FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteoporosis Shoot me now. I took my first generic tablet on Wednesday. By that night, I was feeling a little achy. That grew into full flu-like symptoms: achy muscles, sneezing, coughing, very sore muscles and now very uncomfortable stomach pain. Today is Saturday and I just want to lay down and die. I hope this exits my system soon. It's poison, sure and true. I was taking the generic after my insurance company told me that Actonel costs $152/ three months v. $3.36 for Fosamax generic. I'd rather break a hip. F 54 1 days

1  To protect me from Osteoporsis Muscle and joint pain, re-flux, persistent coough, extreme fatigue and of late, difficulty in walking without a stick. I think this Poison which is what I consider it to be, should be banned.Never in all the time of taking this wretched medication have I been monitered. I have complained endlessly to the doctor as to the way I feel, but despite that, Fosamax was never in question. It was only when I learned how to use a computer did I manage to do any research on the drug. I have now flatly refused to take Statins or Fosamax.I have agreed to Calci-Chew with added vitamin D which I take twice a day.I am Osteopenic not Osteoporotic. F 75 8 years

1  Osteopenia Blurry vision about one year later. I stopped taking Fosomax about two months ago, and my vision is back to normal. I thought the blurriness was caused by my mascara, or eye cream that I ocassionlly put on my upper lids, or getting older (I'm 57), until my sister told me that one of the side effects of Fosomax is blurry vision. I will NEVER NEVER NEVER take Fosomax or its generic or any other drugs again, since I can honestly say that I am a healthy person aside from the osteopenia. My doctor told me that it and osteoporosis cannot be reversed, but I will prove him wrong. Although juicing takes effort especially with greens, it will be my armor from now on. F 57 1.5 years

1  Border line Osteoporosis Doctor prescribed Fosamax 10 months ago. Read side effects on the Iternet and was not comfortable going on it but decided to give it a try. After 8 months starting having a burning feeling in stomach, also had intermittent ache to left of sternum and under rib cage. Also, felt muscle aches off an on and I would find myself saying to my husband I just don't feel right. Had a pain in my hand for two weeks. Could not do my push ups because I couldn't put pressure on my hand. Six months ago I had a weekend of extreme abdominal pain. Thought I had appendicitis or it was my gall bladder. Almost went to ER but waited it out and it went away. Now I look back and it must have been the Fosamax. Also, my appetite was not normal. Lost weight while on the Fosamax. No matter what I ate or drank, I would not gain weight. This seems odd to me for someone who is 58 years old and at this age it is usually easy to gain weight. My appetite was so so in the morning, fair at lunch and then it picked up at s I called my doctor and stopped taking it this week to see if my symptoms disappear. Already, the burning has stopped. She said to stop it for 3 weeks, but I am not going back on it. Have done a lot of reading about the alkaline/acid balance and want to treat this diagnosis naturally. I do exercise and will alter my diet. F 58 10 months

1  Osteopenia Severe pain and delayed healing in jaw (extraction area) due to a dental extraction. Long term antibiotics were used and ultimately surgery was necessary on bone and gum to remove tissue. My jaw took nearly two years to heal and I still have discomfort occasionally. I had been off of Fosamax for about six months when it became necessary to have a tooth extracted but after being on Fosamax for over 7 years, it was clearly in my system. It has now been nearly four years since I stopped taking it. My dentist told me that Fosamax remains in the body for approximately 10 years. Horrible!! I would never take this type of medication ever again! When anyone asks me about this medication my answer is to never start taking it! F 67 8 years

1  osteoperosis took pill Saturday morning and by Saturday evening woke with extreme hip pain and pain across the chest which felt like severe muscle strain. Pain gradually subsided over the week. Didn't associate it with Fosamax until taking it again this Saturday and now pain in hips and chest is so severe I cannot walk, sit or sleep. Am lying flat on my back. F 51 2 weeks

3  Osteopenia After 5 years and lots of exercise and calcium, my bone has density improved from osteopenia to low normal. But I then developed extreme aching in hips and legs after I went to bed. So bad I would wake up and not go back to sleep. Some stretching and repositioning helped a little. So after six months of misery and some further reading about Fosamax, I stopped taking it. After two months my pain had reduced about 50%. Then went to orthopedist who treated me for bursitis in one hip with s shot, prescription NSAID and physical therapy. Indicated I had mild arthritis in both hips but none of this would cause the overall leg/muscle/joint ache I was experiencing. I have now been off Fosamax for 4 months and have no further joint or muscle ache at night. While Fosamax did its job combined with my diligence on the exercise and calcium, the potential side effects are real. My doctor and I had already discussed taking me off Fosamax and trying a yearly intravenous treatment. I just took myself off a little early. We'll discuss what to do next during my next annual check-up. My mistake was not taking calcium and exercising during menopause. Encourage all women how critical those calcium supplements are to their bone health. F 59 5 years

