I don't drink and every year my liver is fine. 15mg a night always works & 1 last thing, brand IS stronger otherwise Teva & Greenstone are good generics. The last three years I've observed her quite closely. It's gradually robbed her of her essence. Yes, she still has soul but you gotta dig deep to find it. Before the drug she was conflicted and depressed at times but her feelings ( though very difficult at times ) and prayer always managed to pull her through. | Yes it saved her life several different times. When psychically speaking she couldn't hold it together. But to be destined to be on it for the rest of her life seems extreme. If she were given a plecebo I don't think she'd notice the difference. It was rough in the beginning, I could sleep for days. It's been 11 yrs now and the only side effects I had were, extreme drowsiness during the day, even after 10 hours of sleep. My appetite was out of control. I swear I woke up in the middle of the night to eat. My memory is terrible. I recently started to gradually wean myself off over the past few weeks. I went 4 days without taking it and had severe withdrawal symptoms. My anxiety shot through the roof, shakes, body aches, the whole nine. I seriously felt like a crackhead. After experiencing that, I dont know if I will ever be able to get off this medication. Tried about 10-15 different meds (mostly SSRI's, Seroquel, Lithium) before Remeron. Many made symptoms worse & some made me manic, which I never was before. This is the ONLY med that worked for anxiety, depression & insomnia. Benefits clearly outweigh side-effects, most of which have subsided or are at least bearable. Tried increasing to 45 recently due to return of some anxiety, but became agitated. Needed to gain about 10 lbs. but gained 30+. CONSTANTLY craved sugar/carbs. Once I ate carbs, I kept craving more & more. Low-carb lifestyle (Atkins) & exercise worked wonders! Lost ALL unwanted weight. Completely controls carb-cravings & all the "good" fat I eat (fish, flax-seed, olive oil, etc.) helps with mood & focus. I don't eat greasy or high saturated fat foods, I eat healthy carbs & fats. My BP & cholesterol are perfect now. I have more energy & think clearly. On the rare occasion I crave sugar, I chew sugar-free gum or eat fruit. I now weigh 125 lbs. @ 5'6 & feel great. Not a single panic attack in 10 yrs.! Occasionally get mildly anxious or depressed but can get out of it quickly. No self-injurious behaviors or suicidal thoughts in 10 yrs. either. Most people get sleepier on lower doses like 7.5mg 15Mg or 30 Mg but 45 Mg is the best for sleeping for me. It sometimes makes me so hungry that I have trouble falling asleep unless I munch a lot before bed. Another side effect is sleeping too much and daytime drowsiness. This side effect lessens after some time on the medicine. You can also cut the tablet in half or take a lower dose, eg. 7.5mg if it is to strong. | Even though I was prescribed this as needed for sleep it also improves my mood, since it is an antidepressant. I also take Celexa for anxiety & depression. If your only taking Rem for sleep it works best if you only take it when you need it as you may built up a tolerance to its sedative properties. Another important thing I would like to comment about is that this drug often causes weight wain for some people, however I am lucky as no meds seem to have this effect on me. If weight gain becomes a problem you can talk to your Dr. about trying Trazodone which is a similar med but doesn’t cause food cravings. Even though it still helps me sleep I have developed some tolerance to its sleep effectiveness over the years probably bc I take it almost every night. I have always taken a generic. I have about a 2 hour window around my normal bedtime when it is effective and if I take it early then I wake in 6 hours and if I am late then I get very poor quality of sleep and don't think very clearly in the morning.
