The bone scan two years later still found osteopenia so my gynecologist had me continue on the Actonel, although she put me on the monthly pill which was a lot more convenient. Then in January 2010, the mail order pharmacy which I am required to use for maintenance medications announced that the only "approved" osteoporosis medication was the generic Fosamax (i.e., if I elected to continue the Actonel, a 3 month supply would cost 6 times what I would be charged for the generic Fosamax!). The gynecologist felt the generic Fosamax was equally as effective as the Actonel so I was switched over but again on a weekly dosage. However, having gotten accustomed to taking it only once a month, I keep forgetting to take it every week. But now hearing that the Fosamax, while hardening your bones also makes them brittle, that may be a good thing.
