about five months now. When i first started taking suboxone I had so much energy. I couldnt sleep because I had so much energy, I just wanted to clean or work out. I also noticed I wasn't hungry anymore. Within the first two weeks of starting suboxone I lost 20 Pounds. Within another month and a half I lost another 20 pounds. I'm not complaining about the weight loss but it worries me because I'm not trying to lose weight anymore and the weight is still falling off me. Another thing I've noticed, when I sleep I have very bad aches in my bones so im constantly tossing and turning. Its really annoying. F 24 5 months

It has been a life saver. I was taking 800-1200 OxyContin daily I was on oxy for 10-12 years for extreme chronic pain. The sub also takes away the desire to consume opiates & alcohol. M 58 4.3 years

5  Opiate addiction The only side effect that I've had to deal with is that I sweat a lot more then I did. I was a opiate user 4 years it started when I broke my foot twice in one year. When I was at my worse I spent 2500 dollars on pills in a month so I knew I needed help and I started to detox on my own cause I didn't know anything and I wasn't going into a treatment center no way what' so ever then a friend called and I told him how I was doing he said he had this pill called suboxone so I took a little piece and I started to feel better and by the end of the next day I went to a doc to get on it myself and I can say that with out suboxone I would either be dead or in jail cause I was on a really bad path but I found this drug and it SAVED my life and if I have to be on it for a long time or the rest of my life then so be it M 4 years

5  Opiate dependence Fatique Constipation I hit rock bottom from my addiction. I was shooting up anything to make me feel better. I had no job, no roof over my head, no car or license, non-custodial rights to my daughter. My family wouldn't talk to me and my bank terminated my accounts. I remember only having my purse, my duffle bag of clothes and only a few dollars to my name and not knowing where I was going to sleep that night. We won't go into my criminal background, jail, rehab or the degrading, shameful things I wish I could forget. Since I've been on Suboxone, my life has done a complete 180°! I've gotten everything back. I own my own car, I have 50% custody of my daughter after fighting back (because I straitened out my life). I've been pre-approved for a mortgage I'll share with my daughter, fiancé and 11 month old bundle of joy. I've cleared my criminal record and don't even have SR22 on my license anymore. I work as a professional dental assistant and make acquaintances and even friends with some lawyers, police officers, entrepreneurs, doctors, politicians....All sorts of people I never thought I would cross paths with in my prior life. People who know me now would be shocked to know of my past or even know that I am taking Suboxone. There's a lot of speculation and opinions about this drug, but it changed my life for the better times ten!! Who knows where my life would be if I hadn't made this life altering decision!!  5  heroin I first have to say after a 14 yr shooting heroin addiction,I've tutored my body, soul, and mind, that being said I've never in all those years kept a needle as full add I could get it off heroin out of my arms, hands, legs, feet, toes, stomach, breasts, neck, face, and I'm sure I'm forgetting places,so side effects of the suboxone are so far, headaches, severe edema in my legs abd hands, worse now than when I was using,,,mild constipation I will say the pros far out way the cons,in fifty some days,I've gotten my career back, was promoted to manager in a few days of showing that I was willing to stay at work and not run out to my car or the nasty public bathroom too shoot up,my boss is willing to put time, money, and energy into me,I feel like a human being again, not a trashy floor mat,I LIVE& LOVE my new life,it's unbelievable, maybe I was just finally ready, the best part of this experience so far has been helping someone else,I dropped off(annoynmous)at detox, first time I've ever helped anyone else, just to help not for the recognition,,,anyway I'm just converted about the headaches, abd weight gain w the edema,I've had the headaches and edema b4 on 235mg of methadone,I do have hep c,and all of the superficial veins maybe from surface to 1/2 in.under my skin are collapsed out just tore up,I feel like I'm carrying around if guess about 20 to 30 lbs of water, idk what to do,yes I take two dieteretics a day?
