LIPITOR  (ATORVASTATIN CALCIUM):  Atorvastatin is used along with a proper diet to help lower "bad" cholesterol and fats (such as LDL, triglycerides) and raise "good" cholesterol (HDL) in the blood. It belongs to a group of drugs known as "statins." It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol made by the liver. Lowering "bad" cholesterol and triglycerides and raising "good" cholesterol decreases the risk of heart disease and helps prevent strokes and heart attacks. In addition to eating a proper diet (such as a low-cholesterol/low-fat diet), other lifestyle changes that may help this medication work better include exercising, losing weight if overweight, and stopping smoking. Consult your doctor for more details.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-04-07 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  control cholestoral None that I can directly attribute to it. It is possible some minor pains and other occasional feelings like numbness are related, but they are occasional and in NO way can be linked based on my personal knowledge. I am almost 70 now...who knows what may be causing little things here and there? My cholesterol is under control (BUT I can't even be sure this is due to meds..) and I am pretty healthy overall. I have been an active exerciser for 30 years. M 20 years

5  High LDL and total cholestrol Slight headaches. Need to check with neurologist is reading is now too low. Have a cerebral aneurysm. Taken from 243 to 129. LDL from 163 to 56 and HDL from 70 to 59. Cannot risk a hemorrhage at this point. Will be checking with Neurologist this week. When taking Liptor you need to supplement with K2 and CoQ10 200mg each to avoid muscles and joint problems. F 62 1 months

5  Cholesterol Had muscle pain, issues when first started, but I added Pilates to my Cardio program and between the cardio and Pilates, this is virtually gone. I have been noticing that I dehydrate much quicker than I ever have. I have actually woken up in the middle of the night and my mouth is completely dry. I am so happy with the results that I will do whatever it takes and whatever I need to do this right. F 55

5  High cholesterol (260) No side effects My doctor (conservative and top-rate) says that taking Lipitor is a "no brainer". All advantages, no disadvantages. And for me that's true. My cholesterol fell to 160 and I've had no side effects. My husband and I buy 20 mg tablets and use pill-splitter to cut in half. Costs much less! F 69 5 years

5  high cholestrol/triglycerides headaches, face and scalp tingling, scalp itching, vibrating under scalp, tinnitus, twitching mouth, insomnia, vivid dreams, difficult swallowing/choking, swollen tongue, memory loss, confusion, stomach pain, left foot pain 59 year old female with diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and high cholestrol/triglycerides. Neurologist, cardiologist, and internist stated my symptoms were not all related to Lipitor side effects. After trying Zocor, Provachol, Zetia and Crestor, Lipitor seemed to be the lessor of the evils with regard to side effects. However, due to heart problems, cardiologist gradually increased the Lipitor dosage from 10mg to 40mg. Symptoms have been gradual over the years with recent face and scalp problems diagnosed as trigeminal neuralgia after MRI ruled out tumor or MS. After reading your comments regarding Liptior, I have decided to reduce the dosage from 40mg to 20mg for a week to see if this relieves the most recent symptoms. If improvement is noted, then I will contact my doctor for a further reduction in the dosage to determine if other symptoms abate. I appreciate all the feedback on this medication and will keep you posted on my progress. F 59 11 years

5  high cholesterol none that I'm aware of My total cholesterol was 300 prior to taking Lipitor. The Lipitor (along with healthy eating) has brought that number down to 165, so I am very happy. I have had none of the side effects that others talk about. F 51 4 years

5  lower chol. due to heart attack While taking 10 mg I have experienced no adverse side effects. It was only when increased to 20mg/day that I experienced increased bone and muscle pain. I have been taking Lipitor 10mg per day since 1997 with no adverse effects. The only problem I experienced was when one DR. increased my dose to 20mg per day to lower LDL to prevent another infarction. I have never had real high cholesterol, 218 at tops and now am around 158 total, triglycerides are also excellent. I have found that when using substitutes for this drug, I experience adverse effects, so I only take the name brand now. Good drug if you are started with a low dose right off the bat. Many Docs want to start you at 20mg or above, too much for the body to take, I think. M 55 13 years