1  osteoporosis I took 4 doses of Alendronate in a one month period. My last dose was 12/16/2009 and I still have severe bone and muscle pain. This drug is POISON. I have such pain that I can only get around by using a walker or cane. The people who make this CRAP should be forced to take some of their own medicine and suffer like the victims they pushed it on. They wouldn't be able to open their wallets to put all the money their making by pushing this POISON on the unsuspecting public and the doctors who only listen to the drug companies instead of their patients!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The FDA is not out to protect the public, they only protect the Drug Companies. I have reported my severe side effects to both the FDA and the criminals who manufactured this drug and all I received was an e-mail letting me know they received my complaint. Nothing will be done about this drug until the lawyers get involved which shouldn't be too far off as they're always looking for ways F 60

2  osteopenia Haven't experienced side-effects as described by other consumers - however, am wondering about the efficacy of this medication (as well as Actonel which I am also reviewing). When my bone scan revealed osteopenia five years ago, my gynecologist placed me on weekly Actonel. The bone scan two years later still found osteopenia so my gynecologist had me continue on the Actonel, although she put me on the monthly pill which was a lot more convenient. Then in January 2010, the mail order pharmacy which I am required to use for maintenance medications announced that the only "approved" osteoporosis medication was the generic Fosamax (i.e., if I elected to continue the Actonel, a 3 month supply would cost 6 times what I would be charged for the generic Fosamax!). The gynecologist felt the generic Fosamax was equally as effective as the Actonel so I was switched over but again on a weekly dosage. However, having gotten accustomed to taking it only once a month, I keep forgetting to take it every week. But now hearing that the Fosamax, while hardening your bones also makes them brittle, that may be a good thing. So I will see if my next bone scan shows any improvement. F 61 7 months

1  Osteoporosis Felt like I had the flu only 1000x worse ! Nausea, vomiting, diarrea, and pains in my upper legs so bad I cried. I will never, ever ever, take ANY Dr. recommended drug again. I will continue with taking Vitamins, D, K and magnesium as well as Omega 3 fish oil. This drug is horrendous and I do NOT recommend it to anyone. I think ALL Doctors get a certain kickback from doling out these drugs, and do not care about the patient. No wonder they are so against any kind of health care reform ! They'll lose their their ability to just dash out scripts and may actually have to care and treat people ! 55 1 days

3  my doctor advised me to take it in I believed that this medication helped me because the bone density tests did not show an increase in Osteoporosis. But since last winter I have daily toothaches after having been outside for a walk or after crossing children at chool! I probably have a gum problem, resession? I have a lot of trouble getting off the floor and off the couch; my knees are stiff and they hurt often. Sometimes my wrists also hurt and my fingers. I assumed I had arthritis - but now I am not sure! I have stopped taking the drug this week! I will contact my doctor to find out whether there is something save on the market or maybe I will just go with calcium, milk, cheese, vegetables, and fruit. Natural remedies are always the better way! I used to pay $18 per tablet - and now that I see all these negative reports, I am very angry. I hope I did not do a lot of damage to my body. Do you know how long it takes to detox from it? I will not take Fosamax anymore. One of my friends just e-mailed me from Iowa and tol I will no longer take it! I hope this gets out-of my system fast. thanks for letting me coment on Fosamax. F 71 6 years

2  Osteoporosis I did stop taking Foxamax and my fatigue has abated considerably. I'm back to feeling the same as I did before I started. It didn't take too long - maybe a week or so, to feel back to normal. I don't think I'll be taking Foxamax, that's for sure! F 51 0 days

1  osteoporosis Choking - 3 times in 58 days starting 5/12/10 - could not swallow and EMTs couldn't clear food from my esophagus and I ended up in the ER where I had endoscopys. Had several tests over next month and the GI doctors said that my esophagus had narrowed (a known side effect of Fosamax). I was taken off Fosamax(alendronate) by the GI md after the second episode and still had a third severe episode of choking where even water couldn't get through the blockage. I am now on Prilosec daily to prevent the choking, but am weaning myself off that, since it causes osteporosis! Meanwhile, I am eating soft foods in tiny pieces and chewing like a child. I was told there is an injectable form of Fosamax, but I have trouble swallowing calcium tablets and vitamins. I am ready to join a class action suit to prevent this happening to any more people. I cannot believe all the side effects I have read about on this site. The public needs to be warned and doctors stop prescribing these dangerous drug F 64 270 days
